GTA IV. It alone has about 3 branching story lines to it as well as the main one. If you add the other two protagonists you get a wide spectrum story unseen in any other GTA.

For me it's Max Payne. I've allways liked the broken man angle (I guess IV had that as well.) and they hit the nail on the head with Max Payne 3, perfect mix of Redemption story, broken shadow of his former self man story, and great narative pacing.

IV is (so far) the best GTA story no holds barred but I think comapired to MP3, it isn't as good. RDR, I'd say falls in a tie with IV, loved for diffrent reasons. MP3 kind of brought them together.

Max Payne 3. That's obvious. The game is suppose to be based on an entertaining story.

IV's story breaks down in the last third after Niko stops being the focus and it turns to the Pegorino family, it felt hard to get involved. Say what you will about Max Payne3 but at least it was consistent and entertaining

Max Payne 3 put me to sleep. It was probably has the most predictable storylines I have ever played. Just watch any 'woman/girl gets kidnapped' movie and you already know what happens in the beginning, middle, and end.

I haven't finished Max Payne 3 yet, but the story is good.

I didn't care to much for the story in IV, so Max Payne it is.

If you actually played the game, you would know that it changes halfway through.

Max Payne 3 had a better story personally. Everything Max did, things got even worse. He thought travelling to Brazil would somehow amend his wounds of his past but they just kept digging deeper and Max was pulled into a dark, twisted conspiracy he never saw coming.

Although some of the twists are somewhat predictable I enjoyed the story much more than Grand Theft Auto IV. The final level was probably the best "final level" in any game I have ever played. Max venting out all of his anger on Becker and Victor in the final stretch of the hanger was awesome with MAX:FINALE playing in the background. It was amazing with Max shooting the UFE soldiers in the Metro section where you have to shoot them on the opposite tram in Bullet Time while every UFE soldier is out to kill Max.

Compared to MP3, IV's story was a piece of garbage. I liked it but Max Payne's was better.

I loved how Max was narrating the story like it was a book or something. The last Chapter was the best mission/chapter I have ever played.

These are some of the things that immediately stick out for me when i think of IV's story. I can't workout if it's a good thing or not...

GTA IV. We got to witness the falling out between Dimitri/Faustin, PBX/Dwayne, the rift between the McRearies and the Pegorinos fall apart.

It felt like a true journey as Niko saw things for how they really were. MP3's story was good though. I just think GTA IV's story is better.

Grand Theft Auto IV had a great story-line, it had a few believable characters and you follow Niko's journey to his goal, and even then he thinks if that's all he ever wanted all along. It was heart warming

Now I'm not saying Max Payne 3's story was bad because I enjoyed that one too, but it didn't feel unique or anything, felt like no matter what it would end up with "your princess is in another castle"

Agreed. The thing I found with MP3 is the transitioning between certain chapters felt a bit lost in translation. I sometimes wondered "wait why am I doing this"? GTA IV (like every open world game) offered more variation from a point of view perspective.

As I said Niko beared witness to a few key scenarios which did make it seem like he was on a journey on the way to "that special someone". It made LC really feel like a city where 1000s of stories are told everyday.
