Current gen vs. Next gen

We all know that Rockstar have confirmed GTA V releasing on current gen consoles, but to keep up sales they're obviously going to have to release it on next gen sooner or later. Looking at the graphics, it has the potential to be beautiful on next gen consoles. I want to buy it when it comes out for current gen and play it on both consoles.

There are rumours floating about that you can't play 360 games on the next XBOX and all, so how are we going to be able to play V on next gen consoles without losing game progress and of course, money? Will there be some way to overcome this? Because, next gen consoles aren't going to release much longer after the release of GTA V.

Play it on current gen and then start all over on new gen in a year or so.. sorted. icon14.gif

Even if you could use the Xbox version in the new Xbox you'd have to buy the new one if you wanted the updated graphics.

bowling...?

Just replay the game and experience the HBO series-like story again. If you like getting 100% multiple times then you can do that too.

I wouldn't hold out for a next gen re-release that could very well not come out.

Disagree. By the time R* "need" to have a game that's next gen they will have a completely new game out. For at least two years after next gen consoles release the fan base will be considerably small. Perhaps even longer and around that time the big game names will jump ship at will the costumers. Then and only then will be the right time for R* to release a game as the costumer base will be big enough to warrant spending all that cash making a game and to make a profit. What better way to do that than making a new engine and a completely new game such as Red Dead Redemption 2 perhaps. If you think R* will spend the time and money building GTA V for next gen consoles you're sadly mistaken. A port might happen at best and that would just be like Bully was when it was ported to the 360. Hardly worth the time nor effort.

If there will be a next-gen version, a PC Version would be released even later because R* always makes it like this:

Console First, PC after.

So a next-gen release would be even worse for PC players.

I would buy current and next version id the next gen version has some huge improvments

Think of GTA V as the icing on the current-gen cake, the final sendoff to what has been a pretty damn impressive generation of gaming. I do not believe it is worth their time and effort to focus on making a next-gen GTA V when they could be spending said time and energy making an entirely new next-gen game, such as another Red Dead.

I would say they wont port it to any other system. no next gen, no PC.

The reason is that Next Gen consoles are on its way and they rather want to start to develop for next gens than having to port old gen versions to other systems for like half a year or even longer while other studios already are developing for next gen for like 1-2 years

but who knows

Good point. I can't remember when sales picked up when the PS3 and 360 released, so it's hard to know which way to look at things. But because it comes out so close to next gen, I'm not sure what's going to happen. If what Rockstar says is true, maybe a year isn't long enough to get everything out of the game. For sure, it can be completed 100% in a matter of months, but I still enjoy playing GTA 4 multiplayer thereafter when I've nothing better to do. I don't want to be switching between two consoles.

I want it to have the long-lasting effect on me that GTA 4 still does, if it's going to be four or five times the game that GTA 4 was.

They don't have to. GTAV releases in September and the next-generations consoles arrive the market after the release of the game. They only arrive the market but nobody will own them yet. It will take years until the console base is big and profitable for bigger games. There are a lot of factors that have to be considered if we're talking about how fast the base will grow but I think it's a given that it won't be as fast as the last time so when Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were released in November 2005 and November 2006, respectively. Back then, HDTV became more and more important and the release of the then new consoles couldn't have been a better time. The difference between HDTV and the older standards was big but you cannot say the same thing about HDTV in 2005/2006 and HDTV or 3DTV today. So yeah, the console base won't grow as fast this time, it will most likely take a longer time to achieve a certain amount of users on the new platforms. That makes it even more pointless to release GTAV for the next-gen consoles. Rockstar would release a new game that is developed specifically for the new platforms and that actually use the capabilities of it, rather than release a videogame from the past console generation for the new consoles that is barely owned by anyone yet.

If there will be a next-gen version, a PC Version would be released even later.

Well, I disagree. PlayStation 4 and NextBox are based on the x86-architecture, if you know anything about PC's then you know that they are based on the same architecture. It doesn't make sense to push the PC version back even further because of a next-gen version, that is if there is one at all which I doubt to be honest.

San Andreas is still going strong to this day. I believe GTA V has the potential to surpass that. It really doesn't matter when next gen consoles come out as most the time there launch games are nothing to get hot and bothered about and most customers don't jump ship. As Sony have said themselves the PS3 at least still has a lot of life left in it and that much is proved true with all the great games coming out. I'd imagine the 360 will be the same.

Personally I'm waiting for a next gen console myself. From the PS1 days I bought a new console on day one. I won't be doing the same with the PS4. The price and lack of games is the main reasons plus there is a chance a slim version will be out a year or two after launch. With so many great games coming out on current gen consoles and next gen I'm content with my 360 and PS3. I'd imagine a lot of other people will feel the same way. I'll buy a PS4 at some point though just not right away.

