Open Letter/Plea to Rockstar North

Listen, I know I may be jumping the gun and looking a little too far into a tweet, but while I was stalking CallTheCoroner's post history (due to a quote train I misread the author of where I wrongly assumed he was claiming to be a Rockstar) I came across a tweet someone else had been quoted sharing in one of his posts:

https://twitter.com/OriginInsider/status/327910865015820288

Do you see that? Listen, I am in no way shape or form making this topic to claim or insinuate or ask if people think it will be on Origin. And I am in no way trying to be a bad ass or exert some form of control over something I myself have absolutely no control over, but I do want to take the moment to put words where you might see it to hopefully appeal to you guys and tell you how I feel about this, and hopefully others will come out and share the same idea about this.

Again, I am not saying it is coming on Origin if it comes to pc at all, but I am, however, imploring you not to do that if it is an option at this time.

If it is on the table, leave it there. You leave it there, and you get as far away as you possibly can.

EA are garbage and evil (my opinion) and so is their delivery software.

I personally will never and have never purchased a game that requires origin, I have used it on another's computer, and know I will never support anything on it nor install it myself. I usually stay away from anything EA ever touches, and have been THOROUGHLY disappointed in anything they've done in the past 5 years minimum. Probably 10. and if GTA V ends up on there, without a Steam option, I for one will be able to live without access to multiplayer if you catch my drift.

That is not a "threat" that I will illegally download your game and play it without origin if origin is in fact required to play it legitimately - it is a straight out statement that I will do so and likely in far higher numbers than if you put this game on Steam and in Retail with an option to register with Steam where it belongs.

And that's sad. Because I am a LOYAL customer. A valid gamer. A steam user. A licensed gamer. I do not steal your stuff. I support it, because I want more. I do NOT support that which does not belong in gaming and should have been defunct a long time ago, as EA would be dead by now if it wasn't for mouth breathers who don't know the difference between mediocre liars with bad support and quality innovation such that you provide with awesome tech support. And that brings me to something else. You've let me down once already, I will have to call MS to fix my GTA IV, because you put the keys in their hands, literally.

So please, also Don't do GFWL or whatever they decide to call it by the time your game is out again either. That was stupid to begin with, although I understand the money talks and at the time you needed to do it and the cool features it theoretically would have made good, it was garbage, and my STEAM version still to this day will not let me use my key anymore, when I shouldn't even need one anyway for any game properly released on steam, won't let me use my new key (guess it's old now?) from those bastards at MS tech support, and my DLC doesn't work anymore either. It's bullsh*t. I bought the GTA IV stuff day-and-date each time it came to PC at full price, and now I can't even play 2/3 of it, or online, without first giving another 2 or 3 hours of my life to MS to get yet another key I should not need when I bought my game on Steam. My DLC needing a key I can understand, because I got it from D2D before gamefly's also evil butt bought it.

I for one am not willing to live with that hassle again, and am also unwilling to pass up GTA V. So my pickle is this: Let me buy your game. Please do not require Origin. I want to get it out there before it is something that is confirmed and all we can do is complain and change nothing. Maybe there is still time. Maybe I can save GTA V, in a sense. Maybe, it is the furthest thing from your minds, and I am wasting my time on something you would never ever do (get in bed with the likes of EA with something as special as GTA). I sincerely hope I am wasting my time, because I will still experience this game if it requires origin, I'll just have to feel dirty while I do it.

Thanks for your consideration.

And fellow GTA fans, please ring in, and let it be known, how you feel about this possibility.

I know that I am drawing A LOT from a friendly tweet from the EA peeps supporting you guys and helping get the word out, and I TOTALLY do NOT mind if you put it on "either origin or steam", but please, do not pull an EA like they did with crytek and make even the steam version require origin - cause they didn't get my money because of that, and you won't either.

I know I am only one voice until others come in (to flame me or agree, either or), but the US congress sees each letter as a letter from 13,000 americans, minimum, through mathematics and statistics telling them that 1 person saying makes "at least" 13,000 feeling the exact same sentiment. I realize that USA is a big place with 333 million people, but come on, this isn't the USA I'm talking about, it's GTA V, and the whole world will play this game. And half of the world will do whatever it takes to play it without origin. Just sayin. That's all. Thanks for your consideration.

edit: Except mass effect 1 and 2, they were awesome. Mass Effect 3, I will never know, because it requires origin. And it isn't GTA V, so I am not taking the time to get around it like I would for GTA.

I don't think you need to be too worried. Only games by EA are on Origin (so it appears), and I know that Rockstar Games strongly dislikes EA also.

Yes, I hope you are right man, I really do. I know they don't like them either, or didn't, but money talks, right? I won't mind if I have the OPTION of steam or origin - I will be severely hurt if they let EA pay them to take away options though. They may not like Ea, but isn't IV available on Origin? Both is fine, origin only is not. tounge.gif

I don't think you should be worried about Origin or GFWL. Max Payne 3 wasn't on either.

Shouldn't read anything into that tweet. Just like you shouldn't have read anything into that tweet in 2012 from Xbox support that said V will be out in October of that year.

Coming from you Adriaan, I feel SO much better and optimistic about this, and the fact MP3 wasn't there either, that is a good sign too!

Why would you even think that it may require Origin? It's not an EA game.. besides that we already got sort of a DRM with Social Club. It will be required to play online.

And GFWL won't be used either.. obviously. Last time was IV and that was a mistake.

