I much rather see Rockstar pad out their schedule with other games and build franchises alongside GTA. LA Noire, Red Dead, Max Payne, Bully... potentially Agent too.

And they can improve a lot on their ability to make deadlines. All their games are over budget and delayed, that can't be sustainable in the long term. But it's worth it now if it means they can go into next gen with a good engine (check), large enough teams (check) and arsenal of franchises (check). Betting on 1 horse (GTA) would be bad strategy. They have that solid foundation now (they didn't have that going into the current cycle) so if they get their deadlines right.... not a lot of developers outside of the big 3 (EA/acti/ubi) have that kind of muscle but that is going to decide who stands or falls when the next consoles arrive.

I don't care how long each GTA takes to make, as long as they keep making them.

I still play all the other GTA's, so the wait wasn't that hard for V.

Agreed. Don't mind the wait, as long as they keep putting as much effort into the games. Doing 1 every year would be stupid.

Miss Darko

I think we can expect next-gen R* games to not take significantly longer than current gen R* games, or maybe even have shorter development times. There's a higher degree of fidelity required than now, which increases development time, but the current gen consoles were notoriously difficult to work with, because of their strange architecture. The next-gen consoles are apparently supposed to be easier to develop games for, because their architecture is more similar to that of a PC's.

I wonder what Duke Nukem fans feel then, since its sequel was in production nearly 15 years and turned out to be complete crap after all! lol.gif ...i mean like what the hell were they doing all these years? sitting their balls off, drinking bear, watching movies on big plasma 24/7? lol.gif ...poor DN fans i feel really sorry for them! I've heard some fans even committed suicide!

GTA IV Took 3 years to come out.

GTA V Took 5 years.

(Release Red Dead Rebellion Next)

GTA 6 Should take 2 years.

(Bully 2 Comes out?)

(Manhunt 3 comes out?)

(New Midnight Club?)

(Rockstar continues works on GTA 7...)

GTA 7 Another 5 years.

i'd rather this.

Yes, that last sentence definitely rings true for me. I play most of Rockstar's games for many more years than I had to wait for them & that is especially true with GTA games. If I stopped playing IV (like many do) after a year or two, then I'd probably say the wait might not have been worth it. I'll play V right up until (and after) the release of GTA VI.

If they switched to yearly release I would give up on GTA within a few years. I got bored of the Tony Hawk's games, Call of Duty games and Assassin's Creed games. Rockstar are doing it right. How many games have they released for GTA over 15 years and people still go crazy for a new game.

I don't see a problem with waiting 5 years for a new GTA because Rockstar's entire stable of games over the course of this generation has been a study in refining GTAV. Everything from GTAIV to Table Tennis to Max Payne 3 has helped set the playing field for GTAV and taught Rockstar more and more about how to mine these consoles for all their worth.

GTA IV - The most obvious influence of this generation of games, GTAIV set the bar for open-world games for this generation. Everything from Saints Row to Batman Arkham owes GTAIV a little nod for showing what this generation would be capable of early on. Everything from mission pacing to a new combat system to vehicle physics was a lesson to be learned and polished. The biggest credit that can attributed to GTA IV and seen easily in GTAV is the three point story structure inspired by films like "Pulp Fiction", "Traffic" and "Crash", which told the story of a stolen bag of diamonds through the eyes of Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz and Luis Lopez. Three radically different men all entangled in a journey to a better way of life. This unique style of storytelling has now set the stage for GTAV as we prepare to pull off the mother of all heists as Michael, Franklin and Trevor.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles - Another heavy influence on GTAV, MCLA taught Rockstar a lot about just how well vehicle physics could be handled by the powerful and diverse RAGE engine. With GTAV said to lean more towards and arcade driving experience while keeping realism a focus by way of real-world physics applications, I'm sure all the hard work put into MCLA in the early years of this generation will pay off resulting in a new way of approaching how we handle the lay of the road in GTAV. In addition, Rockstar will be bringing over a set of MCLA's robust vehicle customization features to GTAV; a long requested addition since we last bounced on hydraulics and hit the NOS in San Andreas.

Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis - Releasing two years before GTAIV, Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis was a study in physics and the finite movements of their characters. The first game to test the limits of the RAGE for this generation, Table Tennis showcased just how well the RAGE engine and Euphoria could handle the twitch-based gameplay of a game of table tennis or even... a shootout to come in GTAIV? The way characters moved, turned and adjusted with lightning precision proved to be an experience Rockstar could lean on when developing even the most subtle movements of its characters in games to follow. It also probably doesn't hurt that this experience also more than pushed forward the decision to add a fully playable tennis court in GTAV.

