LotusRIP
How are people imagining mountains will work?! It's utterly insane. Yeah ok to imagine for a second that they create a mountain that's juuuuuuust a tiny bit too high for a plane or chopper (which would need to be hilariously huge and embarassing looking) but then what? What happens when you try to go around it? Think about it logically, think of how the map would LOOK. It would be incredibly stupid. RDR worked because you couldn't get more than 10 feet off the ground from any given point that you were riding/standing. This is GTA where we have heckyloppers and now planes. Mountains won't work because it'll look retarded. EDIT: And ok let's imagine the game is mountain-locked the entire way around (as if we're in a basin).. but again imagine how tall the mountains would need to be, it would be stupid and pointless, especially as we know the actual city of Los Santos has a coastline... so... what... lots of water and then BAM, huge wall? ARRGHHH stop the madness. It's a game, you're all making my brain hurt. Island. ISLAND. I never said impassable mountains...
AuSsIeThUnDeR36
LotusRIP you asked if there were references to other cities in gta games? Well yes there's been a few. Catalina said to CJ that she was going to Liberty City. In GTAIV, Roman said to Niko that he wanted them to go to Vice City. One of Niko's girlfriends, can't recall her name, said she was going to get work in Los Santos.
DODI3OG
Also, what Rockstar has been showing us is through the perspective of the protagonists. GTA 4's atmosphere was dark because Niko's story was dark as well. I'd derail this train for a while. For those who've seen this animated series, the aged couple didn't live in Nowhere. They seemed to live in Nowhere because the show was presented through a dog's perspective. A dog would never live away from his home(except when stolen), right? The empty surroundings were his boundary. Through the eyes of the Protag, the map is his home. The places shown in-game are ones that are part of the Protagonist/s home. And the seas were his/their boundary. Edited April 18, 2013 by DODI3OG
Durden
Some of V's border will be endless ocean. Some will be endless desert. Some may be really high/steep mountains that shoot an AA missile at you from the military. That's what I'm expecting, anyways.

How will Rockstar make it? Just plain desert with plants in a repeating pattern? Are you even kidding about the AA gun on the mountains? Why wouldn't you dare when you have flares with your Hydra/Fighter Jet. Edited April 18, 2013 by DODI3OG
TheQuestfor100Percent
I don't see it working any other way than an island. A huge island. Given the history of GTA, I'd say it is still an island. I know people think endless desert, but I don't think it would work. The rest of the game world is unique and highly detailed, and an endless desert wouldn't fit. Actually there will be endless desert, it will just be underwater. Sure we will have a fully detailed ocean, to a certain point, but I imagine once you swim/boat/submarine so far out the bottom of the ocean will gradually become flat. Similar to San Andreas. Well that is my prediction anyways.
Vinewood187
I think it should be this really big maze of canyons and deserts it would be endless..

Why wouldn't you dare when you have flares with your Hydra/Fighter Jet. I didn't mean impassible mountains, merely big ones that require an aircraft to overcome. And what I meant with the AA missile is that there could be a SAM site over the mountain, "watching for terrorists attempting to bomb SF/LV" or something like that. If you don't like the turret, you could get 6 stars resulting in the millitary chasing you. As for desert... Really? I don't think it's realistic to have 35 minutes of boat-driving to reach the end of IV's ocean. That's what I meant. I don't want/think there will be infinite desert/ocean, but so much that you will never know the limit until you try to test it for yourself. We're unsure about fighter jets having flares or not. No assumptions yet. Besides, maybe there will be multiple turrets, or 1 with a high fire rate. Flares will not recharge instantaneously.

The ocean floor will be part of the game's map and not just an underwater border, IMO. The details might fade away the farther you get(until it's merely sand), though. IMO, an endless ocean is much realistic. Oceans aren't supposed to have a pattern. It wouldn't look odd if it's endless. As for a desert, how will they make a DETAILED and UNIQUE, and ENDLESS desert? Shouldn't they apply detail and make the map repeating in patterns, it becomes unrealistic, it becomes a waste of disk and random access memory. gtamann123
It's called suspension of disbelief. We are supposed to ignore that the cities are islands and just imagine they are connected to the mainland. I don't get why this is so hard for people to grasp and why people look so far into it. In the GTA Universe the endless ocean technically isn't there at all and we are supposed to ignore its since it is only there to function as a map boundary. DJ Vejeejee
will there be just one big militairy base? or will there be two big ones?
kesta195
The water is an illusion that only we notice. Hypothetically, if we were characters in the game, we would see the rest of the state of SA instead of this endless ocean. It's just a more convenient way of representing the map boundaries. Personally I would have much preferred endless desert, for authenticity, but it would have been hard to pull off.

You fly over it, use boat on it. It doesnt seem like illusion to swim in a land.

Pretty much, the water is actually a way to delimit the game world, it doesn't have any actual geographical significance.
