(I say 'almost' - TTK is still ridiculously over-priced over here in the UK, certainly for people who just want to give these races a try. And it's a limited-time event, too - only until the 29th, apparently)

Save your money, especially if you're on PS4/Xbox One since there are/will be better games. Actually, save it even if you're on LG like I am, since they seem to have run into an animation limit and have been cutting a few things lately.

The only thing I do recommend is to go listen to the soundtrack, because a lot of that music is pretty fantastic.

Have an opinion from someone who owns it and plays it on a daily basis. I understand pricing issues in other countries, but I personally love the content I get. The Taken King basically opens a whole new game, featuring quite a few new missions tied to multiple quest lines. The gear is fantastically designed and well built with complexity, compared to the Year 1 counterparts that just give ammo for certain guns. New perks have been added to weapons to change how they play. The infusion system works wonderfully compared to the ascension system of the House of Wolves. There is new gear to strive for from multiple areas, including the revamped Iron Banner and the new strike-exclusive rewards. Many of the new weapons and armor have a unique look, feel, and function, that either capitalizes on new and different play styles (Sleeper Simulant, The Chaperone), or brings back nostalgia for us veterans (Black Spindle, No Time To Explain). It all feels so much more rewarding and is even more of a joy to play compared to last year. The expansion price tag is definitely worth it.

Granted, my patience with FPS games tends to burn out a lot faster than it does for other games (I got bored with the core gameplay loops of of vanilla Destiny very quickly, and while I loved the Bungie Halo games, and binge-played them to death back in the day, I don't see myself going back to that any time soon) - but beyond that, the $60 price tag for TTK is just too much, IMO, for what it's adding to the experience.

Man, I had to swear off collectors' editions years ago! Joys of running a small business - income stops being quite so 'disposable'...

 

But yeah, it's also because I'm in the position that Destiny needs to convince me to come back to it - TTK is probably a much more acceptable proposition (at any price) for players who were still enjoying it up to that point.

Can't remember where I read it, but someone made the astute point that if the price of The Dark Below was a deal-breaker for players, it probably wasn't the price itself, but that one had reached their limit with Destiny, enough that they were looking for a 'jumping-off point' to justify not sticking with it - i.e., if you weren't bored with the game by then, buying the expansions was pretty much a given.


(...still really like the look of those racing suits, though - maybe there'll be some kind of seasonal sale that'll allow me to download TTK for a reduced price, in time to give it a go...)

Don't get me wrong, the content and quality of the missions/strikes/raid of TTK is better than pretty much all of Destiny year 1. It just gets stale quickly, and the second half of it (after the main story missions) is pretty repetitive.

Other than that, PvP is still how it's always been (fun but broken), and all the old content is irrelevant, making the first year a complete waste of time outside of meeting new people and having fun with friends (which you can do on any other game, and other games have a lot more content to boot).

Speaking of which, if you don't have a bunch of good friends playing Destiny, don't bother.

All that negativity aside, I'm interested to see how sparrow racing turns out

I can't go anywhere to actively discuss Destiny anymore because everyone just hates it. I try to bring up something positive or new and everyone just replies back with their usual complaints. But whatever. Guess I should just let the thread die since there is no community here.

I am sooooo obsessed with SRL, was having a tough time getting first place the first couple of days but still managed to get top 3 in about 98% of them.

 

Today after a few matches I suddenly switch my game up and then started getting first place every single time leaving my opponents at least 8 seconds behind, only problems so far is that

 

 

- The physics for the Sparrows are random as hell, even the smallest things can sometimes cause you to flip and explode

- The damn fans in Mars... I swear it sometimes stops in place for a millisecond just so I can crash into it; lost a few races just from that

- The grinding is annoying, you won't get any 320's until you reach rank 3 which will take you about 100+ matches. I have no idea how many I completed in total since I haven't purchased that records book (which is a total ripoff I might add and that's coming from someone that has bought at least 2 emotes every new release) I'm also hearing rank 4 will require 8000 EXP... no thank you.

