How Big Is The Map?

"Rockstar promised a big map!

The map covers a large area based loosely on SoCal. How large it is exactly remains to be seen, but Rockstar assures us that it's big. Responding to a question from US magazine Game Informer, Rockstar's VP of Creative, Dan Houser, once again stressed that the map will be big:

Los Santos appears to be around the same size as GTA IV's Liberty City. There is also a fully explorable Mount Chiliad, a military base, a Salton Sea region, Wine County and a fully explorable ocean floor along the Los Santos coastline. There are also underwater caves.

Rockstar has now confirmed that the map is also 3.5x the size of Red Dead Redemption in terms of playable area above ground. Five times if you count underwater area.

Just because there is one city doesn't mean the map will be small. Los Angeles is a massive city (it has a bigger land area than New York City) and Rockstar has stated that the map will include countryside, small towns and mountains ranges. There are lots of airports and airstrips in Southern California — not just LAX!"

Well basically here we already know theres a main airport in los santos. In the second trailer we see a mud airstrip and im sure the military base will have one so thats 3 without thinking about there being one anywhere else. Anyway who needs a runway, it'll be fun landing in the desert avoiding shrubs.

To the people who say the map is small think about the under water section of the map. In GTA IV on console you could glitch your way under the sea but theres just a flat sandy area until it ends. The underwater area needs to be kept in mind when people look at the map made from the SE and CE. smile.gif

I so curious now.

In the next trailer they should have shots with all 3 of them jumping out a plane, each with another view or something.

I've seen nobody claim the map itself is small. The city however is another matter and your post does nothing to put my mind at rest. Here is the deal. We can't know for sure how big the city is until we play the game. We can only have opinions. The city to me looks small however this could change once I play the game.

There's a bridge heading down next to the airport another island?

It's funny how Malibu is right there but no one notices. It's not a city but it's not LS either.

Have the underwater caves been confirmed? So far i only know about wreckages underwater and stuff. Underwater caves kinda make sense i guess, but is that true? Still hoping to see caves in the mountain areas too.

Malibu? Are you sure?

To me it looks more like a stretch of PCH with some parking lots and the beach. No residential areas visible.

Might just be an ocean docks area like from Los Santos in GTA:SA, which was also located adjacent to the airport.

Those roads leading south have me so damn intrigued.

Los Santos port, "Ocean Docks" if I remember the name correctly.. Move along..

Just take a look at the rolled map in R* "preorder and get stuff" ad. There's only two inches max of the map left at the point where the "race track" is.. So there will not be anything big "hidden" on the south.
