YG Low Down
Tell the truth though i would have wanted rockstar to just plain have made the gangs color red and blue. Would that be illegal or somethin? I don't think so, but having the main character be part of either the blue or red gang would suggest a certain preference for one or the other, which I don't think R* would want to do. It's better to just make it simple and not involve any real-life affiliations into the mix. Yea, that makes sense
universetwisters
That's because in real life Mafia's change dons practically every year because they either get locked up die of old age or their on the run so R* change the name every game, There were only two mafia families in III, the Leones and the Forellis. In IV, there were 5 families (6 if you count the Pegorinos). Explain that.

bringerofblood2000
Do you seriously think Rockstar would include African American gangs with the colors of Red & Blue? I don't think the real Bloods & Crips would appreciate that, think about it. It's just the most logical choice to bring Green vs Purple again. We don't know if they are actually called Grove Street & Ballas yet, but I don't see why they wouldn't?

blakeney
people love references and easter eggs, which taking back Grove will include, its a good choice by R* ! Not grove.. Its families this^ And the idea of it being anything but Family's & Balla's is just as silly as thinking R* are unoriginal because they have called the police boring old LSPD again... And anyone that was sure it wouldn't have any "gang sh*t" in atall, at this stage of the game, we can confirm were officially deluded. yakprince
Mafias and Gangs are two different things, Mafias HAD to have new names simply because of the Era change and there are different people the mafia was started/ran by. Gangs simply "Families & Ballas" aren't real peoples names, not to mention they're just R*'s version of Bloods & Crips so theres really no sense in fixing something that isn't broken. DODI3OG
Even the Yardies reappeared in GTA 4 in the form of the Hillside Posse and other rival sets. Even the multi-colored South Side Hoods reappeared as well with Red and Blue instead of Red and Purple. They might have thought that bringing the Families and Ballas back would appeal very much to fans of the GTA series especially to those who're fans of GTA SA. It's not mainly because they're GTA's version of Bloods and Crips. Rockstar could just retexture them with red and blue but as what I've said, they need to stick to their own "branding". Grand Theft Savage
That's how gangs really work. There could be blood and crips at war in an area for hell of a long time. 20 years later, those will definitely still be there. Even if the names are changed, they could be apart of what is called a "set," which is a smaller portion of a larger gang. Making new gangs would just be dumb. Where I live, the Latin Kings have controlled the south side of town for nearly 25 years. Now, their name is the "Loco" something (it's Spanish, so I forgot). They're still the Latin Kings. All of their parents were with the Latin Kings. That's just how it is...

If they do, it won't be the first time a 3-era gang made it into the HD era. Because the Yardies already did. The Diablos and Southside Hoods did appear in the forms of the Spanish Lords and the ni**er gangsters. Though, their names were changed to match their real life counterparts. Spanish Lords=Latin Kings, Money Over Bitches=Sex, Money, Murder, Yardies=Yardies.

SMM, DDP, Trintarios, Netas, are not as publicly knows as just crips and bloods. Although SMM (sex money murder) is part of the UBN (United Blood Nation), not everyone knows that. So not having those gangs from that era was irrelevant to this era.
