Why were GTA 4 controls quite bad?

There was something wrong with GTA IV controls?

This is news to me.

You can't sit there and say you were satisfied with how clunky they were?

I sat there for hours extremely satisfied wink.gif

You didn't slam Triangle, or Y to have Niko, or whoever walk around in circles? You didn't try running from the Police, to suddenly be stopped by a car who hits you because the character just nodded off and walked in a random direction? You didn't try to get into a fight and try to counter, just to have Niko or whoever get socked in the f*cking face? I mean, if you didn't I am jealous of the copy you got of GTA IV. Must've been the beta. [/QUO

Maybe it wasn't the game.race yourself

You're right, I probably wasn't the best on foot in GTA. But i'm not going to sit here and say that the developers didn't make a perfect game.

I didn't realise I said the game was perfect. Please provide such quote.

And just fr the record rdr came out after GTA of course it was improved.. you was expecting it to be worse.?

Here I'll make it so you'll understand. Remember when you first coloured in a picture you couldn't keep it in the lines? But then the more you did it the better you got!

Fine for me. I just hope the 'classic' control option returns in V.

Hate using R2/L2 to accelerate/brake.

Really, using X and circle to accelerate/brake wouldn´t fit, since the driving mechanichs for this gen are much more precise than in the previous gen.

When people say GTA IV had bad controls, bad driving, bad aiming, etc. I never know wtf they're talking about. I really think they're saying more about themselves than they are about the game.

I don't understand this "First HD open world game" excuse people use around here, they didn't do any steps back going from 2D to 3D, there's no reason why there would be for going from 3D to HD, and it certainly doesn't seem to happen to most other franchises when they change to a better engine.

I thought the controls were fine. How the character moved did feel clunky and slow though, but the controls were fine personally.

The driving is very fun in GTA IV, but the on foot controls are bad (especially the aiming). This is especially evident when "auto-aim disallowed" TDMs just involve people strafing left and right while not adjusting their aim (since it'll probably get thrown way off the target). While I love GTA IV, the game plays very poor as a third-person shooter.

Well if you want to see a debate then go into the "GTA V will be boredom proof" thread. I'm just choosing not to debate with you because:

A: You didn't really have an argument in the first place. You just said you liked them.

B: You didn't really have another point that you proved to me, you just tried to be a smart-ass

C: You didn't really have a conclusion to your argument, you just said I was a joke.

If you want a debate, i'll give you one.

Maybe practice makes perfect because they seemed fine to me. Don't try and press the button to enter a car from a mile away, run right up to the door before you press it. Good timing will help you out in fistfights.

Ehhh, yeah no. The controls weren't perfect. Like anybody else in this thread will say, play RDR and you'll notice differences. RDR has more flow to it, and it's less interrupted like GTA's were. GTA's were stingy, and it seemed to be horrifically slow. I wasn't trying to press a button a mile away, or run up to the door before I pressed it either. I was directly next to a vehicle, pressing Y, with Niko walking around in circles.

I hated RDR feel, the running was good but the jumping seemed floaty and turning around looked odd.

Too light you mean.

IV was (ill say it again) purposely made weighty for the feel.

Well it's good too know the newer Rockstar games have improved controls. It's just for every game one of the priorities should be to make smooth and responsive controls. And it is, for most games. But there's a difference between weight in the movement and responsiveness.

Pretty much, yeah. When Resident Evil 1 came out, I went out and bought it and for maybe the first 30 minutes to an hour I thought the controls were strange and unwieldy. Then I got used to them, and ever since then they've been second nature to me. Totally fine. Yet I would always hear people claim that RE's controls were completely broken and the game was literally unplayable. Clearly the problem wasn't the controls... it was these people who either refuse to or literally can't adapt to controls.

