Why were GTA 4 controls quite bad?

Even for it's time. I mean they didn't feel smooth at all, and were barely responsive.. Even compare it to a game released 1 year before it, AC, and that still has much smoother controls. The controls were alright on PC, but that's because the controls are always better on PC. In GTA 4 he would take ages to just turn around and turning was just slow.

 

And I hated how when the police opened their door and got out to get you, they would do some glitch and then pull their gun out, without closing the door so they sometimes could just be stuck standing there.

I didn't really like the driving controls either, but I'm not posting to speak about that.

It was there first attempt with a open world game. I know some might hate me saying this but GTA IV was a beta test for better games to come.

GTA IV was their first HD open world game. If you played RDR you would see the many improvement they did with the Rage engine.

Fine for me. I just hope the 'classic' control option returns in V.

 

Hate using R2/L2 to accelerate/brake.

They were just a little stiff. If RDR and MP3 are anything to go by, they've made significant improvements to them.

If you've played AC 2, what's your opinion of it's control smoothness compared to GTA 4? Because I feel that AC2 was just so much easier and better.

If you've played AC 2, what's your opinion of it's control smoothness compared to GTA 4? Because I feel that AC2 was just so much easier and better.

but AC is all about climbing over entire cities.. and GTA is about nicking the nearest car and slamming a cop on the hood

 

that isn't a good comparison... going on foot in gta iv was a little cluncky but i liked the driving a lot. red dead was more refined, and they aren't going to take a step back on the RAGe engine so i think it will turn out more than alright

Like Redx165 said, it was the first time a system like that was implemented in a game like GTA. They had no idea how it was going to work, and although they did a great job, there was a lot of complaints on the movements. It even angers me when i'm in a Police chase, and Niko just paces around when i'm smashing Y to steal a car.

I know, but when you're just running or turning or jogging in AC2. Compare that to GTA 4. I just don't see how GTA 4 was even good in terms of that.

No it's the game's fault (not to annoy anyone). I said responsiveness and clunkyness was the problem, not sensitivity.

I know, but when you're just running or turning or jogging in AC2. Compare that to GTA 4. I just don't see how GTA 4 was even good in terms of that.

i kind of ment that in AC, developers were able to put a lot of attention and detail into animating the walking, jogging and climbing because that is all there is.. in GTA there is the advanced physics engine, vehicle handeling etc that took up most of the time..

 

how to explain...

 

flying in gta will never be as good as in a flight simulator but a flight simulator doesn't let you land in a crowded street, sending cars fire and peds flying all over the place in a semi realistic manner. neither does AC and something has to be sacrificed to make up for the awesomness.. i guess in IV it was the rough on foot handeling

On foot, GTA IV is a very clunky game. I think that's because R* was unable to perfect the use of Euphoria at that time. The thing that probably annoys me the most is when you pull back on the left analog stick while sprinting, and then your character will turn around and run like five feet backwards. That's got me killed many times.

 

Also, I hope the characters in GTA V move faster. Niko was pretty slow (for a GTA character), and then R* made it even more painful by giving us the slower Luis and even-slower-than-that Johnny. They don't need to be Tommy Vercetti speed, but just fast enough.

The controllers where fine... in fact, I still play the game.... actually I have just turned it off. Nothing wrong with them at all.

 

This happened when Killzone 2 came out on PS3... all cod fanboys hated on the game because KZ2 controllers felt heavy compared to CoD4, doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them. just everyone adjusts to a game differently.

 

Overall... nothing wrong with the GTA4 controller. simple.

Instant 180 degree turn by looking behind and then aim.

You didn't slam Triangle, or Y to have Niko, or whoever walk around in circles? You didn't try running from the Police, to suddenly be stopped by a car who hits you because the character just nodded off and walked in a random direction? You didn't try to get into a fight and try to counter, just to have Niko or whoever get socked in the f*cking face? I mean, if you didn't I am jealous of the copy you got of GTA IV. Must've been the beta.

This is why I wish more GTA fans would play RDR and MP3. I don't even care if you end up liking those games or not, but too many people are still using GTA IV as an example for these discussions. This happens on both sides. Some people are concerned GTA V will control like GTA IV and some people honestly think GTA IV's controls were spot on.

 

GTA IV's controls needed work, so R* fixed them in RDR and improved them even more in MP3. Just play those other R* games and get an idea what GTA V will feel like. That will also stop people who complain every time somebody asks "what things from RDR and/or MP3 do you want in GTA V?", because you'll understand why they're asking such an obvious question.

This was all known before IV even came out.

The character was purposely given a sense of weight and gait.

You try running full speed and stopping on a penny for real.

How long does it take you to run in a circle?

 

It was done purposely which means it could be done again for V.

You're right, I probably wasn't the best on foot in GTA. But i'm not going to sit here and say that the developers didn't make a perfect game.

Maybe practice makes perfect because they seemed fine to me. Don't try and press the button to enter a car from a mile away, run right up to the door before you press it. Good timing will help you out in fistfights.

Ehhh, yeah no. The controls weren't perfect. Like anybody else in this thread will say, play RDR and you'll notice differences. RDR has more flow to it, and it's less interrupted like GTA's were. GTA's were stingy, and it seemed to be horrifically slow. I wasn't trying to press a button a mile away, or run up to the door before I pressed it either. I was directly next to a vehicle, pressing Y, with Niko walking around in circles.
