How long is V in development really

Lot of people here says how V is in development for 5 years and that we will wait for the next game for 5 more years. They consider that work on GTA V started right in 2008 after IV release .But is t really? PC version of IV was released in december 2008 by Toronto, but North was probably have to help on that too.GTA TLAD was released almost a year later in february 2009 and TBOGT in october 2009,and PC/PS3 version in april 2010,two years after IV release, which means that work on what was basicaly still GTA IV continue for two moe years. Also key people from North studio were helping in development of RDR,LA Noire and MP3,their names are in credits of all those games. Also last rumors of development of Agent were in late 2009,so maybe that project was put on hold then? From that i think that development of GTA V started after april 2010,wwhich means more understandable 3 years dev cycle,so next GTA after V could be expected in much less time than we think, maybe in 2 or 3 years. Also, what ever DLC is prepared for V i hope it will be released in period of 6 months after release of game , not 2 years, so that new cycle of development could start then. That is just my opinion guys, what do you think? When did work on V actually started?

Well development doesn't always mean that its their 100% effort, so maybe they did start developing V right after IV but that wasn't their #1 focus at the time.

San andreas and vice city were basically dlc but they were only brought out on discs because well there wasn't any other way back then. So we could probably expect another 2 titles maybe after GTA V pretty soon

the development of gta v started before gta iv was released, not anything serious though but just the opening of the project. gta iv started development before sa was released as rockstar was working on there new rage engine. im guessing the next gta development process will start as we get around to the release of gta v were they'll start planning the essentials.

I'd say a couple months after IV was released they started to get it properly started but it would be part time. Probably just travelling to LA to check it out and take photos/videos. Once they got back they'd create the map then start writing the story and creating the characters. It would be slow up until late 2009/early 2010 after the DLC came out. That's probably when they went into full development but didn't announce it officially until October 2011. At that point it will have been in development for ~3 years. It has been officially in full development for ~18 months now.

I'd say, in total, it's been in development for ~4 years 4 months up until today and will probably go gold in August so altogether will be about 4 years 8 months. That's just a guess but it could easily be in development for over 5 years by the time August rolls around. Nobody knows except Rockstar but I'd say it will be AT LEAST 4 and a half years total to develop it.

They were complete,stand-alone games,LCS and VCS were more like DLCs.

If you think developing started with taking pictures of real life L.A: 5-6 years.

If you think about mapping, character development: 5 years.

They went into full development November 2011, and they started the complete basic stuff right after GTA IV, like locations and characters and stuff. The game has been a thing for 5 years but I reckon they started maps, characters, voices around late 2009.

Most likely right after GTA Iv. They might have had a smaller subdivision work on the episodes.

Wrong. The story was written FIRST it's always first, then they go and take thousands of reference photos then create the map.

Anyway, I believe they started May 2009 because that was when evidence started appearing that Rockstar were in L.A. taking photos. There was a thread on here way back discussing it.

They just started last night. They've been procrastinating all these months and all the recent pictures and trailers have been made using stop-motion animation.

well Rockstar said they start working on the map first, so probably the map since 2008 while the rest of the team were working on Agent, then they probably all started working on it around 2010/2011

''We've done two or three movie shoots for this game spread out through various three-weeks shoots,'' said Houser.

Rockstar North probably started research in 2008 after GTA IV was released and started development in 2009 after they released TLAD and TBOGT. At least Five years of development.

Does agent still even exist? If it still exists I imagine it has been pushed back to the PS4 by now anyways.

Ha, yes, everything we have seen so far is claymation colgate.gif

I think they had couple of people thinking about GTAV for a couple of years, during their lunch breaks, and then they got serious sometime in 2011 and put a few designers on it to make a city model and some beta characters.

When management saw the work that had been done, sometime around end of September 2011, they immediately called up marketing and said, "Hey, guys, GTAV is in 'full development!' Crank out a trailer to bait the whole world into thinking we are almost there."

They're finally hitting their development momentum now. tounge.gif

I'm not even sure, but wasn't it meant to be released in like 2009/2010? I hope it's a PS4 game though, it'd be a brilliant title for a new console.
