Yeah this is what i'm thinking. The game is just too huge to be on 1 disc. I say 2 at the very least.

yea this thread is basically a thread for all PS3 fanboys to tell how bad 360 is..

not bad, just both PS3 and 360 is incredibly outdated and old.

Probably 2, but it's hard to wrap my head around how that would work for an open world game. Unfortunately, they can't do a mandatory install because Microsoft f*cked up by selling 360 units without hard drives.

It's mainly based on compression and optimization. Quit bitching, you'll be fine.

"incredibly outdated"? lol SNES is incredibly outdated but I'm still playing games on it, graphics are not the most important part of a game. whatsthat.gif

If you want very good graphics, just turn off your computer and look around you.. yes.. the real life has beautiful, stunning graphics (also known as Matrix lol.gif), so have

fun exploring the world.. or at least the bathroom while taking a sh*t.

The only problem with one being an install disk and the other a play disk, what are Xbox owners that have a 4 gb console supposed to do? I know IV's PS3 install data was about 8gb right? I would imagine it to be even larger with V, so I'm curious as to how 4gb console users will manage.

Why does everybody keep forgetting that 360 has an "install game data" option?

exactly

R* should just say f*ck it and include the mandatory install. There's no reason for the majority of 360 owners to not have hard drives at this point.

I'm actually pretty certain that most Xbox owners have the 4gb console (since they're the cheapest). So to say f*ck it to a large part of the market isn't exactly a smart business decision.

I like the Xbox 360 because I can install the ENTIRE contents of the game discs , unlike the ps3. While I may have to swap a disc on the xbox, the optical drive doesn't spin for 6+ hours non stop while im playing, like it would on ps3. Optical drives are very fickle when it comes to consoles with optical media distribution, and being able to install the whole game and the drive sits and does nothing is a big bonus.

I would hope that 4GB would be enough. I doubt the second disc would be filled to the brim, so it could possibly work.

Either way, I'm sure R* has a solution for it. I don't have an Xbox so I don't know if any other company has managed it already or not before.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I really hope that they tell us the disc situation soon, because if it has an install, I will need a bigger hard drive. I don't see the story being split on multiple discs, that would just be an inconvenience. I doubt SP and MP on separate discs, as the multiplayer is supposedly a lot quicker to drop in/out of, with the 4th slot on the wheel being your MP character. The most logical solution would be an install disc, one-time use, that installs half the sh*t, and a main disc that is used whenever you play.

Man, why the f*ck would anyone buy a console with only 4 gigs of space? The PS3 Super-Slim I bought my gf has 500 gigs and I upgraded my own 120 gig PS3 slim to 500 gigs a long time ago. Don't any 360 games require a mandatory install?

Motion capture data takes up a LOT of disk space. Anyone here download the LA Noire DLC? The animations account for most of the large file size.

Two disks, at least.

I would say 2 discs. With that level of detail and all the audio, I don't know how they could fit it all on 1 disc. I predict something like Forza where you have 2 but one of them is an install disc that isn't required to install and not needed, but has extra content. I think in Forza 3 there were certain cars that weren't accessible without installing the game data from the second disc. I'm not sure if 4 was the same way. Maybe they could put the radio stations on the second disc and let you choose whether or not to install them. In any way, I don't see R* going the route of switching discs during gameplay, at least in GTA. Has a GTA ever had to switch discs to access another island? I thought you did at some point in Vice City but its been too long to remember. Maybe it was just the really long loading screens.

Since GTA doesn't use Video cutscenes, i guess the biggest memory eater is the audio. I just checked on my PC, audio takes up 6GB in GTA IV. The other big one is the map at around 5.8GB.

Why does everyone keep forgetting Rockstar won't allow GTA to be multi-disk, Multi-disk DOES NOT work in an open world sandbox game, it just doesn't.

1 disk people, 1 disk..

Compression technology has come along far enough..

Rockstar has never used pre-rendered cutscenes (at least in recent memory), but GTA:V will use the same advanced animation technology as they used in LA: Noire, the animation capture files are notoriously HUGE, much larger than a simple video file.

Second to motion capture and cutscene data are the audio files.

GTA:IV is a poor comparison, as it uses obsolete tech.

No, No they will not, In LA: Noire, that level of mocap tech was required for the game to function, In GTA you're not trying to read the f*cking wrinkles on somebodies left nipple to progress the game. GTA V will use a better version of Mocap than what IV had, But nowhere's near the level of LA: Noire. Never.

World data and model / texture assets could easily be stored all on one disk, I imagine disk swapping will only need to occur when progressing in the story, since cutscenes and animations files are so large. This would have little impact on the game.

Max Payne animation files are notably large as well, and based on the trailers we have seen it is clear Rockstar has spared little expense on their animations in GTA:V. No matter how optimized they make the animations it would NEVER fit on a single HD-DVD. (Unless the games ends up being disturbingly short.)

And If I recall correctly, Rockstar cannot make the game have a required install.  Microsoft won't let games have mandatory installs because they sell crappy little 4GB systems.

Halo 4?

Halo is Microsoft product, so...

Game data installs are a relatively new concept on the 360 that Microsoft just started to embrace with Halo 4. There's a difference between game data installs and game installs.

Game data installs are where extra data on additional discs gets copied to the hard drive and can be accessed by the first disc after installation. Think of the old CD days where PC games would require additional discs at install but wouldn't need them after. This is likely what GTAV will use. Older games didn't have this because Microsoft only added support for this recently.

Game installs self-contained copies (think of an ISO rip) of a disc and the game can't see that they're installed nor can they access them.
