Calculating the size of Los Santos

So umm ...I don't know the exact numbers for everything, so I'm just gonna post the formula in my brain.

So, the map is gonna be 3.5 as big as RDR.

RDR was about 6sq miles (Heard it was 13, but that doesn't sound legit).

6*3.5 = 21sq miles.

Now we take the map size and divide it by the map size on blueprint (21.5" x 26.75")

Now we're gonna have to turn the miles into inches.

A mile = 63360 inches.

So 21 miles = 1330560"

1330560/575.125 = 2313

So, we take the Los Santos size on the blueprint and just multiply it by 2313 and we have the size of Los Santos in inches.

(Then we'd probably turn it into miles)

Not really an interesting topic, we're probably gonna get it wrong anyway.

And even if we get it right, it might feel/play a lot smaller/bigger than what it is.

It's just that all these map size threads have been ...Meh.

Measured the map as a whole and Los Santos.

Map (On my screen) = 5.7" x 4.4"

Los Santos (On my screen) = 2.3" x 1.8"

And:

Map (On blueprint) = 21.5" x 26.75"

I'm just gonna do a simple percentage equivalent.

(4.14 / 25.08)*100 = 16.50%

16.50% of 575.125 = 94.89

Los Santos (On blueprint) = 94.89 inches.

Alright, the moment of truth everybody.

The size of Los Santos is...

94.89*2313 = 219480.57

Convert that to miles and ...

The size of the city of Los Santos is ...

3.4 SQUARE MILES

Very close to the size of Liberty City!

Sorta underwhelming, but I'll have to see how it plays.

Crap, this is embarrassing, expected more people to have posted.

Now ...Does anyone know the size of Los Santos on the blueprint?

I guess calculating the size of the city of Los Santos on the blueprint will need some more scaling and math.

UPDATED!

Posted the size of the city of Los Santos in the OP.

Which is exactly like what the previews said ...

Crap.

7 square miles huh ...

Wow, so there's 35 square miles of just ...Deserts and mountains?

Eeesh ...I hope there's a lot of towns there.

7 miles is sorta underwhelming...

How big was Los Santos in San Andreas?

Thanks for the calculations, but not sure if that sounds right. I think on the mapping thread, LS has been deemed to be around 3 sq. miles if not a little less (at least for the revealed portion).

I do think after everything has been revealed that LS will be about the same as LC's landmass (3.5 sq. miles) though.

LC was 6.8 sq miles.

LS (If I'm correct) will be around 7 sq miles.

And the previews said LS will be slightly bigger than LC, so I think that sounds about right.

It might be, but people will come in here and try to tell you its even smaller by forcing their "opinion" on you....Be prepared

The entire GTA IV map including water is 6.something. The landmass, water excluded, is half of that area. LS isn't split into islands so if it's "only" 3.something that is equal populated area to LC.

Here's CAD program "calulation". If map is joined well and grid scale (dimension) is 1x1 km, then area bordered by purple line is about 6.55 square kilometers (2,53 sq miles).

2 things.

1. You're not taking into account the side streets and stuff to the right and left of it.

2. So ...RDR is only 6 sq miles?

NVM, did something wrong.

I actually see what was wrong with my calculations now.

The entire RDR map is 14 square miles but the area within the boundaries you can roam is 6 square miles, no flying or swimming, no controllable boats either.

I think a lot of people misunderstood the fact that Los Santos (the city itself) is not bigger than RDR, SA and GTA IV. The entire map is. With country and underwater added it is bigger than all three.

even if its 0.5 times bigger than whole gta sa map then should be satisfied , come on thats more than enough

RDR playable area is +- 5,1 sq miles (13,2 sq km). 1) yes, I am not sure which parts belongs to LS. 2) 5,1 sq miles smile.gif3) 6,55 km = 4,1 miles (in length) but not in square area... sqrt(6,55)=2,56 (this is length of square) => 2,56/1,609=1,59 (this is length of square in miles) => and finally 1,59*1,59=2,53 sq miles :)

Still very close to Liberty City.

The mountains to LS ratio is 5:1

Roughly the size of LC works for me. smile.gif

Big enough for the city.

OP What you think of the method I use

I think the scale of the blueprint map is 1 inch to 1/4 mile.

So each grid square is 0.5625 sq miles.

Looking at the blueprint map it seems the city covers around 9 of the grid squares, including the large oil field, docks, airport, suburbs.

Assuming 7 of the 9 squares are half full and 2 are full I end up with estimated city size of ~3 sq miles.

This method is very rough estimate so in reality there could be an extra .4 sq miles eg the top centre square could be classed as full rather than half full, this would add a further ~.2 sq miles

I also posted in mapping thread regarding the scale and total area of blueprint map, so can view for more detail on method

Thoughts?

@RockstarNiko, are you just using the revealed part of the city? If so ~5sq. miles of city landmass in that area alone would be far greater than I thought! I believe not all of LS has been shown and there may be another smaller city/town somewhere in the southeast. Since there is way too much open space there.

I had a feeling that the total map would be about ~22 sq. miles with ~18 sq. miles land, ~4 sq. miles water ~6sq. miles of city (~4 sq. miles LS + ~2sq. miles other cities/towns) and ~12 sq. miles countryside.

I was basing this off the fact that Rockstar may have misled us on "interiors and exteriors included" when calculating square mileage and they have a tendency to trick some of us it's way bigger than it really is.

It's good to hear that the map may actually be closer to 30 sq. miles than 20 though. Hope the real map delivers!

Just realize I forgot to half the 7 half filled ones so it is ~3 not ~5 sq miles tounge.gif

That's fine by me lol. That's what I thought it was initially. I think with southern LS eventually revealed, all of LS will be ~3.5-4 sq. miles.
