GTA IV is the worst PC port of all time

Question

3rr0r

Hello folks,

Iam here to once again rage a little bit on this optimization thread.

GTA IV is a game which is almost 5 years old now. And still, yes, still hasn't been optimized.

I remember buying this game and the EFLC expansion on day one when they were released for PC.

I remember the game had quite a lot of bugs and optimizations issues, I played it on medium settings on my computer back then (C2D 8500 ~ 4.06 GHz, 8800 512 gts updated to nvidia 295 GTX in 2010, 8 GB ram and win 7 64bit ). Even then I was experiencing a lot of stuttering , but I finished the game and both expansions with almost 90% completition on all of them (I never quite managed to get all those pigeons and the other collectibles in those two expansions)

But I was having fun nevertheless, despite that utterly bad optimization.

And now after 3 years I finally managed to buy a new very high end computer, the specs are as follows

MB: Asus Maximus V Formula

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K ~ 4.6 GHz

GPU: Gigabyte GTX670OC-2GD SLI

RAM: 4x4 GB Kingston 2133 Mhz DDR3

SC: SB X-Fi Titanium Champion

OS: Windows 7 ultimate x64

SSD: 240 GB C4 crucial

And after installing the game on the pc I was disgusted by the performance, I mean with everything maxed out I only get around 50 fps with fps drops to unpayable 30 or 25 fps...

Vastly frustrated I uninstalled it immediatelly afterwards and the one thing left was a sharp and sour feeling of helplessness...

I was very pissed off at the decision made by rockstar not to announce the new GTA V for PC, but now Iam happy, because we won't be getting this same unoptimized garbage on PC again and I won't be disappointed and disillusioned as I was with GTA IV, don't get me wrong fellas, I still rate this game very high on my personal top10 list.

I apologize for the long text, but hopefully somebody will read it and endorse it.

Iam off to play some Max Payne 3 and Tomb Raider, two recent games that are actually beautifully optimized and nicely ported on PC with dx11 effects and all the goodies that we , the PC folk like.

Thank you for the space to express my frustration and I bid you farewell in your endeavours icon14.gif

You've got to be employed by Rockstar or willfully blind to claim that GTA IV isn't poorly optimized. You *never* get a stable 30 fps on any setup, it fluctuates between 15 and 40 fps for me (I have an i3 2120 @ 3.3 GHz, 12 GB of RAM and a GTX 670 GPU; which beats almost anything that was out when the game was released) and you trying to fob things off on things like "slow hard drives" is ridiculous; I've got a 3 TB Seagate 7200 RPM unit, which is almost as quick as conventional hard drives get, and it has plenty of space free (the OS runs off of a SSD). WAY too many people have the same issue for you to fob it off on bad drivers, corrupted/messy Windows, etc. Also, that wall of text hurt my eyes.

I don't think it wasn't not badly optimized... if it were, shadows would've been easier to render, or overall, the minimum specs required would've been able to play it.

If you get the minimum specs, and bump everything to the lowest settings, I think the game experience will be bad alone...

Congratulations! You won the prize for the most double negatives ever in one sentence!

Saints Row 2 is probably the worst PC port of all time. GTA IV has nothing on that game.

Stop it with Saints Row 2, please. I think GTA IV does pretty well with the record. Speak about ultra computers not running it well even to this very day.

We're talking about GTA IV only of course... if it were for the worst PC ports, there are millions, not just SR2.

Rockstar has not cancelled the PC Version, they are shipping it in mid 2014 or later and maybe they made it so late so they could prepare a better optimization.

HOPE

I do agree mate, SR2 ?? With the Damn Driving Controls? I press the direction key for say 1-2 seconds and my car turns around . !!

your settings are too high for that configuration

Likely GTA was ported to the consoles last, but since RS wants to sell those games in lower fidelity off first, they only show those at first launch.

