IGN predictions for Soundtracks

As many of us are all aware, one of the most endearing factors of the Grand Theft Auto series' great success is in it's soundtracks. Every radio station from Grand Theft Auto 3 to Episodes of Liberty City has a powerful effect of immersing the player within the game's universe, taking them to a specific time and place and introducing them to little known bands and songs as well as re-acquainting them with classic rock and pop. Radio adverts and DJ banter all add to the allure of the game's distinct personality and sound, and players often feel nostalgic about their experiences in the game due to the power of the music.

Grand Theft Auto 5 will surely follow in the tradition of previous GTAs, and one can only guess at the music and all the different kind of radio stations that will appear in the game. Here, I'm going to make a few guesses at what kind of radio stations will likely appear or reappear as well as what kind of music will likely soundtrack the chaos and madness of the gameplay.

Radio Los Santos will be back

Radio Los Santos first appeared in GTA San Andreas, and you can bet it will be back for GTA 5, since it too is set in Los Angeles' alternate reality, Los Santos. The station played early 90's west coast hip-hop, and I imagine it will be similar for the modern Radio Los Santos. With GTA 5 set in current times (2012-2013), I imagine a lot of modern west coast hip-hop will fill the airwaves, as well as being dotted with classics like you would hear in San Andreas. The special guest DJ could be a classic hip-hop star from the 90's era, perhaps Ice Cube or Dr Dre? Maybe even Snoop Dogg, sorry, Snoop LION.

Predicted Playlist artists: Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator,

An EDM Radio Station

Electronic music is big in America now, thanks to artists like Skrillex and Deadmau5. So, without a doubt, there's likely to be a station dedicated to dubstep, trap music and big club dance music. There'll likely be a sprinkling of mainstream hits, like Bangarang by Skrillex and Bass Cannon by Flux Pavillion, but also a few lesser known tracks due to Rockstar's wide knowledge of music. Guest DJ's could be a current EDM star or DJ, or perhaps someone who has championed the scene on radio. Perhaps David Guetta?

Predicted Playlist Artists: Deadmau5, Skrillex, Flux Pavillion, Alex Clare, David Guetta, Benni Bennassi, Rustie, TNGHT

A Nu-Garage/Bass Music Radio Station

Rockstar likes to highlight lesser known genres in their games, and on GTA 4 they proved that not only did they show awareness of the classics, but also the bleeding edge of new music trends. And so, I'm making a bold prediction that there will be a radio station dedicated solely to UK and US bass music, nu garage, electro and less mainstream dubstep. This music is growing in popularity in opposition to dubstep's mainstream popularity and is favoured by many underground electronic artists who produce in line with trends. Slower and more sexier than dubstep, it's making an impression over both sides of the pond. No idea who a guest DJ will be, but perhaps someone who is a part of this scene? Kode9?

Predicted Playlist Artists: Zomby, Burial, Mount Kimbie, FaltyDL, James Blake

A Techno/House music station

House music and techno have seen a resurgence in recent years, and I don't think Rockstar will have overlooked this trend. This station will likely feature a playlist of artists making modern techno and deep/French inspired house music as well as playing classics from the genres too. A special guest DJ might be a classic House or Techno DJ who was part of the scene. This one is a wild guess, but it's not impossible it could happen, Rockstar like to think ahead of the curve.

Predicted Playlist Artists: Surgeon, Gui Boratto, Ricardo Villalobos, Basic Channel, Andy Stott, Sigha

A Ska/Punk Radio Station

To fit in with the Californian vibes of stoners, skaters and surfers, I think there might be a station dedicated to punk and ska music. This music is favoured of the slackers, and the ska especially sounds sunny, and there could be a good mix of modern and classic tracks. A good guest DJ would be an artist who was formerly of the scene or perhaps Radio 1's famed Punk DJ, Mike Davies.

Predicted Artists: Sublime, Weezer, Rancid

A Reggae/Dub station

A reggae station has featured in nearly every single GTA game, and I don't see that changing now. This station will probably play more than the expected reggae though, but also dub music, dancehall and Carribean dubstep. No clue who the DJ might be, but I am certain this station will exist.

Predicted Playlist Artists: The Bug, Snoop Lion, Major Lazer, Toots & The Maytals, King Tubby, Kode9

An Ambient/IDM station

Grand Theft Auto 4 featured two stations dedicated to ambient and intelligent electronic music, and there's no reason why they might not do the same for GTA 5. These stations provided a nice reflective relief between more stressful missions, and even soundtracked browsing the internet. I expect (and hope for) more of the same. The DJ is not so important here because they used a humorous robot female voice on GTA 4.

