Maybe in certain missions you'll be able to control one more character, aside from the main ones. Maybe somewhere near the ending, one of the characters will turn to be a bitch, so you'll get some new character to control. Maybe, it's a slot for Chop. I think if I was developing this game with multiple characters and had a character wheel of selection, it would be fitting to add multiplayer in there for easy functionality. If I remember rightly they said about the fourth slot being 'greyed out', whilst Rockstar demo'd a single player mission. Only seems right to me that it's the multiplayer avatar.
