He's using Trevor and Franklin to help him get back at a crooked colleague, who maybe double-crossed him? But I know you're saying that Trevor would know about it? Maybe he does and don't care because Michael may've been a little crooked. He knows that Michael used to be a cop. I think there's some twist in the story. He's saying what if they want us to think he's a former bank robber but he's actually a undercover cop. The whole story would be ruined if they ruined the big twist by mentioning Michael is actually a cop.
