How to get over your fear of roller coasters?

Hey everyone, this weekend I'm going to Cedar Point with my school. As you may know, it has one of the largest selections of roller coasters on Earth, I believe it's in second place now since they took out a couple rides. However, I hate roller coasters. I'm going for everything else that's there. I'm not scared of heights, I just hate that feeling you get when going down the big hill. Everyone in my group is being a douche and making me go on a larger ride, only because it's right at the entrance and not further back. I want to start small at the Cedar Creek Mine Ride which is only 40 MPH and pretty small to get used to the feeling, but my friends want me to start on the Raptor, which goes 57 MPH and has several loops (the ride at the entrance). Is there anyway to stop your nervousness of going on the ride and also is there anyway to stop that feeling you get when going down the hill or at least suppress it? I don't want to sit back because the lines take at least 45 minutes to get through.

Just do it! I mean what's the worst thing that can happen?

Wait! It isn't over yet!

Seriously, though, just do it. There's nothing to be afraid of. The chances of there being an accident are like 1/1000. It's ok.

You know what, I'm going to do it. I'm going to try to enjoy that feeling as much as possible instead of thinking how much I hate it. If I truly hate it still, oh well, at least I want to try it out. It's only a 2 minute ride anyway, it would be over with before I know it.

Is there anyway to stop your nervousness

yes.

there is a way to stop your nervousness.

it's known as "suck it up" tounge2.gif

roller coasters operate MILLIONS of times a day all over the world and NOTHING goes wrong 99.99% of the time.

and even when something does go wrong, nobody usually dies. maybe a few broken bones.

roller coaster accidents are so rare that worrying about them is like worrying about getting struck by lighting WHILE being mauled by a bear.

it's not gonna' happen.

suck it up and go on every single roller coaster in the park. you'll have a great time and never be scared again.

Exactly. Except for the "It's only a 2 minute ride anyway, it would be over with before I know it" part. Just remember this: You will enjoy it. If you feel scared, just scream your soul out of your body until you're mute. Trust me, screaming helps a lot.

First, think about what you hate. 2nd, think about WHY you hate it.

If it sounds within the realm of logic and reason, do not do it.

If it sounds illogical or childish, man up and do it. [ Ex. I fear/hate it just because I do ]

To know how to man up, follow these easy steps:

1- Do it.

2- If you end up scared or worried, you did it wrong. Anything else and you did it the right way biggrin.gif

That said, I do not find the fun in roller coasters so, meh.

I used to be scared of coasters too. I overcame my fear by riding the fastest, highest ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain when I was on a trip to California. Its called Supreme Scream. At first when I saw it I was like "holy sh*t, i ain't boardin this sh*t dad." And then, when I was half way through it and about to hit the ramp, I was like "oh man, i am gonna puke my balls, intestines, kidneys and all my body organs out." Finally I thought "hah look, it's nothing other than a retarded train with retarded passengers." And if I were you, I would beat the sh*t out of anyone who's gonna occupy the front seat, and I'll throw myself there, cause there's this fat girl Jamie who'd stuff her belly as much as she could prior to the ride, and if I'm gonna sit behind her, I'll probably return with my face splatterd with her green puke.

If you're a scary roller coaster passenger and you if you feel the urge to pee amidst the ride, just let it flow, man.

I go up to Marblehead every summer to visit family, and make a point to visit Cedar Point every time. The dragster is probably one of the most exciting experiences you'll ever have at a theme park (but I prefer the Millenium Force), and if you're only going there as a one time thing you owe it to yourself to go on it.

Also I want to recommend avoiding the Mean Streak. You're head is strapped into a hard rubber harness, the bumpiness bangs your head on the harness so much that it'll literally give you a headache, and along with that it usually lasts at least three minutes. If you do try it do it later in the day and bring a pain killer.

e: Here are some reviews to back me up on that.

Ahhh nate, another Ohioan? Or are you visiting from out of state?

