The male fanbase is the majority, and while many people may be fine with homosexuality, I think forcing us to play as a openly gay character wouldn't sit well with many players just because it isn't their orientation, their style, or more so it is weird if it isn't your thing. It would also give a lot of publicity to the game. A lot of people might give Trevor a chance, since they've so obviously made him the most crazy and psycho one, which is what everyone clearly likes about him. Gay characters that are totally normal but happen to be gay are a positive and progressive thing. Would you be happy to play as a white character if you were black, or a female character if you were male, or an old character if you were young, or an alien if you were human, or a... You get the point. GTA is in a position where they CAN be progressive, and they have taken (at times hamfisted) steps in the right direction. They even named a game "the ballad of gay tony". I'd LOVE if right at the very end of the game, two of the protags became a couple in a very low key way. That would f*ck with so many people on such a beautiful level. It's more about how it would make R* look. The obvious question would be "why?". Why make him a gay character? And why make that gay character such a disgusting person? This is 2013.
