This is new to me, never expect japanese to like GTAs before, i thought they're into RPGs, online games and some other genre. Though there are some games that the western still enjoyed like Wangan Midnight, Initial D, Yakuza series, Tekken series, hell the GT series too

I know you weren't asking me but I know I'm excited for the new Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns that's coming out. I heard the game will have a World Map similar to past games. I just hope we are able to ride in some kind of vehicles around the map.

How many Japanese games are you hyped about?

A long time ago, I was interested in Final Fantasy Versus XIII, mainly because of the aesthetic of the game and its more serious, grounded nature than, say, the normal XIII games (which for some reason have been milked to all hell like Assassins Creed 2's storyline) and the promises of it being a more open-world-y type fantasy game, like the old-school Final Fantasy games back in the day. Well... it's pretty much vapor-ware now. Not cancelled apparently, but there's been no news on it since I don't even know how long. There was no guarantee that it would have lived up to expectations either. But I really liked the ideas behind it, despite not generally being much of a JRPG fan at all.

 

The Last Guardian also seems interesting, since both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were good games and it appears to be part of that same sort of... spiritual "franchise", but... that game is basically vaporware, too.

 

The state of Japanese gaming is nowhere near what it once was. It used to have a huge stranglehold on the videogame market, but no so much anymore. And some of its best series are becoming increasingly Westernized or even completely outsourced to Western developers (like Silent Hill, for instance), usually at a detriment to their quality (like Silent Hill, for instance), which kind of defeats the purpose, as well, while many fully Japanese series have stagnated. It's really a mess.

 

It's also really no surprise that a lot of people over there want something fresh.

Personally I dislike all the Japanese manga anime stuff. It's getting a bit old. They need to get with the times and start making more realistic facial features. It's like cartoon animations is all they know how to create.

Surely in their Japanese studios they can make graphics that simulate real life.

Even some big Japanese developers are saying it, that they need to get with the times when it comes to games. Look at the JRPG genre and how it barely evolved and/or improved. I agree with those developers. But Japan has their fair share of awesome games too, games like Shenmue all started there and boy was that game ahead of its time when it released. Japanese are good at other things though, sometimes evren much better than the USA. Especially when it comes to certain movies. I'd say Oldboy, but that one's not Japanese. But plenty of anime is awesome by them, great stories and very good.
