Wheatley
So I decided to do a little stress test on this laptop I am typing on today. I installed Grand Theft Auto IV on it and it booted fine with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I decided to go download the latest patch which according to various websites is 1.0.7.0 and install it. However, I've ran into a little problem. The game will refuse to launch after the "Login to Rockstar Social Club" screen appears. Further inspection shows that LaunchGTAIV.exe appears in the task manager then suddenly disappears. I have no idea what's going on. It's the retail version by the way if anyone wants to know. Here is my specs: 4GB RAM AMD E-300 APU processor 1.3Ghz Dual Core Processor Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium AMD HD Radeon 6310 Graphics Card 2GB (although GTA IV says I only have 360 MB) It's a Compaq Presario CQ57 and I know some of you will say "Ha! No way will you be able to play that on those specs!" then how come the game booted just fine with no hiccups before the patch was installed? Also this laptop can run Skyrim just fine and a few other games pretty well which shocked me the first time installing those games. Any help would be appreciated. radioman
AMD HD Radeon 6310 Graphics Card 2GB (although GTA IV says I only have 360 MB) The 360MB is the Dedicated vram(which is what games use) and the 2GB is TOTAL VRAM(that vram is SHARED with the System Ram)...Games do not recognize the rest of the vram(just the Dedicated amount). Also, your processor is a lower power one, and below minimum for the game, as the minimum for AMD Dual cores is: 2.4GHZ according to the box the game comes in. Since the latest patch uses more resources than the earlier ones, it is preventing the game from running on your system since it is below minimum for the processor and border line for the Video card(performance wise). So, your only option is to do an un-install and re-install and use an earlier patch(preferably not above Patch 4, since you have a low end processor)... You cannot really compare IV to other games, as it is more processor intensive than most games and is poorly optimized, as compared to previous PC GTA's. Plus, since you are on a laptop it makes things worse, since laptop Processors and Video cards are lower-power than their Desktop counterparts. Wheatley
Fixed it by installing the latest GFWL update, running at Medium to Low settings with about 40-50 FPS! I'm quite surprised actually looking at the specs of this laptop. There is a bit of stutter here and there but other than that it runs pretty well for a £275 laptop. Thanks for the help though, I'll note down you information and keep it on hand near my desk for future reference. -Wheatley
