YouTube is close to launching

YouTube has been making its own space on multiple entertainment services for a while, but according to a report from the Financial Times, it's now on the cusp of revealing its own subscription services for some of its specialist video channels. Rumored for several months, according to the FT's unnamed sources it will include up to 50 different channels, with subscription pricing starting at "as little as $1.99 a month." Google has already followed up, saying it had nothing to announce just yet, but that it was investigating "a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube."

Hope that things that interesting me won't be affected. But if situation become too bad, some other website with videos will rise up,like Daily Motion or Liveleak.

I get that it's expensive to keep a site like YouTube up on the internet, but all of this "paid subscription" sh*t that's everywhere these days is getting me nauseous.

By the sound of that, I hope they don't mean that we will have to pay to subscribe to someone who is really famous on YouTube, that would totally suck ass.

Paying to subscribe? I'd rather make a bookmark on my browser than pay real money to subscribe to channels.

I'm only surprised that it took them this long. Come on, we all saw this coming from a mile away. It was the next logical step.

well there is a way around it. using the search option wisely. Not as convenient as having it on your feed by way of subscription though, but the option is there. So if charges are made for subscriptions then unsubscribe or don't subscribe (whatever the case may be) and use search. Or a bookmark

@Vanja I actually was always hesitant on subscribing to channels back when i was younger cos I knew it would happen, and was wary that it could jsut happen suddenly

The joke might also fall onto the people that go with paid subscriptions for their channels. You just know people will download those videos (with some sort of third-party source) and host them on a free-to-watch channel.

I don't get why people couldn't sit through 8 seconds of adverts.

I've only just started to use YouTube like a TV so this is mildly disappointing. However, I don't watch TV really, only TV series. I have zero tolerance for ads and junk TV. I'm only trying to expose myself the best quality TV, like HBO stuff.

YouTube has been improving heaps, lately. New search filters and the beta menu on the left is handy.

It's just going to be subscriptions to some of their beloved partner channels, rest of the tube will(for now) stay untouched.

It will be a bad move though - nobody will pay money to watch and those partners would lose tons of views they have now.

There already is a bunch of rage over those sh*tty one channel thing channels, something like this would kill their parnerthing programs.

8 seconds? I was getting at least 30 seconds. Which is fine the first time but when I'm going through a few songs at a time and there are ads on every single one, my teeth start to grind. I have no patience when it comes to computers. I only really use YouTube for music, but I couldn't give two sh*ts if AdBlock left some uploaders out of pocket. You want money, get a real job.

I had a few 30 second ads, but 90% I could skip, my problem with people blocking them is youtube doesn't make as much money, they're going to try re-cooperate it elsewhere. Who cares about the uploaders.

Also I'd like to know why making videos for Youtube isn't a real "Job". And before you ask, no I have never uploaded to youtube.

People don't really like adverts. And if they can avoid them, they will. I use Ad Blocker because I don't want to see ads. I'm annoyed by them. If I wanted to see ads I'd watch television. Remember television? It's that thing that used to be popular before the internet. I understand that ads make money for youtubers, but they are too intrusive and so f*ckin' annoying they make me want to punch kittens. Think of the kittens.

I'm thinking of the kittens. I couldn't care less about what YouTube does and doesn't do - it's their business after all and now that they are linked with Google, they will want to make cash. It's just what the entertainment industry do best. The internet is literally taking over the entertainment industry and it's gone too long now. YouTube needs and will make money through us, the viewers. Yes, they tried using advertisement but they are stupid enough not to know people can bypass the system.Good on them as they deserve the money they rightly deserve. The whole industry isn't about the passion anymore, it's the dollar signs on their pay-checks.

Sometimes it's 5 seconds, sometimes 15 seconds for ads when I go on YT.

Yeah, they're f*ckin' annoying.

I always loose the mood of watching muscle babe workout videos if I get interjected by an ad starring a topless asian dude at the beginning.

f*cking filibusters. I also hate using eCondoms to block them.

I'd just like to remind everyone that blip.tv and dailymotion are options. Youtube has been awful for at least two years now, and if people just stopped hosting their stuff there maybe youtube would realize it.

In what universe were those ads EVER 8 seconds? The shortest Ad I had EVER got, was around 1:20. In most cases, Longer than the video I wanted to watch!!

That 'll happen eventually. As soon as Google starts making people pay to watch/subscrive/or anything the people 'll eventually search another site for their videos. It 'll be sad to see a site as Youtube go, but meh, it's Google's own fault.

In my universe bro, almost every single advert I get has a skip after 5 seconds option, the longest ones are only 30 seconds.

@Lzw3, I think you misread, there will only be about 50 channels with the subscription fee.

I always hated the ads, especially ones which don't allow you to skip which are becoming more common. However, I've always put up with them because I know there are many people who literally make a living by providing entertainment for me when I get bored. To many people, producing videos to upload online is a trivial activity, but it is certainly an expensive hobby and those who do produce quality content have every right to place ads galore on their videos; I'm fine with that. To me the ads are a small inconvenience for the substantial content I get in return.

When I have to pay, out of my own pocket, for that content is where the line is crossed however. YouTube has always been the one to rely on for fast and convenient viewing whenever you want it. I shouldn't have to subscribe for some weekly vlog or gameplay commentary, or short home made film. There are other services available for those who want to fund projects.

The very reason YouTube is so great and successful is because we don't have that, unlike Netflix and the like. The internet used to be the place for freedom, and now everything regarding finance is online from banking to video streaming, and even online news. Considering how big Google is, and how much traffic YouTube recieves on a daily basis, I find it hard to believe that Ad revenue is not sufficient to maintain the service. Those with ad-block probably account for less than 40% of that traffic.

I find it ridiculous they're considering such a thing, turning YouTube into all the other bullsh*t, hassling subscription services we're now surrounded by. As much as I want to support quality YouTube producers, this is a step in the wrong direction as far as I'm concerned. I made my peace with the Ads. If I want subscription cat videos entertainment I'll buy a f*cking Sky box.

Lol I take it you missed my topic about the 20minute odd advert Ihad to watch before I could see the video. Thankfully it was one I was interested in. I would be willing to pay for extra features on my channel. But I wouldn't pay just to subscribe to someones channel f*ck that!

Don't see what everyone is whinning about, it's not like all channels will be subscription and I am sure it would be up to the content provider as well.

Regarding Ad-Block, I used to have it, then all my favourite Youtubers (fairly small ones) said they weren't getting paid if you used Ad-Block, so I took it off to support them because a lot of them are great people trying to make a living, but now I'm using the internet a lot less and not watching too much Youtube, I put ad-block back on because quite frankly ads are annoying as hell.

As for paid subscriptions, I heard it's only for the really premium content, so if you pay, I dunno, a couple quid a month for a channel you really like, then you're probably gonna get the best content available. It's sad Youtube is going down this road though and I imagine there will be a big outrage about this. Just as long as they aren't forcing it on you, it's all good. I swear to god if they start recommending me channels to pay money for -.-
