When will Grand Theft Auto 5 release on PC?

GTA 5 PC release date — our best guess, supported by mathematics

After the release of the new GTA 5 trailer, we became conspicuously aware, once again, of the absent PC release date for Rockstar’s next open world fiasco. So we reached our hands into the mists of Grand Theft Autos past, crunched some numbers, and came up with the best possible estimate of when the game will be announced and released for the PC.

If we look at all games in the Grand Theft Auto series since Vice City, we can see that it’s about 462 days, on average, between the announcement of the game and the announcement (not release) of the PC version. It’s a slightly more reasonable 212 days between the first console release and the PC release. You can see a game-by-game breakdown in this handy chart:

If we take the average time between console and PC announcement and add it to GTA 5′s original announcement date of October 13, 2011, that should have put the PC release date announcement around January 17, 2013. No such luck. Assuming they’re going to make us wait just as stupidly long as they did for GTA 4 (821 days from the first E3 tease, for the record), we’ll be hearing about a PC release date around January 11, 2014. Every main series entry since Vice City has failed to announce a PC ship date until after the first console version shipped.

In terms of when we might actually be able to play it, the gap between console and PC release has been consistent(ly frustrating) at around 212 days, without the kind of crazy deviation we see in the release date announcement window. 212 days after the currently listed ship date for GTA 5 on the consoles would be April 17, 2014. If the gap is as long as it was for San Andreas, we would have it by April 30 instead.

On the off chance that Rockstar makes us wait as long for a PC announcement as they did on GTA 4, and as long between PC announcement and PC release as they did on San Andreas, we’ve been shoved back to July 4, 2014. Not to say that they couldn’t try to annoy us further by breaking their own records, but that’s our official prediction for the most distant date to reasonably expect the game on PC.

There you have it: by our highly scientific reckoning, you’ll probably be loading up GTA 5 just in time for the 238th anniversary of America’s independence. As to when we may be free from the tyranny of waiting months for our Grand Theft Auto ports (we still haven’t forgotten about Red Dead Redemption, by the way), we don’t have enough data to speculate. At least we always get the best version. We’re willing to wait for the ability to mod in stuff like this.

It was born on PC.....

But it got known on consoles. Without consoles GTA would be nothing. Look at Call of Duty. First on PC then its a more well known 360 game.

I'm guessing it will release for PC after it releases for next gen Xbox and the PS4.

Sometime in November or December for next gen console and...maybe around March 2014 for PC.

Please Rockstar, give us time to enjoy multiplayer before modders on the PC come and f*ck it all up for everyone as they did with IV.

Good point. I'm sure they'll release it for the next gen system for best compatibility (not up to date on the rumors for backwards compatibility of the 720 or PS4 as I don't do consoles), and possibly a bump up in graphics quality to maximize the look of the game in accordance to the higher spec systems. With that, it'd probably be good timing for the PC port and would allow them to work on setting up options to increase graphics qualities.

With that said, sucks PC takes longer to launch sad.gif

Not that I'm against consoles, but I was huge into SA modding and enjoy those capabilities, although I never did any for IV or even installed anything from the net. When I first played there was no modding options and by the time it came along I lost all interest in the game. I'm assuming/hoping modding will be similar to IV since so many tools are already in place.

But, my new roommate has a PS3, so I might just pick it up to hold me over. I have a feeling the missions/gameplay is going to be much more entertaining than IV was, which I stopped playing half-way through due to it just not being engaging enough. The three character setup looks to be a pretty awesome experience.

I finally care about this, because I just got a PC that could run it. Hopefully they will release it for PC, but I have zero confidence. confused.gif

R* already said that they think in buisness and when most people wont buy it or the money they gain isnt worth the port ( like in RDR) they wont port it.

easy as that

and that doesnt mean there wont be a PC version. just depends on if its worth

I hope they aren't that stupid to assume that it won't be worth it or nobody will buy it on PC.. because there's tons of people demanding for it.

We're all waiting patiently for them to release it on PC too even though console gamers are already playing it. And for that I hate hearing that PC gamers are all a bunch of whiners. Consoles would be crying just as much if it were the other way around. But besides the point I know it's better for business for them to release console versions first, and I totally understand and respect that. If it supports the developer I'm all for it. It's never been news to me that consoles get earlier releases. I can't be jealous because I know that I will be playing it to it's fullest potential and quality. I love the flexibility of PCs controls... I don't like sitting there trying to shoot and adjusting my aim with a joystick, then firing having the recoil f*cking it up, it's the most annoying sh*t ever. Auto aim takes the fun out of any game with shooting involved. I want to shoot someone in the knee and shoulder then kill them :) I tried driving the cars with the ps3. Found it too fking boring and irritating. I can't do stunts and drift around a corner without the car almost coming to a complete stop or smashing the f*ck out of something. Maybe that's something that comes with practice... but I started gaming on consoles and it was always that way.
