RockStarNiko
I know there are the usual estimates of somewhere between 20 and 30 sq m, with some people thinking it will be smaller than we think However, I just been wondering about the "3.5 the size of Red Dead, 5x the size if include water" Using RDR as a comparison is very vague because you have the total map area including non playable areas and then total playable area Total map area of RDR is approximately 12 sq m, total playable area is 6 sq m So conservative estimate of GTA V we get 21 sq m total land area and 30 sq m total map area if include the water But what if they actually meant the total area, 12 sq m We would then get 42 sq m total land area and 60 sq m if include the water What made me wonder is I have just started playing Far Cry 3 and the map seems to very large, not sure how large. We have also had Just Cause 2 and other large games since we had GTA IV. To have 42 sq m might seem a lot but it is only an extra mile in each direction. 5x6 for 30 sq m 6x7 for 42 sq m I don't see why that extra mile each way would be technically beyond RockStar, especially when the extra mile will most likely be countryside, which is easier to do than urban city. When RockStar say 3.5x the size of RDR, you would think they are referring to the total map, right? Also 3.5 is very specific, they don't say 3 or 4 but 3 point 5 so this must mean they have measured quite accurately.

killahmatic
"Do you think it is possible that GTA V is bigger than we are expecting" There is absolutely no way to answer that. Everyone has a different idea of how big they think it is. Some think its hardly bigger than IV, some think its the largest map of any game ever, and the majority of us are somewhere in between. Many will be wrong on how big they thought it was, and a few will be right.
The Made Man
I know this is a noob question and off topic. But is RDR map really bigger than GTA SA map? Or is GTA SA bigger? I always wondered this...I know RDR only had horses, but still...

impo
well, it wont be the largest map of any game ever since there is already tes daggerfall with map equal to the real size of Great Britain ( 487,000 square kilometers/ 188,000 sq miles) however its still pretty huge

I always wondered this...I know RDR only had horses, but still... About the same size.. or slightly smaller than SA (13.6 sq miles). Maybe even slightly bigger. Who knows. But it's never the double size (28 sq miles).. it's not that big. Yeah, I also think that the map might be way larger than expected. But I don't want to get my hopes up.. hopefully it will be a perfect size. Not too small and not too big.
richard1997jones
SA was big but not big enough I felt as though wherever I went I was still in view of the city from the country side.

gtamann123
los angeles downtown is smaller than NYC downtown in real life anyway Exactly. And I don't get why people don't realize that. LA has far less skyscrapers than NYC. I think the downtown LS we have been shown so far is good enough because its scaled correctly.
golf wang
When they said downtown Los Santos is smaller than downtown LC it gave me the creeps. But seeing this. Who knows. GTAMaster666
Everyone forgets the land mass of LA is bigger then New York in land mass i felt RDR was small amd SA was to close together GTA V is all about LS and the modern era of it SA was back in 92 era and in the 3D era this is the here and now ppl! ChocoFrosty
RDR map is 28sq mi (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UlPyKXeNwbc/UKFcvg-xmlI/AAAAAAAAAWY/Wbej2IXDYrg/s1600/maps+part+2.jpg) 5x 28= 140sq mi for GTAV. Nope. Just nope. That is astonishingly inaccurate. RDR is nowhere NEAR 28sq mi. That would mean RDR is substantially bigger than SA.
GlitzyTomb
San Andreas felt bloody huge to me. If GTAV feels twice the size of San Andreas (as it's purportedly 3 times as big) I'll be bloody well happy. Just tearing arse through the streets on a nice Double T or perhaps getting a quick tour of the world in a plane. Perhaps an epic bike ride
ChronoStinger
...I'm not a minimalist (its quite opposite actually...), so its very hard for me to be surprised with something, which is more than i expected!...however in this particular case i shall admit i'm simply satisfied with the land size (nor less nor more...)! However i'm well aware there are people, who'd disagree with me...
73duster
1-Rockstar has repeatedly stated that they don't want to reveal too much. 2-Rockstar has repeatedly shown the same areas, but from different angles. 3-Rockstar has given SPECIFIC estimates of the map size by using RDR, San Andreas and GTAIV as comparisons. Taking these FACTS into account, here is my prediction: Rockstar is DEFINATELY holding back a substantial amount of stuff, including the map. This is why we have seen tons of screenshots, but they are ALL based on a couple of specific areas. The city of Los Santos, as well as a large countryside and mountain region. When reviewing the numerous screenshots, we can pretty much get an idea of how the city of LS will be laid out. Then there is the vast mountain and countryside regions which contain the satellite dishes, windfarm and ocean. There are a couple of quick glimpses of Sandy Shores in Trevor's video, streets in the rundown areas of LS in Franklin's video, and a quick shot of the amusement pier in Michael's video. When you carefully look at all of these screens and videos, They CANNOT possibly add up to either 3.5 times Red Dead Redemption's map, OR RDR, San Andreas and GTAIV's maps combined. This does NOT even take into account the addition of ocean space, which Rockstar said would make it 5 times RDR's map! I do NOT believe Rockstar would make such specific statements in regards to the map size, only to put themselves in a position to disappoint everyone by getting their expectations so high. I believe they are UNDERESTIMATING this game, and definitely holding back on the map. While RDR's map isn't HUGE, it isn't tiny either. GTAIV's Liberty city is underrated, and upon replaying it, I've come to realize that it's quite DENSE, and full of places I completely forgot about. San Andreas is quite large, even by today's standards. There is NO way, that all of what we've seen in the screens and videos adds up to these 3 maps. THIS, combined with the fact that Rockstar doesn't want to reveal everything, tells me that there HAS to be major areas we haven't, and hopefully WILL NOT see until the game is in our hands. Rockstar is not going to shoot themselves in the foot by hyping up the map size, only to have everyone's expectations so high that they can't meet those expectations. Whatever they are saying, you can bet it's not everything. Edited May 9, 2013 by 73duster

I love the fact that R* is holding back, because it tells me there is so much more for us to discover ourselves. I agree on this. Other than Trailer 1, the only places where R* took their screens to date are areas that the 3 protags are likely to be familiar with. For all we know there is a ton of country side left to explore when the game comes out. For example, when R* previewed their game with Franklin on the top of the helicopter , its likely that from left to right is actually North to South, the South end being the Los Santos skyscrapers that the previewers could barely make out and the Alamo Sea all the way to the left. But it's never implied how large the map is from West to East, so that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. My money's on the map being insanely large. For all we know Downtown LS could be bigger than we thought it could be despite the screenshots. It's Rockstar after all, they're pretty experienced in this stuff.