Predicted Playlist Artists: Ulrich Schnauss, Aphex Twin, Tycho, Jon Hopkins, Boards of Canada, The Orb

GTA's first metal station?

GTA has yet to feature an all metal radio station, although the Lost and Damned GTA 4 expansion came the closest. Could it perhaps be time there was one? Metal music is amongst the most popular in the world, so its surprising there hasn't been a radio station dedicated to it. It could feature both old and new music, covering many sub-genre bases, such as thrash, prog and melodic metal. Potential DJs are endless to choose from, but someone like Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden could be a good choice.

Predicted Artists: Metallica, Machine Head, Mastodon, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Tool

Drum and Bass Station?

Drum and Bass music, although ever popular in the UK, will likely break out in the US too due to EDM becoming mainstream. Therefore, I think Rockstar might consider adding a station dedicated to it, because it hasn't done so since PSP spin-off Liberty City Stories. The station could feature old and new tracks, and it wouldn't sound out of place. The soundtrack will likely be the largest of all the GTA games, so there's bound to be space for it. Goldie would be a perfect DJ for this station.

Predicted Playlist Artists: Chase and Status, Pendulum, Roni Size, Goldie, High Contrast

Indie/Folk Station

There's bound to be a station for the hipsters, and folky indie music might fill that void. Expect to hear music from all kinds of artists, including Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes, Deerhunter and Vampire Weekend. This station is in no doubt, I think. Expect a DJ who you've probably never heard of.

Predicted Playlist Artists: Bands you've never heard of and Mumford & Sons.

A 'Drive' inspired radio station

This is my boldest guess, but I think there will be a radio station that features music like that on the soundtrack of 2011 Ryan Gosling movie 'Drive'. Since a large part of the game is about driving around, a soundtrack that fits that would be most appropriate. Expect a lot of 80's electro and SNES/Genesis era action game soundtracks.

Predicted Playlist Artists: Kavinsky, Daft Punk, Chromeo

Other stations:

Classic Rock, Pop Music, R&B, Disco, Country Music, Classic Hip-Hop, Classic Pop, Jazz Station, Alternative Rock Station

So there my predictions, what do you think? At best, most of my predictions are educated guesses, although a few of them I am almost dead certain will happen.

What radio stations and music would you like to see in Grand Theft Auto 5?

Sorry, but how does this "look like confirmation" of anything? The author outright says it's all guessing. That, and they basically listed every type of radio station that exists on mainstream radio.

A good D&B station, indie station (none of that mumford and sons bullsh*t though) rap station (along the lines of game fm and radio los santos, not the beat 102.7) and I'll be fine.

They need to get the d&b station spot on though. classics like renegade snares combined with some pendulum and such would be brilliant.

Metal, ska/punk, drum n' bass and alternative rock for me. None of that Skrillex or David Guetta crap though.

Ah man, I would love a drum and bass station, MSX FM would be awesome.

Moving Shadow has been defunct for almost ten years now... You should know that, you even have their logo as your avatar.

Snoop Lion? I hope that guess is off. As for the hip hop I Kendrick Lamar and Tyler, The Creator are good guesses. I hope there are two stations separating old school and new school hip hop as there were for GTA IV and SA. I only have one song that I hope is in the game which is The Recipe by Kendrick Lamar. I'm sure R* will do a fantastic job on the soundtrack especially since they even incorporated their own score into the game, hopefully they will pay as much attention to detail to the score as they did to the soundtrack.

I'm sorry but sublime isn't ska and weezer isn't punk.

and the slackers are from New York City, not Cali

He can tell you're from the UK/Europe due to the number of electronic/dance music stations.

I doubt there would be that many electronic stations unfortunately.

A dnb/dubstep mix would be more likely - probably a lot of "brostep" (Americanized Skrillex dubstep).

A classic rock station would be excellent. I just hope Rockstar goes all out to get memorable hits, rather than the forgettable stuff from IV.

If this is anything like the real soundtrack, I would fall in love with everything in GTA V. I love everything listed here but my true love lies in Indie/Alternative rock. I got my fingers crossed for Modest Mouse.

Forgettable stuff in IV? What was forgettable?
