Police AI

One thing that was poorly implemented was police force. They weren't difficult to play against. I remember getting into a shootout and the police weren't intelligent in how hey handled a shootout. There were a lot of issues with the police force and their lack of decent behaviour:

-Police would contionously climb ladders to get you even though they see their buddies getting shot off.

-They would keep shooting you after you've died. You just shot me why are you still saying get down on the ground?

-Police would run straight into where you are shooting randomly.

Good stuff

I want to see some tactics. Police surrounding a building literally. Getting out and priming themselves behind their cardoor gun cocked.

Real police in the USA try to apprehend with as little bloodshed as possible. This is more realistic.

Better phrases and communication. Not saying the same thing over and over. You should be a ble to shout phrases back even, like flipping people off. A list of phrases to say.

They should shoot your tyres from their car.

It seems in V they are better though a lot of screens show them looking far more advanced. So I have high hopes. I hope Rockstar have addressed this stuff.

Getting out and priming themselves behind their cardoor gun cocked.

They often do this in IV, you know.

If you don't have a weapon out, they will apprehend you calmly. If you shoot at them, or kill another cop, they will kill you, naturally. I don't see how that is unrealistic?

They should shoot your tyres from their car.

I'm pretty sure they do this in IV, too. My tires often get shot out during chases, I find.

That's true about police tactics. But this is GTAs police are more forward and shoot to kill. Mostly because they are dirty and or don't really care about killing someone because they know they get away with it. IE San Andreas. IE gta 4 packies cop brother.

All though I do recall them explaining that police will use tactics and equipment depending on what you do in game said by a rockstar rep. That also depends if you pull out a weapon. Which explains the weapon wheel.

The likely scenario: Rockstar doesn't spend much time coding police AI

I remember many a time where I have this little I do where I find a certain train track, run about two minutes down the rails and find a building that's in jumpings distance. Once on it I find the first cop car and initiate. All these times the Police have NEVER tried following me, no there isn't a ladder but they could get there if they wanted, they ALWAYS take cover behind there vehicles or doors and fire at me, you get the odd cop that jumps out, but they tend to have sawn off shotguns, which is more practical considering.

I also notice that they jump cover between cars, eg a cop will spend 5 minutes behind the car he gets out of, then swap to another vehicle.

Where when they ask you to drop your weapon and stand still or they'll shoot, you comply but they still shoot you.

Police are cruel, savage creatures. This seems realistic to me. dozingoff.gif

Hound dogs would be so cool,

Road Blocks? Not so much. I'd rather have them chase me in a car and shoot my tires out.

And maybe different dogs for different environments of course.

Police using car doors as cover is unrealistic. A bullet will travel through that quicker than your head. The best place to take cover is behind the rubber tyres as they will slow the bullet down.

Police officers have protocols to follow, shooting tires out from the side window is not one of them.

Idk, they were pretty good for the time. They even flank behind you when you are killing a lot of them and for the most part get the drop on you.

Police vehicles are equipped with ballistic panels within the door frames for doing exactly that. It is entirely realistic.

What you described are issues that plague almost every single AI system out there.

-If there's only one entrance (in this case ladder) and they can't reach you or shot you from another place, they will all use said entrance.

-That happens in Halo as well, because it's designed to be that way. It's the AI version of teabagging.

-Last I checked the AI couldn't really avoid hitscan bullets and predict where you were going to fire and when you would stop.

But yeah, I agree that they should be a little more intelligent.

na, the chasing police cars don't shoot. its the police on foot who shoot while you drive past. just seems like the cop cars are doing it. ages ago i tried to see if cop cars shot my tyres out, but saw in the distance the police on petrol shooting.

very unrealistic mind you, driving at 100 mph and a cop on the street manages to shoots tyres, from a distance as well.

One thing I liked in GTA IV which made it better than the old games was police actually arresting other peds. Though hopefully it's a bit more realistic this time than holding them at gun point and escorting them back to the cop car.

Some instances should be they hand cuff them and others should be they flog them with their night stick if they get aggressive.

The chasing AI was put in by chance, I remember Houser saying that they were playing with the Police AI and all of a sudden the police went mental and were running peds over and getting into pile ups and they liked that, and its been like that since GTA III.

But, they practically do everything you have put, so the police AI to me is perfectly fine

What I missed in IV was the random car chases like you had in San Andreas. Peds shooting while in the car. Small detail but it contributed to the liveliness of the city and the game.

I thought cops in single player were perfect for the most part but they were extremely flawed in multiplayer because whenever you enter a building the police never go inside the building, which is realistic but it's not fun. R* fixed the problem to an extent in TBoGT but when you're inside a building Cops should storm the building from every entrance to create a fun shoot out. Me and my friends really enjoy hiding in two story buildings and kill off waves of cops.

Also in IV cops were toned down during Free Roam in multiplayer, for instance when you have 3 stars and you try to swim to escape the police would never hop in a boat to pursue you. Personally I think MP cops should be more persistent and deadly because there are obviously more people in the world than in single player. When I'm with my friends I want the most dynamic police chases possible whether I'm on foot, in a plane, boat, or car.

I think the on foot AI was actually quite impressive esp for an open world game. if you hung around an alley way with different entrences you would get flanked quickly. plus they did use some tactics, they would stay in cover if under heavy fire, and they would dash across open ground during fire fights.

Another impressive thing was how if you were inside a building, they would stop their car outside and follow you in, unlike past games where they would just ram the building until they blow up.

The other day I was in PB X's loft shooting at the police, they couldn't get to me due the elevator, but they did manage to go on to the roof of the building next to me and ambush me. that was impressive!

Just thought I'd throw in some app for the AI as I feel it does get unfairly critsed about problems all video game AI suffers from. the AI is the best of seen in an open world video game imo. icon13.gif

Now the in car pursuit AI is another story that defo needs drastic improvments

I think the police system in IV has to be taken with a pinch of salt. There are improvements that can be made, but at the same time making it to difficult to have a fun shootout with the police would be a very bad idea.

For example if you was on a 4 star wanted level, just drooling at the carnage your about to create, and all of a sudden a police sniper on the building opposite that you didn't see one shots you in the head and kills you, ruining the fun. And it might be more realistic like that but its still a game, a game about crime. And you won't want to feel too heavily punished for actually committing a crime, otherwise what is the point?

Why not make it a challenge. That way we would be more enjoying a chase if the cops were more persistent.
