Someone gave him GTA 3, which I had heard about and new was the hot new game but I did't give a crap about it. I was a hardcore gamer, but for me it was all about fantasy, whether it was sci-fi, swords & sorcery, supernatural/horror, whatever. Some game where you're Joe Schmoe driving around a modern city just seemed so mundane and pointless. So that night we watched him play it for a while, we were all drunk, it was pretty funny watching him cause all this random mayhem and go on cop killing sprees and blow away innocent bystanders and do pretty much whatever he wanted. Then the guy who gave it to him said "Oh hey check this out, go over to that chick standing there and honk the horn..." and he proceeded to tutor him on how you could hire a whore and then beat her to death afterwards to get your money back. I wasn't personally offended per se, but I think it was a stupid thing for a developer to put into their game. For 20 years there had been these lame "concerned parent" groups who were always whining about how supposedly video games were these horrible brainwashing devices that erode the moral compass and teach people to kill. My stance was "Those idiots have always been completely full of sh*t with no leg to stand on, and here you are giving it to them on a silver platter. This will basically make them correct, retro actively." I was pretty turned off and even less interested in playing GTA than I already was. But that was a long time ago. Eventually I couldn't stay away from GTA anymore just because it's a fantastic game. Sure enough the media controversy went into full effect soon after that. But it only lasted a few years. It came and went. After the stupid Hot Coffee bullsh*t, it seems like we're good. I see no reason to get your tit in a wringer about it these days. I remember when Rockstar released a GTA IV screenshot where a prostitute was lying on Niko Bellics apartment bed from Alderny - wasn't possible in the final game, that's why Rockstar might be more careful what screens they release prior to the games release rather than just giving us screens, showing stuff that isn't possible to do in the final game.
