3 Characters and not one of them female?

Did you actually watch the video and note what the publishers, the people who fund games, said?

That there's a 'Oh we don't want females as marketing tells us...' mindset? (Which by the way is BS), The new TR sold well bu was still deemed a failure by the publisher, SqEnix.

BG&E was a fantastic, FANTASTIC game, but the problems with getting a publisher were touched on. THe male/female split is 60/40, yet all the suits see is males exclusively playing games, which isn't getting anywhere at all.

You said Mirror's Edge. There was a backlash for DICE for not making Faith 'Asian' or 'Pretty' enough. Again, BS.

There were some things there that were eyebrow raising, yes, but they are probably specific to a few execs and their folly in judgement of how they say stuff and not necessarily meaning to hurt anyone, just going by data and numbers and potentially being one of those clueless execs who play wow all day that we hear about tounge.gif

Women really are making strides in gaming. And when I say that, I don't mean or entertain the notion that oh you can play as a woman in all these games I named and this and that, but more so in the almost "coming out" of female gamers and female game developers.

The industry has certainly been calling for women, and trying to appeal to women - but in the right ways. Look at the huge success of mass effect 3 and its female writer (players' distaste for how the trilogy ends aside). They made a big deal of her, they are inviting women in - that piece [the video] can serve as the dangers of that kind of environment for perhaps some but not all studios, but for the most part, more and more women are gaming and creating games, and things are perhaps a little too easy to twist into, again, hysterical propaganda.

Plenty of females helped make GTA IV, and I'm sure for the most part they had a blast, even if it truly does get crazy at rockstar offices.

Do you really want to warp the young minds of women into thinking their role is to be niko bellic? It's not even that deep of a discussion - really, the question is one of legitimacy.

To maintain a realistic level of suspension of disbelief, you simply cannot throw miley cyrus in there firing miniguns at the cops and getting shot up and narrowly escaping by jacking a car with a 6 foot man's man in there toting a golf club or shovel for some ungodly reason lol.

I am being very exaggerated, but honestly, I doubt women really would enjoy playing as Elizibetha any more than men would if the missions and stuff were all the same - it just wouldn't feel right, legitimate, for lack of a better word "realistic" or "believable".

Now, do a DLC of a woman protagonist deeply intertwined in the story with completely different, stealth and tactical/strategy based missions of some form of espionage (stealing plans for vaults etc), that could be pulled off, but a whole game of those things would get really boring. And a real man would never send a woman to do the sh*t that niko bellic does, so I mean, when GTA itself is in question, really, it doesn't belong anywhere near the "females in gaming" conversation, as ridiculous as I already found saints row series to be, playing it as a female for some reason felt even more fake and stupid - because I would never expect a female to be doing that stuff, but I can appreciate females enjoying the fantasy, but that's what it is - is fantasy - and fantasy is big for women, MMORPG is loaded with chicks (brotip), and GTA may be fantastical in some ways, but the target is realistic gritty crime fun with simulation of a city to mess around in while working for criminals doing dastardly stuff and laughing about the rejects that are parodied from real life "we all know that guy" in GTA games lol. Women don't fit in it without changing it and you need a serious female gangbabger somewhere to write it with you or something to make it remotely believeable - and, believe me - Chica's missions are different than Chico's in criminal world, so it would not be GTA. A GTA dlc? Maybe. A straight up game? They'd call it something else and it'd be 'somewhat like' gta. I have a very hard time believing a female commander Sheppard could exist also, but that's a whole different game, and I like playing my female in ME1 and 2 also (actually I boycotted 3 because of Origin requirement on PC).

The movies they've drawn from in the past, the movies they've drawn from for GTA V that we know of so far - it would be totally illegitimate and unbelievable, and hard for a man to write, and too much to deal with, making sure he makes a "realistic woman", and easier by ten fold for, again, a man (dan houser, main writer lead) to instead portray women as the main character sees them, as they portray themselves to him -

Perhaps if a woman wrote a GTA, she could put a woman in in a realistic way, especially since now they are switching characters - now you can bring women along. Let's see what the woman in the truck getaway screenshot's profession is. Less likely is it to be shooting, and more likely safe cracking or something else technical like that.

You go on about 'realism' and how it's 'realistic' and then mention GTA? Really? Weak argument considering GTA is not at all realistic. It is set in a fictional universe, so who is to say in that universe that women MUST be like Niko or Luis or Johnny. It isn't based in our real world, it is a fictional, written world. So it does not (and shouldn't) adhere to the real world rules, do you want one AK bullet to kill Trever or Franklin or spend hours in a cutscene when you buy a new car or a safehouse? There's breaks from reality and having female characters is one that's backed up by data.

And no having a woman writing it changes nothing if the suits say that male characters sell more, they'll want a male character as a lead. Lastly, no it isn't limited to a few execs, it's an industry wide issue as far as the BG&E mindset, there is a mindset that all gamers are a. Male and b. virgins and c. early 20s.