No a PC version will be next in line in anything as again the consumer base is larger. I really don't get what these next gen folk are thinking. It's like they think current gen consoles and PCs around the world just implode once next gen consoles come out. Although that would be neat to see it won't happen. tounge.gif

Because sales on next gen will make them a tonne of money from people who buy next gen immediately and then the people who purchased it on PS3 when they upgrade. Anyone who thinks this game wont eventually release on next gen is naive and has no business brain.

Next gen means they will keep making profits from GTAV way way into the future..

Once it has been announced on PC you can be sure it will be released on next gen, You just need patience. Personally I will be buying it for PS3 but will upgrade to next gen in a year or 2.. after all the problems that come along with a new console are sorted.

IF they decide to release a next gen version, which is eventually likely, it wont be for some time. I would say at least 6 months away from release. I think at that point we would all not mind replaying V from the start 6 months out

If anything, they might lose or break even with a next-gen release. We're looking at 150 million current-gen consoles out right now vs 5-10 million next gen consoles a month after they release.

Next gen would boost sales only after there is a substantial consumer base. But as a release title there is no way they will make the same profit as with current gen.

I don't agree with this for the reasons I've said above. GTA V will sell and continue to sell no matter the platform it's on. Just look at San Andreas. It wouldn't make much business seance at all to spend time, money and resources on putting a game out on next gen consoles just to please a small handful of people. It would be much better to wait until the market is big enough and then bring out a completely new game for the systems. This game been announced for PC also doesn't mean it'll be on next gen consoles.

With that said at best R* might port the game to next gen consoles but that to me wouldn't be worth the time or effort never mind waiting for next gen console release to buy it. As I said before look at Bully to see what I mean about ports. Personally if anything at all I just see GTA V been put up on PSN/Marketplace for next gen console owners to download it digitally. Nothing changed at all in the game. Much like Vice City, GTA 3 and I think San Andreas have been put up for download recently.

Well i cant see them making it next gen at all wasn't san andres released at the end of the PS2's life cycle OCT 2004 if i remember correctly and ps3 was announced at E3 a year later and san andreas wasn't released next gen.

I think they will just make a complete new game for next gen

Very few people who arent trolling seem to agree with that.

If you dont believe it will release on PC then fine I can see a persons reasoning for it not being next gen.

I see it being released on the PC which makes Next Gen release pretty much a given, It wont take hundreds of millions or extreme amounts of time to hop from developing for PC to next gen.

I dont expect it will be released anytime soon on next gen but a year or 2 after current gen release should not be unexpected.

For me I will be purchasing it on the PS3 regardless. icon14.gif

If R* wants to milk it and make the max amount of profit possible, they'll follow up with a next gen release about a year after the current gen release. They'd be stupid to release the next gen version before the current gen version has sold through as much as possible.

I don't think there's a good reason for them *not* to release a next gen version later. It's not as if they've never done such a thing in the past.

Your logic is flawed.

Please give explanations for your inference regarding the late PC version if the next gen console versions exist.

Anyway, I don't think there will be a next gen version. Not sure why people think otherwise or anticipate it.

You think i'm trolling because I gave my opinion on a popular topic? Yeah, nice try.

Just think about it, GTA V is such a highly anticipated game. How many gamers are going to sit out on the game and wait until it comes out onto the next generation of consoles? VERY few...If any. Besides, there is no promise that the next gen port would even be any better. The game is being DESIGNED for current gen, it's pushing the PS3/360 to their limits. Simply porting it over to a more powerful system doesn't mean it will be that much better....Certainly not so much greater that it would make anyone want to hold out on a brand new Grand Theft Auto game. I can't imagine that a die-hard GTA fan would be willing to do that.

I think the market alone would prevent R* from porting the game over. The vast majority of people who would buy the game for next gen would be those who discover the game AFTER they've already gotten a new system, or people who feel the need to repurchase the game for the new consoles.

Again, I don't think it would be very logical, or resourceful for Rockstar to port the game to the next gen consoles.

From the looks of it I'm not even going to bother with the new xbox with it's always online, always social crap so backwards compatibility isn't a concern. Whether the piece of cheap plastic sh*t will hold until I'm done with V is. Not fanboying. I don't own a playstation and don't really game on my pc. Just really disappointed with the overall (lack of) quality of the 360 and everything I read about the new one makes me think it's not for me but designed for the kind of people that only live in Mac Donalds, Microsoft and Disney commercials.

I may get a ps4 or may just give it a miss entirely if it's like that too. I just want to play a game like GTA or Bioshock on the weekend and NOT be social, NOT share and get commercials shoved in my face like buy more sh*t and be more like these happy f*ckwits.

We'll see then ... you think they would be starting new projects when their $200+ million title is in a tight schedule? I think you're the one not knowing how this world works.

"Ok guys so we spent a fortune almost 3 times bigger then we did with GTAIV, the game have issues and we have less then half year to release it, so let's start recruiting new programmers to start working in a Next Gen project".

Ya sounds right... rolleyes.gif