I have yet to ever ride a rollercoaster as well. The heights scare the f*ck out of me (not as much anymore). However, our class is trying to raise funds to go this year, and if there is any time for me to suck it up and Just Do It™, it will be this year. I am in my junior year, and have yet to do anything social whatsoever that is school related. I also want to be a pilot someday. Rollercoasters might as well be my first step to an iron stomach tounge.gif

Try not to put much thought into it. If you think about it too much, you will just work yourself sick and doom yourself. Freestyle motocross is obviously a very f*cking dangerous sport. When riders overthink their next stunt, sh*t hits the fan. Same rule can apply here.

This, and the fact that they would be waiting in line for at least 45 minutes, so I don't just wanna sit around and do nothing. And also about your last post fatality, yes, I'm from Ohio. Cleveland suburbs to be exact. And you're right, I can't put too much thought into it. I did for the past couple days, and the thought of it scared me. I'm just going to go along with the week, and not try to think about riding it. When I'm in line, I will just talk to my friends about other topics.

It's one of the most thrilling things you could ever do.

Roller coasters? Thrilling? Compared to what? Sitting on a couch?

Just in comparable price range there is climbing (can actually be way cheaper), diving, skiing, snowboarding, kite boarding, windsurfing, water skiing, and probably a few things I'm forgetting. If you are willing to spend a bit more money, there is flying, paragliding, base jumping, wingsuit flying, and speed riding/flying. All of which are miles more thrilling, some allowing you recreate all the same moves without the rails.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

It's only scary for less then a second. Nothing to it. There's scarier things in life then rollercoasters.

Also at the scary parts, everyone or almost everyone will be screaming in fear. Join them. It helps.

What's so scary about rollercoaster rides? It's the most thrilling thing to happen. Just don't think of anything scary, just shout out like you never ride it before.

I don't find coasters scary (or at least not that scary). The only thing I don't like about them is when they have poor ergonomics and/or operation (things like crushing you in your seat, banging your head into something like a cage, or holding you upside down for an unnecessary period of time thus making blood rush to your head). However, a well-built coaster that's comfortable to ride in is quite a thrill. I believe one coaster I've been on in my life has a drop going roughly 70 miles per hour, and that's just awesome! Also, you shouldn't be scared to go down (pun not intended). Despite all of the screaming on the ride down, the ride upwards is honestly scarier.

I was absolutely terrified of them back in the day, we visited a few theme parks but I simply didn't go,I was like 12 and I cried because I was so scared.

A year later I just decided "f*ck it" and did it, now I will ride them, but I still don't like them, the phobia is gone, it's not a paralyzing fear.

I was in a similar circumstance back in the 4th grade. My school choir (which I was in blush.gif ) went on a field trip to Six Flags Over Texas near Dallas to sing and ride rides one night. I was terrified of roller coasters and hadn't ridden one in my entire life. We broke off into groups and I tried to hang with the pussiest-looking group I could find so I wouldn't have to ride roller coasters. Little did I know, this turned out to be one of the only groups that would ride roller coasters. To make matters worse, they wanted to ride one of the new roller coasters that the park had just built THAT YEAR suicidal.gif ...

...this son of a bitch was called the "The Titan". It was and still is one of the fastest steel roller coasters in the world. Hows that for a 9 year-old's first ever roller coaster experience lol.gif ? Thought I was going to talk my way out of it, but even the biggest pussy in our class was excited to ride this thing. So socially, sitting out wasn't an option. After nearly fainting from nervousness, I was broken in by one of the scariest rides of my life. However afterwards, the pleasure and pride dominated all feelings of fear and anxiety. The morals of the story are to just go for it, don't think about it, and remember that people who were mentally weaker than you have done it. Just pretend you're a fighter pilot. I know it sounds silly, but make up a narrative in your head like you would do as a young child. It works. If all else fails...

...Xanax. But you don't want to go down that road.

Yeah, I watched Final Destination back in the day and since then.. f*ck roller coasters. For those who say ''You only live once'' I have just one thing to say: You only die once, so stop bullsh*tting.

I am scared of heights but i love Rollercoasters. I only really fear heights when its not safe, when I'm strapped and locked in safe i am fine.

But being afraid of something is not as easy as saying "Oh you'll be fine" Just about finding the desire to really want to over come your fear.
