"This is a serious thread, and please no console wars".

"Why did you people even buy a 360 if you knew this was going to happen? Because it's cheaper?"

Wow, very hypocritical of you there. This game will be 2 discs, one for singleplayer, one for multiplayer. The only game to be multiple discs for xbox was L.A Noire, and that was because the facial animation technology took up a huge amount of space. There may be an optional HD texture pack, but it isn't going to be like 5 discs.

And for those saying 1 disc for each story, you do realize that you can switch from one character to another at any time right? That wouldn't make any sense at all. I mean, look at how they fit the original SA onto 1 disc on the PS2. They've had experience with this before, and I can trust Rockstar that they aren't going to make it anymore than 2 discs.

Did you read the previews? They said you can switch in and out of multiplayer pressing the D-Pad, that wouldn't work with 2 discs (assuming that's how it'll work for both consoles)

I know that, but the demo was apparently the PS3 version, which is most likely just one disc. That makes it possible to just switch into multiplayer.

Anyone thinks swapping disc would works on GTA, that simply won't

Being an open world game, GTA requires a lot of mandatory stuff (Always ready to load to RAM), so 8.3 GB alone simply won't be enough to fit all the map, environment, vehicles and other sh*t. Splitting the map into further discs mean you have to swap disc when travelling around, and that would make doing missions annoying as hell (Those requires you to get from one point to another)

Unless R* came up with their own magical compression tool, expect at least 2 disc, one for mandatory installation (At least the map and vehicles), the other with missions and side stuff will be required to play

And to your earlier post: My guess as to why GTA 4 Complete Edition is on 2 discs for Xbox and 1 disc for Ps3, is just to make it as simple as they can be.

Nope.

I think the reason for 2 discs for the 360 version of GTA IV: The Complete Edition was because the 360's DVD9 format either could not handle it or could not handle it well enough to be on one disc.

That's my view.

That's what I implied in my post. By making it 2 discs, if they could handle it, but it'd be a stretch to do so, it'd let them have ease-of-mind by putting it on 2.

Unfortunately, we'll never know.

I'm just wondering why R* hasn't announced how many discs it'll be on Xbox yet. A good couple months before BF3 was released, they just went out and said that it was gonna be on 2 discs for Xbox.

My guess is that R* just doesn't know if they'll be able to fit it on 1 disc or 2. It definitely won't be 3. I can guarantee that. 3 is too much for a GTA game.

People just don't understand code do they.

6.6GB disk space.

1 mission will probably take up a maximum of 6kb, that is tiny, very tiny. Not even a megabyte.

The thing that takes up most room on the disk is graphics and sound assets.

This will be one disk. Pushing it to two, but I would assume disk 2 would simply be for multiplayer.

Max Payne 3 was pretty detailed, yet not open world and it was around 20 GB on the consoles, 30 on the PC. I'm thinking V will have 2 to 3 discs on the 360. I won't be surprised if I see GTA V being 40 GB.

why would it be two disks on ONLY the 360? why wouldn't it be one or 2 for both ps3 and 360?

Because the Ps3 used Blu-ray, which can hold a lot, although you usually have to install things before you can play the game, don't know if this is because of the console or the drive itself.

Xbox has regular DVD drive, which means low capacity (around 8GB I think), but it doesn't have to do mandatory installs to play games. It's put in and play, but at the cost of multiple discs sometimes.

Hvitdverg: Ps3 isn't the lead platform. There is no lead platform.

I'm not trying to start a console war.

But seeing Rockstar presenting the game on a PS3, every single time so far.

It seems to me like the PS3 is "lead platform".

They usually show the version that is running the best, don't they?

This was my worry as well, but i don't think we have to worry about it. I dont remember what version of MP3 wwas shown to the press, but if that was PS3 too, it doesn't mean a thing. Both versions were pretty much identical. Plus i said it before...there has yet to be a Xbox 360 multiplatform game that is significantly less impressive in terms of performance and looks compared to PS3 version,

I have a PS3 but i rather not buy it for my PS3.

- When i'm gaming i'm 9 out of 10 times in a party chatting with my friends and we'll no doubt be playing it online a lot...most of them have only a 360 only a few of them a PS3. So i would have to have my 360 on to be able to chat with friends while also having the PS3 on to play GTA V.

- The controller. I prefer the 360 controller a great deal over the Dual Shock.

360 is simply my console of choice by far and i'd be really gutted actually if the PS3 version turns out to be a whole lot better, but that shouldn't be the case.

2 discs, one for SP, one for MP, there'll be no mandatory install, no fancy graphics upgrades, just simple 1 disc for Single player, 1 for multiplayer. they'll probably have the entire story on one, then copy the map and textures and audio onto disc two with the multiplayer components.

I don't understand why you need to chat to friends while playing a predominantly single-player game, which is what GTA is. We are not sure how great the multiplayer on GTA V will be, because the one on IV was not that good. I can understand the controller reason though.

If you don't mind the possibility of multiple discs, then the 360 version shouldn't be a problem. I just know I'm definitely getting this for the PS3.

And swap the disc everytime you press down on the D-pad? Yeah, sure.