Red Dead Redemption - The tale of John Marston was a finely crafted story that saw Rockstar expand its open-world ambitions tackling simulations in animal AI, physics, structure and animation; as well varying environments and weather systems. All of which will be seen in GTAV. From the mountain ranges of northern California, to the broad and sprawling prarie lands and down to the flat, yet reaching desert of Northern Mexico, Red Dead Redemption taught Rockstar a lot about varying terrain environments. Which is already evident in GTAV when taking into the consideration the varying starting points of each of our protagonists. From the desert towns of Trevor's Blaine County, to the inner-city of Los Santos Franklin calls home and all the way up to Michael's lush mansion in the Vinewood hills; Rockstar's experience with Red Dead Redemption has definitely paid off. And again, they tweaked the gunplay just a bit.

Max Payne 3 - The cinematic presentation of the story of broken, former officer of New York City's finest escaping the pain of losing his family and the betrayal of former friends and comrades to a private security detail for a Brazilian politician, gave Rockstar the chance to flex its storytelling muscle like never before. Also, a refinement of all its lessons learned to date, the intense gunplay, attention to detail and artistic use of physics systems can already be felt in GTAV's early previews when describing the visceral feel of its gunplay. Lending its three-tier aiming system, robust cover system and varying stances as well as a new combat jog and prone roll, Max Payne 3 has had a heavy, almost exact influence on GTAV's shootouts as previews are saying. Michael and Franklin even borrow a little of Max's swagger in the form of bullet time and speed time (the ability to slow down time for precision turns maneuvers while driving) special abilities respectively.

So again for all those worrying about just how long of a wait the next GTA game can be, let's just remember that Rockstar never seems to do anything without reason when developing their games. If you ask me, GTAV will be well worth the wait.

That is a very detailed and well thought out post. Reading through it it shows the careful and meticulous planning Rockstar Games make in the evolution of its' products which we as the consumer subconsciously appreciate. colgate.gif It is these characteristics that set Rockstar Games apart from developers who set themselves only aiming for the lowest common denominator.

Cheers. smile.gif

As to your question about what Duke Nukem fans felt unfortunately it was being produced by a developer which wasn't very disciplined in its approach to producing video games. I hope this article can provide more info. smile.gif

Cracked article go to #4 on the list.

Cracked article #2 go to #1 on the list.

The articles may be somewhat out of date but they give you a history of the poor development with Duke Nukem.

Personally, I'm more than happy with the long waits. I've always viewed each GTA as an event above and beyond any other game, and I'm happy with the time-delays as long as Rockstar keep producing the quality that they always have. I still go back and play the "III-era" and have anough things game-wise to keep me busy between releases, so I don't really mind smile.gif

I do want 5+ year gaps!

I mean every GTA game is so great and full of content that you can easily spend 5 years playing the game and still enjoying it.

Every GTA has been great, since III, anyway.

The longest I have ever played a GTA on a fairly regular basis was San Andreas for about 3.5 years. III, IV, and Vice City were a lot of fun but didn't last much longer than a couple of years.

I go back to all of them on occasion, but very rarely, and they don't entertain me for long. I just cant play a game constantly for 5 years.

Not only that, but we've had 4 main GTA's in about 13 years, plus two 'stories'. At the current rate, in the next 13 years we'll only get 2 GTAs. I'm going to be in my 40s before GTA 8 comes out.

The main reason the games take so long now I think is because they work on many more games than just GTA, and these are big titles as well, with a lot of work in them.

With GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas they did have a couple other titles, Midnight Club, The Warriors, and Manhunt, but they weren't as big titles like the current games.

Nowadays, since IV released they had Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, L.A Noire and they're working on Agent somewhere in the background, those were all AAA games/were intended to be.

They are taking more time for titles, but I don't think massively so, they are juggling many more tasks at once so it's spread out more, and I would love a more frequent GTA, at the same time having more frequent titles isn't necessarily a good thing. I feel part of the reason they are taking longer is so they don't saturate people with GTA, GTA is not like Mario, it has to innovate/change for people to keep buying it, and if it's coming out all the time, there won't be enough change from the last one to make it worthwhile.

You never think you will get sick of something, but after you have too much, one day you do, R* and T2 are trying to prolong their franchise, because this is what keeps R* and probably T2 afloat, at least until their other titles build a big following.

