Survival Mode

We know that in GTA V there will be dynamic encounters. Let's assume (or maybe hope) that some of these should put the player in danger. Muggings, hijackings, shark attacks. Things like this should happen occasionally, not so often that it becomes annoying, but often enough that you begin to think twice before you go swimming with a bloody shirt or casually stroll through an alley in the ghetto at 00:00. Let's take the mugging idea as an example.

You're casually strolling through an alleyway when suddenly 4 armed goons emerge from the shadows and demand your cash. The key thing here is that you're in, what I now dub, a Point Blank Scenerio. This means that if you try to run/pull out a weapon the goons will pull the trigger and you'll fall to the ground immediately, dead. In Point Blank Scenarios, NPC's don't shoot like mentally challenged gibbons, as they do in normal gameplay.

So now that we have set the scene, you are given 4 choices.

1. Run and die.

2. Draw your weapon and die.

3. Agree to give up your money, lie on the ground, lose $200-$1000, leave unscathed, turn off the console, go cry in the shower because you got your wimp ass owned by some NPCs in f*cking GTA.

4. Enter Survival Mode.

What is this "Survival Mode?" Basically what happens is that buttons flash up on the screen and you have to hit them in order to survive. For the mugging scenario something like this will happen if you get it right: (Watch up to 00:25.)

Now it doesn't have to be something as 'Hollywood' as this scene here with our friend Jason, but you get the idea.

If you mess it up, you die. If you don't, well then imagine how much of a badass you'll feel when your attackers are down.

Survival Mode should be linked to your fighting skill (hoping that stats like this return). The higher your stat, the slower the buttons flash (making it easier for you).

Survival Mode can also apply to shark attacks and other life threatening scenarios and, of course, to the police. Let's face it, the police in GTA are rubbish. I haven't been arrested in a GTA game in ELEVEN years, this was when I was a wee 8 year old playing GTA for the first time. It is mildly annoying how you can just stroll away from the police when they have you at point blank range in GTA IV, resulting in merely two hits from bullets. No no. I want a fight. I want the police to tackle me, set the dogs on me and not be fat f*cks like in GTA IV, but I digress. I want something like Survival Mode to kick in when the police are after me. It should be a challenge trying to fight back when a cop is trying to pin you down or when a police dog is trying to munch your arm. However, the police shouldn't magically know where you are and when you commit a crime if they aren't in the area and they certainly shouldn't come after you for EVERY little bumper bashing a la GTA IV. But when they're after you, you should be in for a fight.

This flashing buttons thing could really make hand to hand combat in GTA V feel like real fighting, something that has always been lacking in GTA. It should give you an adrenaline rush knowing that your life depends on you pushing all the buttons in time. This doesn't mean that the classic, random arm-swinging, fighting will be done away with. Survival Mode should be exclusive to dynamic encounters and police chases. Possibly also whenever the protagonist is outnumbered.

Its a cool idea but i dont think it fits in with GTA. Quicktime events are boring, staged and repetitive, especially with the frequency that you mention it should appear. I would rather actually physically fight, or just have a button for disarming people.

It won't be THAT frequent, but you'll definitely experience it on rare occasions. If you never walk through alleys you'll never experience it. If you spend all your time walking through alleys 24/7 (it's all you do in the game) maybe it'll happen once every 3 days?

I don't like that. I think there should be one scripted animation of the character breaking out, shooting one guy in the head and running to cover, then it's up to us.

Guns, guns, guns confused.gif Hand-to-hand combat needs to be improved and required more often.

It could work but that system isn't really GTA imo... maybe it goes into slow-mo instead (like dead eye RDR) and we have to either kill them, try to dart to cover or we dead.

Quicktime events are for developers who suck off hollywood with no creativity. No, I don't want quicktime events. Try something less scripted.

I sure hope events like this happen, getting mugged, old granny get her purse snatched, sharks, drive-by. But I am not really sure about your Quicktime idea is GTA. Sure, it's pretty cool but it would become repetitive and super easy after a while. I would just give up the money.

The Driver series uses "side missions" and one is survival mode where you have to escape police [and they are crazy]. You simply try to beat your time. Once you've lost them, you've won. It's pretty fun, but it doesn't require any quicktime events.