Your assertion that the ending controversy for ME3 was solely down to a female writing it is stupid, it is down to how the ending was implemented (which is again, a decision made by suits in boardrooms)

Jim Sterling does not exactly go an d make propaganda. Go read his articles on RPS, go read anything he's written and then tell me if it's all hyperbole and easy to twist?

EDIT: To expand on the Mirror's Edge drama, players (male players at that) were photoshopping Faith onto bodies they found attractive, which were impractical or free running, the devs got frustrated by both that and the criticism of them for making Faith (again in male player minds) an ugly character.

Okay, How is Faith ugly?

I agree with this video, that it is artistically limiting for videogame developers that the fanbase is mostly male and uncomfortable with certain gender roles, but I think this is a problem for videogames that are more fantasy and less reality based than GTA.

In many games a female lead can be an interesting artistic choice. In GTA it takes away the vibe though, because it is a crime game, and a female mass murderer/bank robber doesn't feel realistic. The only character that felt right as a female GTA criminal was Catalina, but I don't think she would make a good lead (well now that I think of it, maybe she would in a multiple protagonist system). Games use real life stereotypes, and it's hard to find a female criminal stereotype that fits well as a GTA lead. Maybe you could switch Trevor for Catalina though, now that I think of it. That could work, but it's tough to make it work, and I think Trevor is a very good character too.

I can't name one girl that I know that is going to buy GTA v. I can't name one girl that plays GTA. People play GTA to do things they can't do in real life. They play GTA to assimilate with the character. I don't want to get home from a long day at work and go on a killing spree as a female? I want to use a man. Someone I can relate to. Its pure marketing. f*ck a female protag

GTAV is a story-driven game and his writers thought that a female protagonist wouldn't work, period.

Female protagonist for me, would equal one less character to play as. There is no way i'd find any sort of amusement playing as a female. Give me a f*ckin break. The worst part of all is i'd be forced to play as her in certain missions, this would just completely kill GTA. It may work in other games, but NOT Grand Theft Auto.

It would not have been feasible for R* to include a woman in GTAV as it would be incredibly difficult to carry out a heist from the kitchen

I am a bit proud of some for the good reasons now, thank you for this.

Question... Leave the title a bit. Think that there would be a game in a GTA scale world and immersion, a crime story with adult tone and all intact. You would not even know who made it. You get a female leading character, and can do the same as in other GTA games.

The main character, if female but immersive and believable, would break your game? You guys would mod her out from your own?

Or just shrug it off by thinking it is not important and you can enjoy the game, even if a modded character would make it more fun to you? For this solution i find commrndable.

But think a bit - we know men loves sexy females. Statistics shown that stronger female characters are quite liked, especially due they can still be complex and interesting... And not everyone is distracted by the sexy.

Then what would be making the whole GTA series unplayable? The first one had it as a cosmetic choice. Why you think that being female and strong implies uglyness or crazy behaviour?

I am just curious as i had been a bit too much agressive negative behaviour against the very concept, as if it would take away the story, break the fun car chases, jam your guns and would turn the game into a oint and click adventure..

Which is a bit the reasons why we did not received a believable female lead in games or movies guess... So people think that only males can pull off great things, and, for instance, Richard I was better than Queen Victoria in the same situations for some reason.

I mean, think Portal. Te main character is female. GLaDOS is honestly well-written in personality. She could be a fine basis for a human character, as Claude and CJ both shown such passive aggressive tendencies (when you did not fended the army off by burning down the city. biggrin.gif).

Or think any Elder Scrolls game: the sex of a character not changes all the story into that dreaded pink and glittering magical pony land as some feared, as your female still can do the same without immersion breaking.

The thing is that women aren't as strong as men (especially not the ones most people would want to play as) and also when it comes to physical activity and sports they aren't as good as males and they don't have that competition mentality.

If you're looking for immersion you can't have a 115lbs girl beat up 230lbs goons on a daily basis

I wouldn't say they've dropped the ball exactly, but I'm surprised that this far down the line, we haven't had a female character.

That said, I think there are significantly fewer female career criminals than males.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

Well, that is quite a fine point. But i do think it is plausible, with evasion or by a jump. Or a three tons car. biggrin.gif

Most you say do holds on most, but not all. Still very nice to see a good reasoning here. smile.gif

A female protagonist could work with the right story. There are plenty of small lady's that know how to kick butt.

Ι couldn't imagine a woman beating up 2-3 guys at the same time. Αlso, when I play the game I want to feel like I am the character that I control, (especially during the storyline) which is impossible to happen if I am controlling a woman.

I don't want a female character in a GTA game.

If I want to play as a girl, I will play online.

There are plenty of Women who feel the same way. My Girl loves GTA regardless of the character.

As for me, I just want a good story and an awesome playground with lots of toys. happy.gif

PS, Catalina could make a good GTA protag.
