splintercell4eva
Let me preface this by saying that I love the new previews and I honestly think that GTA V sounds like the best game ever. I'm not exaggerating my opinion at all here. I feel as though Rockstar has reached a pinnacle of gaming greatness and that GTA V will be one for the history books. Now on to my question: The demo that all the reporters saw was the same demo. Beginning with Franklin free falling and then parachuting the rest of the way to safety to a breathtaking & majestic forest. No one actually mentioned what the freefall/parachute mechanic was like. Which kind of bothers me because I want to hear whether or not it's better than TBoGT skydiving because in my opinion that just looked kinda tacked on and dumb. I just hope that they did an overhaul on it this time around. Am I the only one curious about this?
pariah87
Wouldn't make it or break it for me to be honest. I'd be happy with the parachuting the same. Maybe some more movement when diving instead of the just straight down option. Not something I did a lot anyways.

jamieleng
I'm not sure what more they could do. I mean, you're falling in mid-air you push forward to dive faster/go forward, pull back to spread out limbs & fall slower/gobackwardsa, you turn & then you press a button to deploy parachute. Maybe you can press other buttons to do a mid-aif roll. I'm sure it has been improved over TBOGT but don't expect a skydiving sim.
pariah87
Actually, I want to be able to shoot when I'm parachuting. Also have the option to have a fan on my back so I can fly around, maybe land in a baseball game and just go ape sh*t with my AK47 haha!
Nah Tso Gud
I wish things like this would be commented on from previewers as well... I would like to be able to steer my character a bit better during freefall, with and without a parachute.

Yeah I was thinking Just Cause 2 when I wrote that. I'd say that's best possible scenario but i'm not expecting anything that good. But in case any of you are wondering clarification of what good freefall mechanics are then look no further than Just Cause 2. I just don't want the characters to be stiff. Freefalling in JC2 was fun but super unrealistic. Your rate of descent was about three times slower than real life.

Ha, yeah, if you entered the freefall mode jumping off a water tower it took like 10 seconds to hit the ground
BlackNoise
I'm guessing it has been improved. They keep showing it off in different images, so they're definitely proud of it, especially since they showed it off in the latest demo/preview. I'm just hoping there will be wingsuits. There's so much crazy sh*t happening with that sport. I would love to see R* implement it properly.

Yeah i'll be honest I don't actually know sh*t about free falling physics. All I know is that Rico was really fun and easy to control and most importantly looked very fluid. That's what made it fun. But what you say does make sense. I timed his fall from the highest elevation the game would let me and if I didn't push forward it was a two and a half minute free fall which is pretty ridiculous. I think one of the articles estimated that franklin fell for around 30 seconds before pulling his chute. That's probably a little more realistic than JC2

rare.steak
Man. I can see how many people are going to throw in a lot of cash and time to try and earn the right to skydive and then to wingsuit. Me included.

spookymulder
CVG said that when he was falling it actually sounded like someone falling from the sky like a loud fffffffffff sound with a dynamic score in the back. little details like that make the game more appealing to me

I'm thinking that since Far Cry 3 introduced them that we could see it become a trend in gaming. Rockstar also stated that they are going for smaller DLC so maybe there is some potential there if the community outcry is large enough for them. After all rockstar was nice enough to delay the game for us to add in features that they previously said they wouldn't do, like vehicle and character customization as well as property purchases (not necessarily confirmed but it's a fair assumption that that's the reason for the delay). I know I'd pay 5-10 dollars for a wingsuit.
jperkovic
from Kotaku preview: "I wish I had a stopwatch going so that I could tell you how long it took Franklin to drift to the ground. Thirty seconds, maybe? A minute? Parachuting is a thing in this game, the Rockstar reps told me". I haven't seen many comments on that in other previews. MrcTOtheJ
I’d love to see Wingsuits done properly as well. Far Cry 3 did it pretty well IMO, honestly it was one of the best things you could just screw arround with in a game full of fun things to screw arround with lol. Would be aweomse if they did it as well, to see it in third person and everything would be awesome in it's own right. Imagine wing suiting out of the back of a cargo plane after diveing off backwards like a boss and half. That said, I'm sure Skydiving has some improvements, but I wouldn't expect a sim or anything personally I liked it in TBoGT quite a bit.
Chukkles
Te only issue I had with skydiving/BASE jumping in TBOGT is at first he goes into limb flailing mode before going into dive mode. It always looked stupid.
ChocoFrosty
I know what you mean. Skydiving / BASE jumping felt very thrown-together in TBoGT. The cheapest feeling part about it are the body movements during free fall. Luis' body position and movements are so jerky and unrealistic. It feels like they didn't spend much time developing it at all. SA's body animations while skydiving were far better than in IV. I hope V is vastly improved. idlewood
After today's news about Franklin's descent in the opening of the demo taking 3 minutes, I can give you some useless information. The following calculations assumes that it was in fact a 3-minute descent. If the velocity during a free fall in the game is equal to real life, the altitude from which he jumped could be anything from 4 751 to 32 392 ft. If he deployed the parachute immediately he would be falling at a speed of 18 mph during 3 minutes which corresponds to 4 751 ft. If he never deployed the parachute it would take approximately 12 seconds to reach terminal velocity and eventually hit the ground after falling a total of 32 392 ft (which seems pretty unlikely since he probably survived). According to Wikipedia, a typical jump in real life starts from an altitude between 3 000 and 13 000 ft. Let's say that Franklin was at an altitude right in the middle of my "lowest" altitude (4 751 ft) and the Wikipedia maximum altitude (13 000 ft). That would put him at an altitude of 8 876 ft (or 2 705 m).
