I think GTA V handles this perfect. You have a wanted area, BUT you can hide from the cops still when you are in that area and then try to find a way out. That makes it much more believable and fun.

Is that a typo? Because it seems to me this is pretty much how GTA IV works.

There is a difference because in GTA IV the cops seem to automatically know where you are when you are in the wanted area. Hiding is impossible.

I hear people say this all the time, but it simply isn't true.

In GTA IV, when you're in the cops line of sight, when they can actually see you, your wanted stars are lit up bright white. When you break the line of sight, the stars go gray. For a while, the cops do still know where you are, or at least where to go to find you. But if you stay out of their sight for a bit, they will eventually switch from "There he is! Get him!" mode to "Where is he? Find him." mode, where they start sort of randomly scouring the area looking for you. But they don't know exactly where to look and if you are careful to stay out of their line of site you can easily make your way out of the wanted area.

I think what happens a lot is that it SEEMS like a searching cop knows exactly where you are, because he's making a bee-line straight for you... so a lot of people panic when he gets close and pop out and shoot him, starting a fire fight and going right back into "There he is!" mode. What I've found is that often the searching cop will come right up on top of you, but then turn around at the last second and go back the other way.

Is Pay N Spray confirmed? I mean, we have car customisation now, which you can obviously change the color of your car, so I guess Pay N Spray doesn't fit anymore.

Yeah, in CVG or Kotaku's preview they said Pay 'N Spray doubles as the customs garage now.

Definitely, without a doubt, the wanted area. It was a massive improvement in GTA IV to the pay'n'spray option in the earlier games. That was one of the reasons shootouts with cops in GTA IV was so much fun.

With the old system, outside of missions I never particularly enjoyed fighting cops. Always found it really annoying trying to outrun them at 3 stars above.

...As long as there's always a way to get rid of wanted level and its easily accessed i don't really care! And since we all know by now, that hiding/covering will let us lose heat - it shouldn't be a problem! But if lets imagine for a sec. we wouldn't have such an option and we had rather choose between these two i'd go with Pay'N'Spray, but only in case if they're really frequent and not like 4-5 shops on the entire state! (San Andreas i'm looking at you!)...i have terrible experience with like you've said "area-on-map" kind of system since i've played Driver NYC and it was freaking annoying! cops just wouldn't leave you alone, once you get wanted you're pretty much screwed! no even room or time to pick some fresh air or eat a hotdog between the chases!

Hiding was impossible in the form that the only way to lose a wanted level was to leave the wanted area, but the cops never automatically knew where you were. You could easily be spotted by the helicopters, though, but otherwise you could use your surroundings to make a getaway (tunnels, alleyways, side streets, subways etc.).

Wanted area, because like you even said, you can use the pay n spray the same way, and wanted area gives a more realistic feel.

Being wanted in the III era was repetitive and eventually boring. It wasnt even close to being realistic.