 

Sadly I'll be leaving out of state for a while this weekend and won't be back until early next year perhaps so I won't get to fully experience this 3 week event; they said they're interested in feedback from the community to see if they can continue with this event in the near future. I'd say this is the most fun I've had in the game since the first 2 weeks of TTK.

 

 

Also I'm thankful that Bungie made it possible to play with a fireteam of up to 6 people in this game mode. I don't remember the last time me and my party simply enjoyed competitive racing with each other without feeling salty, lots of laughs were had and I'm hoping I have more time to play with them later today.

it really is competitive, but not in a murderous way. My only issues are the physics, the lag from someone's garbage connection sometimes, and the fact that missing a gate slows you down. I am one of the top players in the world right now on Xbox (waiting for leaderboards to update-just landed a 4:07.928 on Venus). I am rank 3, and rank 4 is (yes, unfortunately) 8500 reputation, but that means I have work to do. With how common the legendary drops are, I have pulled a 319 cloak, and several 310+ helmets I have been using as infusion fuel. And since the update made it so the CE Exotic Class Itema can be infused, my Nightstalker's Cloak is 308. I completed the Record Book entirely, own every sparrow other than the EV43 Lightrunner (horn package random drop), and just neex the Racing chest piece to complete the legendary Racing armor set.

 

 

Pro tip: the racing armor doesn't have stats because any class can wear it. Only helmets and class items have stats because they are unique to the classes. If you have upgraded race gear move it over so you have your buffs when you begin.

if you wear the full armor set from the book with the class item from the races the armor has little lights that flutter on and offm it's really cool.

Did it twice last night. Not meaning to sound like a downer, but it was pretty boring. Same repetitive strategy.

 

Also, f*ck teleporting Ogre's. They'd always seem to teleport when we were on the last phase and f*ck up the whole run.

The lame Sparrow race need more tracks. Maybe some Earth tracks on the Euro Dead Zones or the highways heading to the Cosmodrome could be better and more appealing.

Those teleporting ogres are soooo stupid... so much can go wrong with this challenge. Not running from the bombs makes this fight really boring though.. but this is the only way other than 9-0 Trials to get guns above 310, which is complete bullsh*t if you ask me.

Right now, I have a choice: wait for every Iron Banner to get higher gear or woman up and start doing King's Fall every week. It's looking like Banner right now. I pretty much only enjoy doing strikes and Court of Oryx, but they don't award high-level gear. I could do Court of Oryx all day if only it didn't spam 263-299 blue engrams with an occasional 300 piece of gear. SRL looks and feels promising, we're naturally going to need more maps.

 

However, that Y2 Multi-Tool tho! I have nearly 40k kills with the Y1 Mida. It has been my main Crucible primary for the majority of my time on Destiny and is pretty much the only weapon I can consistently get Crucible kills with, but now the brats are trying to get it nerfed.

You should rank up the Sparrow Racing League to Rank 3 and start getting the 310-320 Helmets and Class Items. IMO it's more worth it than King's Fall and the legendaries drop much more often. On top of that there are 6 special shaders exclusive to the SRL, and the quest gives racing gear and a new sparrow. Unfortunately they made the armor transferable between subclasses, so none of the other gear has stats, but the Helmets and Class Items all can go up to 320. Haven't gotten a 320 yet myself, but I have a 318 helmet and a 319 Racer's Scarf, and I've infused much of the helmets and class items I use a lot up near 310 with the gear drops.

Got a 320 helmet the other night, sadly I'm not done grinding it since I need more infusion fuel for my other helmets; not to mention I want to infuse my CE Titan's mark and my SRL mark up to 320 (both are 315 and 316 respectively).

 

Thankfully there's still 9 days left for the event and then comes Iron Banner (which by the way will feature exclusive drops for PS4), and the shotgun they teased looks pretty great... rank 5 drop

It's sad that the shotgun isn't to get a lot of sunlight with everybody sniping on maps nowadays. Kind of annoying getting popped by the occasional snipers on maps like Thieves Den and Anomaly. They didn't need to nerf Chaperone or amplify the Fusion Rifle's recoil.. any of you guys notice that when using Plan C or even the Thesan FR4?? The recoil is stupid crazy, even with max stability.