When I first started playing GTA IV, I suppose I vaguely remember that the controls took a little getting used to. Not much. I've thought they were perfectly fine since then. I have no reason not to put GTA IV control-whiners in the same "maybe the real problem is YOU" category. Lots of people just suck ass when it comes to video game controls.

ill have to agree with you there perfect ,& hope they don't change in V hope we still get the CLASSIC option in options as we did in IV ... they change that it will be hard for some players like me to be able to just jump in & start we will be having to change sh*t all day to find the classic settings ,tho im sure R* will keep it. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Clunky is the last word I'd use for the GTA IV congtrols.....I thought were just fine.

I recently played Max Payne 3, now that's what I would call clunky. Good game but very clunky.

Hate using R2/L2 to accelerate/brake.

I hate it the 'classic' control options. Accelerating with X gets annoying because you can't drive slow.

Anyways, how did the controls in IV suck? They were fine. In V they should just give us full adjustability so people won't bicker.

Hated the cover system. angry.gif When ever I wanted to take cover on one side of the wall for some reason my character would take cover on the other side. Dont know how many deaths I have suffered because of this in Multiplayer.

Those are the only linear buttons on console controllers though, everything else is either full brake/gas or none at all.

I personally find the controls very enjoyable and have never really had an issue other than how slow Niko gets in and out of a car and the occasional cover glitch. I actually find RDR and Max Payne 3 controls for basic walking to be more clunky and irritating. I can't nudge John a little like I can with Niko.

I found the controls on GTA IV quite floaty, especially on foot. As stated numerous times, Niko/Johnny/Luis sometimes either take FOREVER to turn, or run in the completely wrong direction. Driving controls were great in my opinion, however I didn't like how the camera was offset when driving a car. The one major problem I have is the cover system. It's buggy, and very stiff (you have to be VERY precise, or else you might duck right into enemy gunfire).

People who were cool with the GTA IV controls either have much better (or much worse?) dexterity than me or something. They were definitely, I guess "clunky," is the best way to put it. Certainly not fluid. Don't get me started on actual functions (cover, getting into cars, etc.), just movement was weird. I felt like the game responded like I was playing with a piece of sh*t aftermarket controller that wasn't working correctly.

I found RDR to be much better. I still had control issues, but more for stylistic than functional reasons.

GTA IV was their first HD open world game. If you played RDR you would see the many improvement they did with the Rage engine.

This. Don't know what else to say.

The not-so-responsive control in GTA IV was the result of a lot of attention to detail. Maybe too much?

The fact is, GTA IV's characters have some of the most realistic animation I've seen in a third-person game. Every change of movement, turning around, running, walking, feels connected and coherent.

If you watch previous GTA games you can tell the difference.

The problem is, every extra frame of animation means less responsive control.

Its faster if you character instantly turns around than if you see him actually turning around.

With a bit of tweaking from R* I'm sure they will find the perfect balance.

Weight and gait.

Also you can instantly 180 degree turn by clicking right joystick and aim.

On foot, GTA IV is a very clunky game. I think that's because R* was unable to perfect the use of Euphoria at that time. The thing that probably annoys me the most is when you pull back on the left analog stick while sprinting, and then your character will turn around and run like five feet backwards. That's got me killed many times.

Also, I hope the characters in GTA V move faster. Niko was pretty slow (for a GTA character), and then R* made it even more painful by giving us the slower Luis and even-slower-than-that Johnny. They don't need to be Tommy Vercetti speed, but just fast enough.

So you pull back on the left stick which is SUPPOSED to make your character turn around and run back and that is considered "very clunky"?

I understand the IV control scheme was difficult and maybe a little clunky. But overall it wasn't so bad that it warrants this thread.

Just saying.

For me, the success or failure of GTA 5 rests on the controls - indoor shootouts involving stairs, enemies behind doors, etc. in GTA 4 was torture, I would rather be tied up and have a starved rat in a bag placed over my head.

Aye, RDR and MP3 were an improvement but characters still need more zip for GTA 5....FPS view beckons