I'd rather that than something popping up on screen midway through the story.

as some people have mentioned, you switch over to multiplayer through the dpad, so i sorta doubt that the disks will need to be swapped just to switch to that game mode. That being said, MP3 had 2 disks and only one of them had multiplayer on 'em. Then again, the graphics on MP3 were amazingly robust for a console game. LA noire had 3 disks but as some people have mentioned a large reason for that is the fat space taken by the facial video technology (aside from also being a beautiful and in fact very large game world).

I am not any sort of expert but I'd guess there would be a disk swap halfway through the storyline missions, or maybe two disk swaps every 1/3 the way through the storyline. The thing that is confusing me though is that in GTA we sometimes have different people ready to give us missions at different times, and we can choose when to do which. So i'd assume theres a number of overlapping missions on both disks if we have multiple mission bosses. They will also probably explore the option of installing the disks so you dont have to switch.

Keeping in mind they said you can replay missions through your phone, I have a feeling we may be surprised by this game. It may well be on one disk.

It'll really be fascinating to see.

Worst case scenario is that with disk swaps, theres the inconvenience of swapping, but hey at least 360 owners' game boxes will feel heftier wink.gif

Best case scenario is one comfy and easy disk!

For those who are trying to see how the disk space adds up, I would recommend going on xbox live and looking at the download size of certain games.

I haven't checked in like a year but i feel like i remember the gta iv download to be like 4gb's and rdr around there too. I could be wrong about this. either way there's plenty of space there to hit the 7ish gb's on the disk.

We'll see.

GTA V is really really huge so I think it's ganna be like this

"Welcome to Downtown Los Santos, Please insert DVD number (14)"

I think that Rockstar will find a solution, like what others said the install option that comes in case of two DVDs or something new that we don't know yet.. Rockstar always brings some new tricks and surprises, so the only way to know what's going to happen is on September 17th.

The only reason LA Noire was on multiple discs is because the facial animations took up a ridiculous amount of space and could not be compressed.

This game will fit on one disc, and unpack and install to the console hard drives. If anything is on another disc, it will not be map or models, it'll be music, which will require an install if that is the case, no doubt in my mind.

2 discs. One to install data and the other to play so that you don't have to swap. Like halo 4 and l.a noire

LA noire does not have that.

You need all discs regardless if you install.

But here it would serve them to have a download disc and a play disc.

I don't think it would serve anyone well to have the map on 3 discs when you could have map on one and install data on one.

Whatever the answer, I think we can all agree on the fact that Rockstar needs to let us know now because I will not be pre-ordering the game until I know.

I'm not going to pre-order a game I don't know if I will be able to use on launch, that would defeat the whole object of pre-ordering.

If it is on more than 1 disk it will be a huge slap in the face to 360 owners who have pre-ordered and only have a 4GB HD.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be on more than 1 disk, but they need to let people know so they can make arrangements to accomdate the game at launch.

Maybe if it was one more than 1 disk they would have said when they opened pre-ordering? I don't know how they did it for L.A.N and Halo 4.

What does 4GB have to do with it??

Regardless of installation you still need to swap discs when prompted! So just play it off the disc.

Not in the case of Forza 4, Halo 4 and I'm thinking of one other game, but It has slipped my mind.

And If I recall correctly, Rockstar cannot make the game have a required install.  Microsoft won't let games have mandatory installs because they sell crappy little 4GB systems.

Its at the end of the consoles life cycle so why not break the rules. Anyone that still has a 4GB system probably dont use their console much.

Microsoft will not allow them to release the game on their system if there is a mandatory install, it's as simple as that.

I don't think anything will have to go, Just Like L.A Noire they will have the map and everything else on every single disc, the storyline will be split over multiple discs though, they can't have you change disc in different areas, because what about when you're switching characters all the time? You're going to end up switching discs, that's damn stupid.

Rockstar is not using MotionScan technology like L.A Noire though so each disc will accommodate more textures and such because there isn't so much space going towards the animations, the map and game audio will fit nicely on to one disc, with space left for the story,

@AceOfHicks, no you are wrong, they cannot do that because Microsoft doesn't allow mandatory installs, so you can't have part of the game on disc 2 like on PC that you install.

or buy a PS3 which is pointless with the new generation of consoles coming out this

Yeah totally pointless to buy an established console with an entire library of games because some new unknown consoles that could easily be complete market failures the likes of the Vita are coming out. 360 and PS3 will be supported for years to come buddy.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but in my opinion what i've said should be common sense for the most part, if anyone paid any attention they would know how L.A Noire handled it, and how it will most likely be handled into the future.

Thank f*ck Microsoft is opting with Blu-Ray for next gen.

You're going to end up switching discs, that's damn stupid.

Rockstar is not using MotionScan technology like L.A Noire though so each disc will accommodate more textures and such because there isn't so much space going towards the animations, the map and game audio will fit nicely on to one disc, with space left for the story,

Finally people with sound and reasonable thinking start to join this thread..

No,I wish they went with HD-DVD's. About as big as a Blu-ray, But a faster read time and what-not.

Too bad they aren't supported or made or w/e.
