Kyle17
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/24...wash-river?lite Damn, I've driven across this bridge almost every day. There gonna have to replace the whole bridge due to it's "obsolete design", this will take a year or two at least.

lil weasel
Brings back memories: Connecticut I-91 (1983) Connecticut I-91 (1983) Minneapolis I-35 (2007) Just driving along at 65 or 70 mph and then, NOTHING is under you? The Pizza Delivery Guy
Yeah, this really reminded me of Minneapolis. That one stuck with me, since I have family over there. Anyone actually fall in?
lil weasel
Anyone ever spent an Hour or two sitting in traffic on a bridge like the "George Washington"? You can really feel it sway in the wind. First it was Air Planes, Elevators, now Bridges, again.

Yeah, two cars with a total of three people. No casualties, but two of the three are in the hospital for injuries & hypothermia treatment.
Toke
We Washingtonians dont have the best of luck when it comes to bridges. I'm just glad there were no fatalities.
darthYENIK
I'm surprised bridges like this have lasted as long as they have. Especially on the west coast with all our earthquakes. Of course this isn't the most infamous bridge collapse in Washington history... Edited May 24, 2013 by darthYENIK
Wolf of Badenoch
The collapse was apparently caused by a semi-trailer truck hauling an oversize load hitting the trusswork on the southbound side of the highway. The vertical clearance from the roadway to the beam is 14.6 feet. A spokesman for the Washington State Department of Transportation said there are no warning signs leading up to the bridge regarding its clearance height. The truck fully crossed the bridge as it began collapsing, and the driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators. Thank god no-one was killed. JOSEPH X
Just had a look on google maps to see where this was. They've updated the map view to show the bridge is out, but the satellite view is still (understandably) showing the bridge is there. Getting directions will still take you over the downed bridge though. What is it with Americans and bridges?
gtamann123
I remember the 35W bridge collapse because I was supposed to go to a twins game the next day with a youth group but the game was cancelled the next day because of the collapse. And then me and my dad went down there to see the bridge a couple days later and we even saw president bush in his motorcad. luckily no one was killed in the Washington bridge collapse. na89340qv0n34b09q340
Of course this isn't the most infamous bridge collapse in Washington history... God. I was watching a documentary about bridges when I was ten, and they played a straight minute of footage of that bridge. I couldn't sleep that night. Bridges shouldn't move like that ever, and when they do it's incredibly nightmarish. The music in that specific video definitely doesn't help. tubbs51
The issue is that dozens and dozens of bridges are in disrepair. I want to think that bridge was rated a 57.7 out of 100 in terms of maintenance. That uber dangerous Chilean road is a 5 out of 100 for perspective.
lil weasel
The issue is that dozens and dozens of bridges are in disrepair. What do you expect. All the money is going to repair roads in the Middle East. And, then to buy bombs to blow them up, again.
