Alright, so next week, I'm heading to gamestop to preorder The Last of Us. I thought I'd pick up either Tomb Raider or Bioshock Infinite since I've heard a lot of good things from both. But... I just can't decide which.

Pro-Bioshock:

  • It comes with the first Bioshock, so it's two games for the price of one. I already have the second, so it's a good chance to play through the whole series at once.
  • I really like the art style and atmosphere they went with.
  • I enjoy single-player games.
Anti-Bioshock :
  • I bought the second Bioshock when it was on sale but I just couldn't finish it, it just bored me. I HAVE heard that the second wasn't developed by the same guys, though.
  • I usually don't enjoy FPS unless the story really grabs me.

Pro-Tomb Raider:

  • I prefer third-person to first-person.
  • I've heard that it's open-world, which I'm a big fan of.
Anti-Tomb Raider:
  • It looks a lot like Uncharted. I have the first two Uncharted games, and while they ARE awesome, the gameplay bores me after an hour or two. It took me a month or so to beat the first one, I haven't touched the second one yet because I wanted to play through the first to refresh my memory on the story.
  • I never really enjoyed the other Tomb Raiders, but I heard this is a whole revamp of them.

So, what do you guys think I should get? Or do you think I should check out another game that's come out this year (I haven't bought any 2013 games)?

I understand this is a forum, and we can advise you on what we think are the pros and cons of a game. But bottom line is it will always come down to what you prefer the look of.

A few points need to made here, first among which is that Tomb Raider is not open world it just has similar elements to a game that is open world, the game's world layout and structure is quite similar to the original Bioshock's so if you're wondering what Tomb Raider's gameworld's like just know that you won't be able to freeroam like you want to should you purchase the game.

Secondly Tomb Raider's a shorter game then Bioshock infinite and the story is almost certainly inferior, though it was interesting to see Lara grow as a person and see her change in to the tomb raiding archaeologist that we know her as today it's certainly not on the level of Brooker and Elizabeth's journey through Columbia. So if you're interested in the Bioshock storyline (which you seem to be from the opening post) have no fear it remains great and in my personal opinion Bioshock Infinite is the series high point in terms of writing and storytelling.

So it's easy to see which is the better game, Bioshock Infinite is a much more unique experience then Tomb Raider and that's simply because where Tomb Raider follows old trends and uses all of the tips and tricks of modern game design to make itself good (basically turning itself into somewhat of an Uncharted clone) Bioshock Infinite reinvents the wheel and offers the player an experience that simply can't be found anywhere else on the market today. There is however one large criticism of Bioshock Infinite's that I must point out, the story offers a tale that the gunplay can't compete with; often when I was travelling through the city of Columbia I found myself so engrossed in the story the game was weaving that I found myself gaining a rather strong distaste for the combat sections that popped up far too frequently.

The game's only saving grace in this matter are the skyrails that allow the player to effortlessly leap and bound across the gameworld taking down enemies and navigating through the game's harshest environments with relative ease. My only complaint with this feature is that it doesn't show up enough leaving a large majority of the gunplay in the game to be, surprisingly weak and unfortunately for you this'll occur quite often during your journey through Columbia.

All in all Bioshock Infinite is clearly the better game, but it has its faults that too many people fail to notice and too few people voice their criticisms of said features. Regardless if you want my honest opinion I'd say go with Bioshock, if however you're really into third person action games and you're interested in exploring the rural environment that Tomb Raider has to offer I'd recommend that. In short it all comes down to personal preference but the better game in this situation is Bioshock Infinite, whether you choose to buy it or not is entirely up to you.

If you cant pick yourself then you must not really want either that bad, Id say if you have to pick between the two and dont want either that bad just wait until something comes out that you do want.

I do want both, and I will get both. The thing is that I don't have money for both right now, so I have to pick one.

G The Generous

this is my opinion so don't take it too seriously.

Bioshock Infinite is a great game, but too overrated if you ask me. no way this game would be 2013 GOTY. best story of 2013 maybe, but GOTY? please, no.

the gameplay is "average good", but it doesn't blend well with the "inception style" story. shooting gun makes you feel real and powerful but it's quite slow-paced (or the main character is too damn slow), and not as challenging and classic as the previous Bioshock.

the atmosphere and art style are amazing, but it not happens everytime (some levels are excellent, mostly first half of the game, but some are just... feel dull, lack of good level design).

long story short: it's a better game than Bio 2, and a great game with good story. but it doesn't live up to its hype and it made me feel regret for spending full price for it (goddamn). but since you enjoy a good story, I think you can get along just fine.

for Tomb Raider, I find it more enjoyable and memorable than Bioshock Infinite. maybe it's because I love the "adventure treasure hunter" setting. but the game is better than I expected.

I praise this game for the setting and story (Japanese mythical Yamatai blend with real life Dragon's Triangle? PERFECT!). the amazing graphic helps increase the atmosphere. there is a few plot hole but I don't mind it at all

gameplay is similar to Uncharted, but still can be too damn easy even on hard mode. there is no real "puzzle", which is a bad point of the game, but it does have "adventuring".

lot of people bashing on this game, mostly classic TR fan. I don't really understand that, I have played the classic series and the reboot didn't disappoint me even a bit.

both games are not really long, Bioshock is longer but I think the replay value of TR is better.

well, keep in mind that's just my opinion.
