winme05
Recently, I ran into this whole UEFI stuff. At the first glance, seems like a great replacement for BIOS, but I still gotta few things not clear about these. - WinXP can't run on UEFI, right? If so, is there a workaround, or any mobo, that would at least simulate BIOS or something like that? - The interface. From what I can understand, the UEFI developers focus on that all flashy poppy eyecandy interface, which I can't stand. Have I been cheking too small amount of resources, or are there really no UEFI boards with that good old DOS-looking UI? Made me feel like a hacker. - Will it really beat out BIOS? I've got a feeling it's going to be a short time one, as the BTX form factor did.
Ryan
UEFI and BIOS are basically two different terms for the same thing, as both control the basic settings of your system. BIOS has been around for quite some time. It is farily basic with no GUI and only allows you to use your keyboard to change things. UEFI is essentially the new replacement for the BIOS. It does all the same things as the BIOS and includes a GUI and allows uses to use both the keyboard and mouse. Your operating system is completely independent from the UEFI or BIOS therefore it shouldn't matter what operating system you're using. As for the looks of UEFI's, they vary by manufacturer, but I highly doubt you're going to find a DOS looking UEFI. The whole point of UEFI is the introduction of a GUI. Making it look like DOS defeats the purpose. I don't see why it is such a big deal anyway, seeing as how little one would actually use a UEFI. As for UEFI vs BIOS, of course it will beat it. It looks better and is more user friendly with the GUI, and allows people to use a mouse.
winme05
Wait, are they really the same? As far as I understand from Wikipedia, UEFI is a totally different technology, which not only has that flashy GUI, but also makes bootups faster, and has better access to all the hardware. Stinky12
I remember reading UEFI isn't a replacment to the bios, but a additional layer on top of the bios. The bios will always be there as its the foundation to a motherboard, much like the steel beams which is a foundation to a building. Certain motherboards will let you either do UEFI boot or just standard boot. UEFI is needed if you're planning to boot from a 3TB HDD.
