Will there be 2D bushes or trees again?

At least they have tricks to make it seem less noticeable while playing.

Yes. RAGE isn't ready for full blown, perfect HD environments.

Whoa that's too much, for a leaf having 3D rendering is such a whack. People, vehicles, places are already enough, well if you can count dried leaves falling from trees and being raked by a gardener.

Yes, if you look @ the Scuba Diving screenshot and look at the yellow corals, they're 2D.

Trees will be 3d for sure, but leaves not.

There is no point to make a 3d model of leaf because it's so thin.

What they could do is some variety how the branches and leaves hang. They look bad if they all hang in 90 degrees and are all copies.

Fine they won't look without wind physics.

I think there will be, yes. sad.gif

In trailer 22 we could already see plants in 2D infront of Michael's mansion.

What is life in the future? and when did they release the next 17 trailers? could you give us the dates "man from future".

F.T.L.O.G.

Those are series of 2D planes which have leaves textures on them to create illusion of a tree. It's a known technique in a gaming world, because it creates nice illusion and doesn't use too much memory like modeling every leaf would. So no, don't expect anything better for this generation.

LOOK at red dead redemption one of Rockstar games released in 2010 - the country side and environment is so beautiful it has to be one of the best looking open world games i have ever played ( i haven't played many ). The tress and bushes looked amazing and i personally had no problem with them and in fact if gta v had the same i would not be complaining!!

So if this game was released in 2010 and it is now 2013 surely the tress and bushes have only improved why would they go back to gta 4 standard they was terrible. In fact many of the latest previews have have stated how amazing the landscape of gta v is ( cvg ), in fact one article said it looked a good improvement compared to red dead redemption!

below i have posted a screenshot of red dead redemption and a shot of gta v, i don't think it takes a genius too see how good they look.

Some of you don't know what I mean. I don't care about 2D leaves. I mean those 2D paper bushes or trees in GTA 4. Ones that don't even have a shape, and are just a straight row of leaves.

Here's the best picture and video I could find:

Well, going by the screenshots, I'd say that it looks like the trees and bushes are 3d objects made up with 2d assets, like in RDR.

Well, even in the next gen of consoles, trees and bushes will be rendered with the same technique. It's just insane to render individually every leaf in any commercial game. Maybe 20 years from now that will happen, who knows.

What the OP might be complaining about is:

a) texture resolution. A bigger res will look a lot better and make all the difference.

b) amount of polygons used for each tree or bush. More will help counter balance the "paper thin" look.

Some games do have very nice looking trees. It's because ancient console hardware can't support such amounts of 3D, so they use the 2D method. It doesn't really affect gameplay. If they wanted high quality vegetation, they could have hi-resolution textures, with large amounts of bump mapping, but even consoles can't run that. To answer your question, yes, the game sure does use 2D trees. Which makes me wonder, when going over them, will they do the classic 'spin around'?

Why do you have to assume? I try to explain and people just don't even read.

I'm not making a big deal out of this. I'm just making a point. Other games, like AC3, or Battlefield 3, have bushes that aren't like the ones in the video.

Are you going to sit there and stare at the f*cking foliage in this game?

Screw you. I've seen people complain about the lights on cars and the fact that there is dust when you drive on sand. Bushes looked like 4 sheets of green paper joined together in GTA 4, and they don't even move one bit.

There's nothing more pathetic than people who complain how the trees and bushes look. I understand map complaints and such but not this . Seriously, you're playing an open world game and something so trivial bothers you, what the hell ?

If you have seen RDR's trees and how sunlight shines through the leaves you would understand.

Vegetation/trees have some some destructible element. Trees on fire

And you give a sh*t why? Are you a professional gardener? Are you seriously telling me you are gonna scrutinize EVERY bit of texture in the game??

Seriously, GTA fans are the biggest babies in the world, and expect Rockstar to cater to your every need. Why put so much effort into a f*ckING bush?

That's in every game. There's always something that's just flat as hell and looks stupid.

What exactly is that you're expecting? Every leaf being having it's own 3D model rendered in real time?

Of course bushes will be 2D just like every other game ever released.

umm what? crysis 1 had awesome trees 6 years ago

It's really not that hard to make bushes as good as something like Assassin's Creed 3, Crysis, Battlefield.

I can make those 2D bushes in GTA 4 by following a tutorial. They should at least put some effort into it. Why do they put effort into those window blinds? Why do they put effort into the interiors of buildings that we're probably not gonna go into much? Because it doesn't require so much effort.

Anyway it doesn't matter. People answered my question.

The trees in Far Cry 3 were great in my opinion, I hope it's something like that. Or at least RDR standards.

"One day, Foreman read on some online gamer discussion board how they said the trees in GTA III looked terrible. He saw Sam's face redden in anger and went over to console him. “Look at these people,” Foreman said, “if they're sitting around looking at the trees, think about how much they're actually missing. It's just not relevant. It's easy to take something in isolation and get beaten up about it. But the reality is that GTA is not about the trees. It's everything in there. Not one thing in there is that great. You have to take it as a whole"

Yes, I get it. But the vegetation looks a lot better when Michael's in the red car driving around.

As a professional gardener, let me just say that I do not give a sh*t what the God-damn trees look like in game.

It's as though everyone needs to be vindictive within this forum as if their life depended on it. Calm down.

I sure hope they put SOME effort into the trees just so they aren't those terrible 2D textures crossed over, although it's not going to bother me if they don't do much about it as there are many other things in the game which are more important. As someone pointed out earlier, the RDR trees look pretty good. They actually have branches which is absolutely fine. No-one's claiming they want fully 3D modeled leaves.