Imo Origin just getting involved with #GTAV chat to get some limelight the cheapest way possible! I can't see GTA being on Origin at all, defo not exclusive! (ill admit I didn't read all your post, and im making the assumption that is the basic point of it? tounge.gif )

Well, I am/was worried because IV had 3 levels of DRM.

1: GFWL

2: Social Club

3: Securom

All at the same time like "wtf?"

Which i was okay with and never had a problem until i needed to reinstall and then had to sit with MS for a key and it looks like I have to do this again all the sudden.

Assumption warning: I assume GFWL got them a nice paycheck from MS, or was included in the xbox timed deal they had, something, they made money to do it, that's my assumption. I'm sure they pay a deal with securom to use that, and they own Social Club I guess.

If I am right in that assumption, there is always the possibility that Origin and parent EA will pay for that kind of treatment, knowing they need HUGE exclusives to ever get more people to install origin.

But yea, I probably am looking too far in and assuming too much, just to be on the safe side, I hope they read this and consider it, or otherwise I hope they hate EA enough to tell them to keep their money if they try to get the game exclusive to origin like they did with crysis and mass effect 3. They had plenty of power to do that, since they published and distributed those games for crytek and bioware, but you never know when they will start targeting completely outside third parties like rockstar with big paychecks to pump their origin agenda, you know?

So knowing EA, GTA V is something they would see as a way to do that. Their goal won't be to help deliver the game, it will be deliver their own delievery mechanism first and foremost, and that tweet just sent my mind racing is all tounge.gif

My assumption would be they chose GFWL due to it working just like Xbox Live, so it was easy to get the multiplayer/friends/achievements/networking going. Less work.

I don't think we should worry about that. Rockstar hates EA with a passion, and they probably will use Social Club like every other recent PC game they've made. I can only see it on Steam.

EA is the very antithesis of Rockstar, so I doubt very much that Origin would get exclusivity on GTA V digital. If you remember, EA tried a hostile takeover of R*. Very scary time & this was when EA were seemingly bouncing back, before they quickly reverted to their devilish form.

While I'm not interested in digital downloads (unless they come free with a packaged copy), I think Valve are a very similar company to R*. They both have a lot of autonomy (Valve probably has more), both do things completely different to the rest of the industry, both have taken an age to bring out a sequel (Valve take the biscuit with HL Ep.3 though) & both create quality games, unsurpassed in their respective genres.

In short, you are worrying over nothing.

I doubt anyone here cares about ny opinion: but honestly I wouldn't mind the use of GFWL as ive never had a problem with it.

As for origin, i agree %100 it is nothing but trouble as I recently learned Xd.

I guess this post really doesn't have a point other than expressing my opinion.

I could not figure out (and still haven't) how to untangle my connections between Windows Live, GFWL and Social Club. I don't use Windows Live for anything anyway, but I don't like it being tied to Social Club. I also am not sure if Microsoft also has my Xbox Live account tied to this. I think they do.

I'm thinking of getting GTAV for PS3 this time around (since I got a refurb PS3 recently) so I don't have to deal with the various Microsoft entanglements. Hopefully I can create a new Social Club account associated only with the PS3 / Playstation Home and keep it isolated.

In general, I don't like the idea of all these various corporate entities having some hook into my gameplaying history or accounts. Does that sound like a paranoid rant? Yes, it does. But that doesn't mean that the bastards are not out to monetize me anyway.

I could see EA getting their hands on on some of that good ass gta sauce. It'll be alright with me in my own fan voice if they can get it on both steam and origin, gamefly client, GFWL, and even a humble bundle where if you spend 60 bucks and gta v and some indie games - whatever, get it out there in front of everyone to experience, as many as possible, let the world see your talent on all those platforms but don't make it complicated for the users tounge.gif

Anyone who has any single one of these clients, has steam, right? Rare exceptions perhaps, but in general, bam. Put it on all of them, steam is gonna penetrate and kick butt. But maybe some others will suddenly surprise and prove to be really lucrative markets in some parts of the world or regions of the world. Put it anywhere you can. But please, make it so steam users can play it, likely a given, but this thread can let you guys at R* all over and all involved with your labors to GTA and Lazlow who I assume and hope has returned to produce the airwaves, and all the talent, artists and engineers, that it is going to be THAT appreciated when this game delivers a far more potent PC product than the likes of GTA IV (even though of course, Great game regardless, and for me it ran well, just until I now will keep having to call GFWL support for keys).

Let steam ask its servers if I paid, it's gonna be better that way. That is why steam has so many users and is so good, it can handle all the drm easily, and you can still have your own server-side through your social club authentication.

Dudes, this is meant to be the biggest GTA game ever. Rockstar are open-world scientists. Thing is meant to be bigger than the original san andreas, bigger than that combined with Red Dead Redemption. It's gonna last us years.

I am just sayin, it's something I hope never happens, for detested companies such as EA to get a hold of something like GTA, even if it is just buying some exclusivity, bad enough microsoft has offers no one can refuse, hope no one like EA ever can spend like that on a third party title that they don't own themselves, never again any messed up "partners" situation.

Didn't EA try to buy Take2 (and thus R*)?

Yes. Take2 straight-up denied them.

Also, the average quality of topics on this site lowers ever day.

This thread is lol. I will refrain from insulting OP and instead I will calm his tears and wipe them away.

There is no way that GTA V will require Origin in order to be played on PC. No way in hell. Why? R* hates EA and V isn't published by EA.

In terms of digital, V will probably be on Steam (just like every recent R* game for PC) BUT I doubt it'll be a steamworks game AKA you will require Steam in order to play it.
