73duster
Considering all of the possibilities in terms of vehicle travel, an island is the ONLY logical choice. Red Dead Redemption was an exception because you were limited to travel by horseback, or by foot. It was a different era, and it was realistic in the way you couldn't go beyond a certain point. This is a modern world, and a limitless ocean is the only realistic option.
CryptReaperDorian
Good. Having the illusion of endless miles of ocean is much more authentic than the illusion of endless miles of sand or mountains. It also helps you feel like there might be something way off in the distance.
DS 17
The world IRL is an island. /thread You are damn right. It's just about the size. So if we were ants in V the world would be huge like a continent, so a landlock would be incredible unrealistic. Just think about the ants. // Philosophy ... In fact I am glad it is not landlocked. Jakee.
I have said it before, and I will say it again. An endless desert would look stupid. People have made very valid points in this thread and others, not only will it look stupid, it will be a waste of time.
mulder84
endless desert would be even worse. Wrong. If you don't want to go out into the endless desert, you wouldn't have to. It would be a nice option for those who want it. Fly a plane as far as you can, crash and survive, realize last save was hours ago, have to walk back to a city to save. Is that your idea of fun? Crash a plane INTO THE OCEAN, realize last save was hours ago, have to SWIM back to a city to save. What's the f*cking difference? Enlighten me on that, because they seem EXACTLY THE SAME to me, except one's walking and other's swimming. Seriously, I don't understand all the hate on being landlocked. The ONLY logical argument I've come across so far is that procedurally generated terrain wouldn't look as good as the main map, which I hoped Rockstar had something up their sleeves to solve (or at least alleviate) that problem. The rest are just giving plain bullsh*t and retarded arguments. That said, I'm disappointed BUT not that disappointed, since it has always been that way, and the size of the map has been confirmed countless times to be massive enough to give a landlocked illusion except at the edges. Los Santos.
They should have done infinite land on the east and north boundary and infinite water on the west and south boundary. Edited May 2, 2013 by Los Santos.

This brings up an amazing point. Given that the entirety of underwater is explorable and lung strength is a skill, this opens up some pretty interesting options for escaping from the police when it comes to crashing a car or plane into the water and waiting until it goes down to escape. I<3GTAV
To people who use that "LA is surrounded by land on one side", so were ALL of the other cities Rockstar has used! This isn't an exact replica, Los Santos is it's own city, with several parodies around the map. It can be an island.
erextion
RDR actually feels like you are playing in a SANDBOX. You are reminded it's a game by being locked in. In GTA V, you wont feel like you a stuck in a box, but you'll have total freedom and a sense that there's something beyond... It's moronic to want to be locked-in, in a GTA. Some people just blow my mind. Great point!
Flashify
At least as an island you can get to everywhere you can see, unlike landlocked you can't get to 'that' mountain in the distance.
gtapolicetrucker
They should have done infinite land on the east and north boundary and infinite water on the west and south boundary. finally someone with some common sense, now im not saying that it being a island is bad or anything but to me it just seems unreal that all of these city or states in gta are on big ass islands when in reality there suppose to be attached. i just wish for once that it could possibly attach to the land on one side to give the illusion as if something is out there or vice city and liberty city are just across this never ending desert,

kesta195
I originally thought the same but I have come to terms with it now. Think of it like this: all the characters in the GTA universe believe that there is land beyond our GTAV map, and there is in a sense. The ocean is just an illusion, and R*'s way of telling us that this is all the map you are getting. But it's not really there. The ocean is just the most slick and practical way of representing game boundaries.

Perhaps. I guess my only beef is that many are against this idea because "it is stupid" and "it won't work". It is a pretty damn good idea in my opinion. It's different in games like Far Cry 3 and Just Cause 2, where they're specifically set in an unnamed/fictional island. GTA is different, because it's stated to be set in a much bigger nation and continent. Land locking provides that illusion it's part of a bigger land mass, albeit unnecessary, but then again, so are customizations, interiors and a lot of other features in GTA that makes it more 'real'. And for those who think if it's landlocked then we will have to see other states/cities/settlements eventually when you go far enough, do you actually see Europe or Africa when you fly far enough from Liberty City? Or see Hawaii and even Asia eventually when you fly from San Andreas?

Dick Valor
Very disappointed at this news but now i know car customization, property buying and character customization is in i'm not too bothered and i'll let rockstar slide on this one. Lol! What a noob. This guy probably never owned a PS2 or at least gamed at all last-gen. Actually i've played computer games since the original playstation. I can even remember the moment i opened it for the first time on Christmas day. When i played san andreas i would of only been 12 so i wasn't really concerned about how the map was surrounded by water. Now i am older and wiser i care for realism somewhat in certain games i play, GTA being one of them. I just cant imagine this fictional america in the GTA universe having cities that are lone islands and not one big landmass. You're older and wiser and care for realism, so you wish for invisible magical walls to impede us. Ok. You're putting words in his mouth. He said nothing about invisible walls. Has the possibility of infinite landmass not occurred to your tiny little mind?
