Claude4Catalina
I appreciate a good story but I did find the opening handful of missions a touch tedious; but given how the rest of the game pans out, it's worth it and makes you appreciate the shootouts more; I think if it started as a shoot 'em up, the end product would be a game of muscle memory: aim, fire twice, repeat until reload, repeat until mission's end. Johan
I say give it another hour and a half and it'll pick up, this is actually how most of Rockstar's games start out you should know that by now.
LittleBlueTroll
Ok i have a question, i bought this on release day, played it for a day or so and got to the mission where you have to race a horse and carriage for some fat bald bloke (Forgot his name) I lost the race a couple times along with my interest. And I've never touched it since. Now admittedly it wasn't that far into the game, but does it pick up soon from there? Because i wont lie by that point i was bored. WedgeAntilles
I loved how this game started, I wish that they had included cattle herding and other ranch duties as a mini game.

GR7
I agree with you OP, maybe it's just not my game but I found most of it boring compared to GTA. I'm not exactly sure why the game didn't really click with me, could be because of how empty the gameworld is which i know was done on purpose butI personally didn't like it. That being said the game does pick up after a while and the story is much better than GTAIV's, but after the story was finished the game just felt empty for me, I couldn't even get into the multiplayer which is weird because on paper its better than GTAIV's in every way and I love IV's multiplayer. nlitement
At this point, I'm actually not sure why R* still makes the tutorials expand through so many missions in their games. Anybody that has been playing their games for years generally catches onto the controls and gameplay elements faster than what R* thinks they do. As for Red Dead Redemption, it does start to pick up, but I agree that the "tutorial" missions at the beginning are kind of tedious, if not quite unnecessary. Then again, I suppose they might help some people grow closer to characters like Bonnie. I really enjoyed the tutorial missions. It just lets me take in the story and atmosphere, and get on level with John Marston. If it went straight into gun fights, it would make no sense within the context of the story and it would ruin the immersion. Just imagine, with Marston constantly saying "my life of banditry and gunfights are long gone" and suddenly he's taking on the Mexican Army. It would make no sense. orbitalraindrops
No, the entire game is rabbit hunting and farm work. The pictures of gun fights on the back of the box are lying to you. I never suggested it was, just because a game looks interesting, doesn't mean it is. How do you think games are sold in the first place.. What? So you don't think there are gun fights in it at all? Its a thing called "pacing," its introducing the characters and story (not to mention gameplay mechanics) first before throwing the action at you later, so that it eases you into the game nicely. What I meant was, when I do get to all the gunfights and stuff, is it really that good? was it worth all the suffering of the terrible starting missions? You "suffered" playing RDR's tutorial missions? Just quit playing NOW. Your attention span is pathetic. You obviously don't enjoy the finer things, like pacing, variety, roleplay, etc. (which, frankly, is your loss). Saints Row or CoD might suit an uninspired sperg like you better. Dont be so elitist bro. To each there own.

There's a lot more to RDR than what meets the eye. If your interest did not pick up that far into the game then you should stick to call of duty. It's not for everyone. If it's not your cup of tea then it just isn't.

bluetops
I will also warn you that the ending missions are also like that. If you're into some more linear action, I think RDR is not for you. I just love RDR because of the scenery, the surroundings, the trains, the annoying cougars and bears. Bounty hunting is also kind of fun. I didn't enjoyed it much because of the story, probably because I spoiled the ending. Edited May 20, 2013 by bluetops
DeafMetal
lol yep the starting Bonnie missions are a hassle. They'll all turn into action in a short while. If you still don't like it, then put the game down for a few weeks, pick it up when you FEEL like playing it. Once in a while, I pick up a great game, but I just don't WANT to play it, so I'd basically force myself to finish it, not actually enjoying it, instead feeling like a chore. If I put the game down until I actually feel like it, though, I enjoy it to its full extent and see how great it truly is. I've gone through that with Resistance, Arkham City, Infamous, Assassin's Creed 2, and loads of others.

Freezer89
woah, alot of butthurt from a simple question. Yeah, well.. what did you expect? For many people RDR is one of the best games ever. Also I disagree respectfully about the first missions (or rather: tutorials) being the worst in any R* game.

arsenal_fan
I enjoyed the tutorial missions and love them in any game as long as they don't go too far, I didn't like it in Max Payne 3 where instantly your thrown into the action and expected to know the controls instantly. I never had that panic 'WTF do I do?' moment in RDR as it eased me into the game really well.

Fireman
I think it all comes down to a one question, "do you enjoy westerns or not". But then I've played Gun, f*cking love it. Played RDR, meh'd out because of the amount of side-stuff to do and the main quest/storyline being rather dull (yes Gun had a cliche storyline as well, but it kept me more interested since most missions actually had something to do with the storyline. Kill Frenzy!
I shall explain my feelings for Red Dead Redemption. Great game, enough said. I pre-order that game back in 2010, I bought it, played it, great game! But I sold it after I finished the game. In multiplayer I came so far as I could "Legend" but It's not that type of game I shall repeat playing again again cause it get bored fast like the emptiness Liberty City from GTA IV. I didn't sell GTA IV because I collect all GTA's for my collection and I've still the same game I bought in 2008. Next, Certainly, I will buy Red Dead 3. Flachbau
I just got to the part where you get into Mexico. My question is, am I getting close to the end? How many more missions? I plan on finishing this before August so I can start another game.

StateofMind15
Don't get exited for the gunplay parts. They're god damn boring because your health regenerates and it takes like 8 shots for you to die. So if you like being partially invincible then yes the game will get more exciting as you progress.
Daz
I totally agree with you. Basically how the game works is when you are in the northern part of the map, most missions are bullsh*t life simulation or tutorials, when you are in the southern part of the map, it is just repetitive missions with no real unique features, then back up in the northern part of the map you go back to tutorials and life simulation crap yet again. There may be the odd few decent missions but nothing I can even remember worth mentioning. I love the game engine, the MP Free roam is awesome, but the singleplayer is tedious bore with annoying as f*ck game features and animations. Getting taught how to climb a ladder 20 hours into a game is f*cking stupid. Forcing you to go back to daily life herding cattle near the end pissed me off too among many other things. What sucks is it is a great engine being used by a game with a sh*tty uninteresting uninspired storyline. The game feels like a modern hipster's take on the west, and not something authentic that you might have found in call of juarez or red dead revolver. The 'life simulation' part near the end was to slow the pace right down, and change the ambience to give the very end of the game more impact. It's the best designed part of the storyline imo - not that I was impressed with the way they delivered the story though - I had a similar problem to you during other parts of the game. There were times on my second playthru - during the Dickens and Mexico chapters - where I wanted to blow my own brains out because of the shear tedium of it all. They could have done away with all of that and made them optional side quests. The story is waaaay to long and has far too much filler for the story they are trying to tell. By the end I was glad they killed the errand boy.
