RandomNoun
Throwing this out: Chop's main role will be defending Franklin from close-range attackers. This seems obvious. What I mean, specifically, is that in the previews we see that Franklin fills the sniper role. If this is Franklin's speciality, and this is how we mostly play as him during missions, then perhaps Chop is simply there to watch his back, eliminating the frustration of being attacked close-range when zooming with a rifle. i.e. Chop will first alert you that an enemy is nearby by kicking up a stink, and then will automatically attack anyone who gets too close. I agree that you will be able to command Chop in general (Sic 'em, boy!), but I think his primary, and most useful, function will be guarding you whilst you're vulnerable. Jordan_Philip
That could be one thing Chop will do. But just because Rockstar said each character will have certain abilities unique to only them doesnt mean thats all they do. The characters will not be as restricted as some are predicting

The characters will not be as restricted as some are predicting Oh yeah, I agree. But I think we're going to see a lot of the dynamic set up in the preview--and that's why Rockstar demoed that particular mission. I'm personally hoping for that kind of consistency with the heists and how the story plans them out. But of course, things rarely go to plan. straightandfast
He will chase people and attack them to protect Franklin. That's probably about it. I hope he doesn't die. I will hate Rockstar if they kill Chop.
JupiterSound
I don' think Chop will really have that much of a combat role in missions..If he's even IN any missions. I mean, if he gets killed, will you fail the mission because of that? I think to be an active part of the missions, he'd either have to be invincible, which is kind of unrealistic, or you would have to fail the mission if he dies, which would be annoying. So I don't know. I guess we'll have to wait and see in September, but my guess is that he's mostly in the game just as a part of Franklin's story. DarkDayz
Chop will be more of a story character than everyone is expecting, that's my only opinion and if so, being pretty confident about that theory I'm glad he is so and not just be used for attacking/defending purposes. I think the possibility of Chop dying will be a vital part of the turning of Franklin and his story arch, if Rockstar are brave enough to kill a dog in a modern idium anyway. yonatan755
I think he wont be with Franklin on missions, only on free roam. if you are in a shotout he will probebly bark and sit in a corner.
BoyzNGroveStreet
I just hope he doesnt interfere if you're in a shootout with police, gangs or something, during non-mission things. That would be annoying. e_e But i'm sure we will have control on if hes with you or not.

This^ Can't stop laughing at that. OT: I hope that Chop isn't killed simply because we are expecting it. I want to be able to cruise around with Chop all the time and do whatever I feel like(attacking people mostly). I really hope there is commands for him like: Attack, Flank(To chase people out from behind cover), Chase(When I don't feel like running after someone), and I don't know Piss On I guess. zainzombie
Im expecting atleast 1 side activity (of Franklin) that involves Chop. Maybe like someone once "leaked" Franklin and Chop doing patrol missions ala RDR's Nightwatch.
UberVIIX
Maybe Chop will have a voice actor for his 'inner thoughts'. You know, like "damn, I would eat some meat today". Chops back story... (Imagine deep raspy movie trailer voice) Meet Chop. a 3 year old full blooded rottweiler. He was born into a dog fighting ring and once his owner got arrested, he and his mother were split up. Chop went into a deep depression, which turned him into a killer he ate anything that moved. Chop had given up the will to live and missed his mother more and more every day. Then out of the blue, Franklin adopted him on the very day the was scheduled to be put down. To chop, Franklin might as well have been a living god. Chop found compassion in Franklin, and vowed to always protect him and stop killing cats and squirrels unless provoked (but still hated them on the inside).... If anyone can pull off a realistic attachment to a digital pet companion, it's Rockstar. The horses in RDR were so well realized, that I actually felt some emotional attachment to my first one. I actually kept the horse you first break, right up until the Mexico portion of the game. Everytime it died, I'd reload my last save. Fable 2 & Fallout 3 had canine companions, but I never got attached to them in the same way. I can see I'm going to be very protective of Chop. I wonder I you can unlock a canine companion in online multiplayer? Maybe you can choose one from all the different breeds in the game.