Im totally against the yearly releases of games but 5+ years is too much of a wait. A new game every 3 years sounds perfect.

The wait doesn't bother me. Unfortunately AC has fallen victim to over saturation also. Black flag doesn't excite me that much at all. It looks great and I'll most definitely buy it, but it's not something I'll crave.

Like how the Olympics only come around once every 4 years there's something special about a GTA release a long time in the making. 5+ years is excessive for some people, but the wait is softened by other great R* titles. smile.gif

I understand everyone in this thread saying that the more developers take their time to make the game - the better it is, however you seem to forget one thing, its not always the longer wait - the better!...I have lots of examples of games, that been in development for much more than GTAV and believe me all those examples are horrible (and yes those include Duke Nukem Forever as you might have guessed already!...but not limited to only this game...)! Just as well as lots of examples of games that been in development for less then three years and are bloody awesome!...it is not "the longer wait - the better" kind of situation! It is - "WHO DEVELOPS this game" kind of situation! And by WHO DEVELOPS i mean not the company itself, but each key members of said company individually! Each of them form formula of success for any game out there! Just look what happened to Mass Effect when key members left the project! i can go on and on! No people its not longer - the better, its because R* develops it with the key members that are formed from the start of the series, because nobody knows their game better then they're and as long as R* develops GTA franchise with this key members kept in a company it doesn't matter if next installment comes in 2 years time or 6 years, it'll be equally awesome!

Yeah & if Take-Two told the Houser's, The Benz & the other key players to 'cut development time in half', then there's a good chance they would take their talent elsewhere.

Another thing I hear people say is "just hire more developers". Ever heard the expression 'Too many cooks spoils the broth'? I can guarantee you the quality of the game would suffer if they took on more staff & cut the development time. Also, once the game goes gold, they'd have to lay off all these extra staff members. That's not a way to foster a loyal & cohesive workforce.

that's it. yearly released killed Assassins Creed and now Battlefield for me.. I really hate it. I still play BF3 don't get me wrong, but that's WHY I don't need a new one already! Give me some time to play these games confused.gif

In order to evolve and become greater, you have to change. You don't have to change completely, but just enough to feel fresh. I trust that Rockstar would know what to change and what not to.

One thing they've consistently done is made every one better. While I hope they don't take six years for the next one, I don't mind waiting for a new experience. What I WOULD like them to do is release regular DLC. I would have loved to explore the lives of other characters in lV. Well at least the ones that Niko didn't kill sigh.gif

Exactly this, well said. Housers said GTA is story telling. GTA needs to feel fresh because not everyone likes the continuation of one story. At the same time, bring over the classic GTA style to keep the balance.

So you are pretty much already bitching about the long wait for GTA _8_ when V hasn't even come out yet? Get a grip.

Some extraordinary movie directors might direct just 3 movies in 20+ years because the movies they make require meticulous planning and have lots and lots of thought and work put into em.

That said, I strongly believe that we'll see the next big installment in the series in less than 5 years because of the more developer-friendly architecture that next-gen machines are packing.

GTA IV and plenty of other games have kept me occupied before anything GTA V related began. It's only when the game is announced that the painful waiting begins.

Stanley Kubrick is probably the movie director that springs to mind when it comes to quality over quantity. 10 feature films in 40 years & almost every one of them is the best of its genre (especially Dr. Strangelove, 2001 & The Shining). If you want your project to be more than just a disposable product, you have to treat it as such. You can't rush art.

I do however believe GTA VI won't take 6 years to create, as some are fearing. I don't think they need to create an entirely new engine, just upgrade RAGE, keep Euphoria animation (which hasn't been bettered) & just utilize the power of next gen to improve on what they've already achieved.

The word is that the next gen consoles will be EASIER for developers to work on, which should equal quicker development times. They are practically PC's with specific hardware designed for gaming. The capabilities may even be more than will ever be needed for video games, as we are starting to see some amazing games coming on the still current gen platform.

They got a lot of competitors. It's not like the GTA Series is the only free-roam, open world game. Also add the fact that many think the GTA Series went downhill and sh*tty with IV. They need to attract more customers, not just fans. They also need casual gamers.

This change is actually good. Sure, at some point, it doesn't feel like GTA because there are too much changes. But they need those to attract gamers. And this is R* we're talking about. They got this biggrin.gif

So you guys actually believe that Rockstar – the Housers & The Benz + the army of dedicated Rockstar staffers – will make a GTA that on purpose doesn't feel like a GTA game? You are delusional.