I found your idea very interesting, because i do know that they rockstar/take2 are deliberately not saying they will do a PC version because people like me are waiting for it. and yeah, saints row 2 PC was awful, its why i haven't bought a saints row game since

worst PC port is Scarface hands down... cant even run it without specifically setting a multicore computer to use a single core... and the controls are f*cked and unchangable

Runs pretty great on my setup, all settings maxed, 6060 x 1200 res, just a single 680 4gb

Are you using ENB or Utlimate Graphic Tweak or something else?

Savegames are compatible with all versions.

Even if you use XLiveLess at first and then remove it?

I cannot decide whether play the game on patch 1.0.4.0. (runs smooths) or 1.0.7.0. (got randoms crashes while playing with high graphics). the thing is that I would like my stats to be recorded on the RGSC but still if I can't play it well with the lastest patch, it truly sucks. On what patch do you guys plays? what are you using? Xliveless? mods? I would like to know. Thanks.

Look on the bright side. III, VC, and SA were bad ports in their time too. Nowadays people have no problem running them. It's only a matter of time until modern hardware has no problem running IV.

QUOTE (luceberg @ Saturday, Apr 20 2013, 21:50) It is not possible to get a stable framerate in this game because the amount happening varies continuously. To my eyes, a framerate over 30 and mostly higher looks fluid. I don't ask more than that.

Well then you should consider playing on console, we, the PC community enjoy flawless and rather fluid gameplay, fps around 120 with our 144 Hz monitors...

30 fps on a PC is unplayable, try playing the new most wanted on 30 fps or some fps for that matter, far cry 3 or crysis 3 on 30 fps on PC, it is unplayable.

You have a valid great point there, dude, It's better than going out and buying an extra PS3 just to jailbreak it and mod this game too.

So If you want to mod GTA IV for the PS3 it's not really worth it, There is a bigger chance that you'll get console banned.

While on the PC You will most likely NOT get caught or banned. (Highly doubt the fact they would)

I'm new hear so I don't know how to reply but 3rr0r you realize that you cant see above 60 fps so whats the point in begging over that. Its like asking to see an object move but you say that's not fluid enough so you want more, even though its 60 fps but when an object moves at 100 fps for you your like "that's better" although you don't notice a difference. Its just the numbers that you like.

This game is just poorly optimised. M8 you should be lucky getting 25 fps with this poorly optimised garbage.

BTW: I found Sims 3 to be more poorly optimized, in that game you can't even click without lagging on i7 5600K, GTX 1080 Ti, 64 GB of ram.

I just found this topic and yes, I run GTA 4 on Windows 8.1 (64-bit), Intel i7 4790K (base clock = 4.4GHz), 16GB DDR3 RAM, 4GB VRAM (AMD Radeon R9 380), 1TB SSD. I took extensive notes during the re-install of this game as many changes were necessary, too many to document here. But I also use a no-DVD launcher because even though I own a legitimate DVD/boxed version, I had issues launching the game without it (I still must insert DVD1 to run and to play the game).

But it was worth the hassle, because jusing XLiveLess and GTA 4 patched from vanilla/v1.0 to v1.0.4.0, I achieve good fps (I estimate from 30-50fps, sometimes slightly higher and rarely a bit lower).

Did you manage to get it to run on W8.1 then?

I'm not sure about "the worst PC port of all time", but it's very bad, yeah.
However, this is still one of most influencing games which I ever played, and I want to buy a powerfull pc in the near future, just to plat this game in 4K (to be honest, I don't really care about 4K, but in case with no AA in IV, it's needed) and with 60+ fps
I look on configuration like this:

● GPU: GeForce RTX 2060 6GB

● CPU: Intel Core i7-9700KF

● Motherboard: ASRock Z390

● PSU: MODECOM VOLCANO 750W 120mm 80 Plus

● RAM: HyperX DDR4-3333 16384MB

● SSD: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 250GB

● Display: 23.8" LG UltraFine 24UD58-B

The human eye can physiologically detect up to 1000 frames per second. The average human, tasked with detecting what framerate he/she is looking at, can accurately guess up to around 150 fps. That is, they can see the difference in framerates all the way to 150 fps
