The only reason people would play CoD for longer than GTA V / GTA IV, (Any R* games) is the multiplayer. I do the occasional Blops 2, 's fun, but is it anywhere near the feel you get in a game like RDR? No.

COD has more replay value than GTA? Really, a rigidly linear, level based, short storyline, FPS has more replay value than a massive, open world, endless possibilities, sandbox game? Are you f*cking serious? I have played most COD games, and I always get thoroughly bored with them after a few months and then rarely play them again. COD has very little replay value imo. Even multiplayer becomes tediously boring after a while.

 

As for GTA? Well I still play all of them regularly. Today I was playing San Andreas, hitching a long line of tractors together and trying to drive them all to the top of Mt Chilliad without losing any (and failing miserably).

First of all, MW2 would never have ever have even had an installed base on consoles large enough to break the records it did without GTA IV selling a crapton of consoles.

 

Secondly, CoD may be very popular, but it is still a very niche game for the most part. Everyone and their mom plays GTA. it can seem that is the case for cod also, but it truly is not. It has a huge playerbase, but many of those players have been wishing a new GTA would come along.

 

The last GTA to come out sold an untold amount of consoles and broke all those records - before CoD MW2 did. Without GTA selling all those consoles and creating all those new console owners, MW2 would have had far less to sell to.

 

Now CoD has been yearly garnering more and more console sales, because that series has now become a system seller (which it was not until the massive popularity of week-one MW2, it was really still believed to be a PC game and the market was just beginning to realize FPS on consoles when MW2 came out - CoD4 had a strong run, but it was nothing compared to what happened after MW2 was released, and that's because until GTA IV came out, those consoles were sold way less)

 

Now, consider the growth of the industry since then, consider how tired and corny Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs, all that stuff is. Consider how absolutely bad call of duty has become (MW2 was the last truly good call of duty, but BO2 is actually ok save for a few maps that look more like gaylo maps than cod maps), consider how many new players there are since April 2008 (IV released). Consider how many more will be buying consoles just to play GTA V, and THEN discovering cod on consoles or whatever...

 

Yea man, GTA V is going to be the biggest release in entertainment of all time, again, as IV was, Call of Duty has enjoyed this title of biggest launch the past couple of years ONLY in the absence of new GTA games. Once GTA V hits, it will become the biggest selling title to ever hit 360 and Ps3, just as San Andreas is still the biggest title to ever hit PS2.

 

Trust me on this, CoD is a force, and as a PC gamer, it is a really good game and definitely did get (literally) 30x as much time (3000 hours in Mw2) as GTA IV got from me on the strength of its multiplayer, but time played is one thing, powerhouse sales and market penetration is another. GTA V will break the records CoD has been breaking.

 

I would also go as far as to say it does go both ways - Just as CoD would have never broken records for MW2 without GTA IV selling consoles throughout its one and a half years of support and DLCs, GTA V would certainly break its own record, but the records its about to set, could not be possible without the successes of MW2, BO, MW3, and BO2. Those games have certainly evolved into system sellers (beyond the usual "must have" status cod carries)

 

After selling that many consoles, to people who "would play on PC, but my friends have xbox, so I got MW3 on console this time" etc - GTA V is going to sell to ALL of those people. GTA IV fed the market new faces and expanded it to what it is today. Cod has sold a bit of consoles over the past couple of years now as well. Now GTA V is going to come in, sell even more consoles, and sell to everyone that already has them - trust me, you have never seen the type of numbers this game is going to do in pre-orders, let alone week one and year one

 

For the record, Multiplayer is not really an aspect when calculating replay value either/that's more of a single player thing. CoD has low replay value, you might play MW1, 2, and 3 through in a couple days waiting for CoD Ghosts, but you won't be 1/3 completed GTA IV in that time, not including the EFLC.

 

What cod does have, as I outlined earlier, is longevity of engagement (the multiplayer version of replay value). I don't think Rockstar is going to make a multiplayer that competes with Call of Duty. Every other game, yes, as IV already competes every other game, but CoD MP, nah. But that doesn't mean everyone and their mom won't be buying and playing GTA V They will

That's not true. Activision has their head up their butts and are not executing properly on iteration and instead trying to give cod a new face. In a perfect world, a yearly upgrade to cod would be great - for competitive gaming. If they just kept releasing DLC for MW2 to this day, that game would still not be stale. It's the way activision does it that stales it, it would be fine if they would stop trying to shut trolls up and cater to real FPS aficionados instead. But, as you said, profit > quality. So they make bad decisions. If IW was never defuncted, MW3 and the next cod would have been so much better. It all looks like low-quality spiderman/third person games now COMPARED to MW2.

The maps of COD provide a whole new fresh expereince with a new perspetive, while the GTA DLCs are just a rehash, same city and characters.
