Aliasing: Just the Fact of Life for 720p Displays

Well my TV is Full HD and capable of displaying 1080p. GTAIV is one of the games on PS3 that can upscale to 1080p (not all PS3 games can do this). Does this mean that, providing V is the same, this wont be a problem for me?

Sorry if you are already aware of this, but the PS3 does not render games at 1080p, they are all being rendered at 720p (Not all, like COD is rendered at a lower resolution).

@iNero

Definitely right.

Ok, I don't know too much about this tbh, but on the back of some PS3 game cases there is a box that shows the resolution(s). Most just say 720p but some including GTAIV, Assassins Creed, Skate etc to name a few show 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Why would they include all 3 if the PS3 is only capable of displaying in 720p?

GTA IV PS3 version runs 640p. PS3 stretches the frames to 720p, 1080i or 1080p depending on your TV resolution.

Yup. But V won't be 640p this time. It's most definitely going to be 720p and you can upscale it to 1080p.

how do you know they wont make it again?

they made it in GTA4 and RDR. so why not again?

Im not worried. Xbox had 720p everytime

Max Payne 3 is 720p on ps3.

and it isnt open world.

It has more detail than GTA V, because of the file sizes of the audio files and graphics. Don't think you know everything. If you don't like the graphics, join the PC crew in the eternity of wait for this holy game.

You dont even get the further sense...

An Open Worlg Game need way more ressources than a linear shooter...

I know that. But MP3 isn't a regular linear shooter like any other shooter games, look at the insane level of detail. Btw, i meant compared to IV, not V. V will have 720p on the PS3, the hardware is more than capable. Now shutup.

lol. you mad?

you can tell me that on sept 17th

The only one mad here is you. Bascially every game runs at 720p on PS3. The fact IV and RDR didn't was the lack of knowledge R* had of the PS3 hardware. MP3 proved they clearly can optimize a game on the PS3. There is absolutely zero reason they will go back to 640p now. They even show the PS3 version to the press, they do that for a reason.

I agree, the game won't be 640p, and no, RDR was 720p.

iNero it seems as if you don't know what you're talking about.

R* now has more knowledge about the CELL's SPE's and how to utilize for the RSX GPU, by reading your previous posts, you're making yourself look like a Xbot fantoy.

See all those pixel jaggies on all that high detail goodness in the mid clip? Yea, you see it, see those cranes? See how their legs go "black/white/black/white" - yea, those aren't multicolored up close lol. When the camera moves, those are going to look like they are spinning and static objects are going to be jumpy and spinner-looking all over the map at console resolution.

Screenshot looks great, but in motion, that is going to be a mess of pixel-fighting and super ugly. It's going to be ever-present jaggie-land.

This game will be unplayable for me at 720p. I will pass this game until I can play it at higher than that resolution.

You?

True, but same goes for almost every other game of past years. Before you had these post-FX antialising solutions like FXAA there was a while you had NO anti aliasing on games like Mass Effect 2.

I can handle it. Like your topic says, fact of life. When it comes to graphic imperfections I'm more bothered by LOD popping and low res shadows that flicker all over the foreground, like in AC3.

I think a lot of kids think that technology in general has always been high tech I mean we've had iphones for 50 years havn't we. Full HD has been around since Fred Flinstones' time and cars were driven by cavemen. Any kids heard of a game called Pong? then we upgrade to Space Invaders. We didn't start with Playstation's and Xbox's, nor Snes's or Nes's or HD or COLOUR TV or *gasp* even the internet hasn't been around forever. Spoiled the lot of ya. If you don't like it PISS OFF. Actually I'm really glad that certain people find stuff to moan about because you won't enjoy it as much. To people that understand and have seen the progress with tech we know this game is pretty sh*t hot, and thats an understatement, and will look fine (pretty damn good!) no matter what screen (within non twat'ish reason) it is played on.

A few sources have said that it doesn't look exactly like the trailers. OPM said they think the trailers have been made to look a bit better while ingame it doesn't look as incredible, but it still looks fantastic is what they said. But the game isn't even out yet, who knows how the final game looks. One thing i do know...the trailers for GTA IV, RDR and MP3 were all how the final build eventually looked. And even if it's NOT exactly like the trailers, it's still a huge step up from GTA IV and quite up there with RDR and MP3....and well....sh*t...if that's the case, how could we ever complain?

Answer: We can't!

This topic confirms one thing to me and that is these screens are indeed taken from the PS3 version of the game. What I mean is if it was from a PC or shopped in anyway everything would look smoother and that would have me a bit worried about the console versions. Thank you OP for putting my mind to rest. Looking forward to playing this on the PS3 as the screens look great.

Yeah i see what you mean. It's going to look fine, Rockstar has yet to miserable fail at anything in their games, and it certainly won't be with their 'Baby' GTA and i doubt it will ever happen actually. Rockstar brings top quality. I just keep wondering a bit about the 360 version. Kinda hoping that the Xbox 360 magazine next week will actually talk about that version, but if not...i'd just find that a bit odd. Why can't they simply show the version for the magazine or site that is solely about one platform? Probablly worried about nothing, but GTA is by far my fav franchise in gaming and 360 is by far my console of choice, so far no multiplatform titles have been bad on the 360, but still. Does anyone know on what plaform Max Payne 3 was demo'ed to the press in 2011 and 2012?

It's a console game. GTA V will be running on very outdated hardware. Rockstar is a great developer and will do what they can to make things look as good as possible. I don't know what we are supposed to discuss. Console hardware wont change no matter what. San Andreas had worse Graphics than GTA 3 (it looked far more jaggy on console) it it had much, much, more content than any GTA game at that date.

What I do hope they get rid off is this horrible, blue-tinted blur to hide the jaggies because it makes the screen rather grainy and distant objects very blurry. Just compare GTA IV and TBoGT.

Meh, it will look fine when in motion.

This is all that matters, and is correct.

You are actually right.

"This entails a full 720p resolution on Xbox 360 along with 2x multi-sampling anti-aliasing. PlayStation 3 on the other hand renders at a significantly lower resolution: 1152x640, with a very selective implementation of the blur-inducing quincunx anti-aliasing."

It's the Alan Wake thing all over again. Someone throws a massive crybaby hissy fit because a pylon looks like it's in a computer game and not really made of metal.
