lucid121
I played it before.Don't get me wrong it's a good game and all,but I don't understand why people praise and why it's the best selling franchise of all time.Is it the fact that it was made long time ago or something?I am very confused. Tchuck
One simple reason: It's fun. It's fun to move Mario around, it's fun to jump, it's fun to bash the enemies head, and after the 3D came about with the N64, it was also fun doing all the other cool stuff. It wasn't *made* a long time ago, it *started* a long time ago. And it's also a pretty likeable character. Might I ask, how old are you and what is your favourite game? brian.
And I am quite sure he doesn't mean "how young are you and what crap do you think is better" because I am curious as well to your round abouts age and favorite games , just for the added insight to the thread if not to help contrast what you're into. Also, what was your FIRST game? For many around my age, it was Mario, with Duck Hunt and Track and Field on the same cartridge. Although it looks silly today, mario 1 was made very well for the time. Being many people's first experience with in-home gaming and being such a well made game at the time (it was able to be considered somewhat "high detail" back then, at the time, even though games on even the same system got better with time, it was a big deal when it came out), mario is huge in our minds like mascots of many big companies out there. So, I think Mario is loved alongside Mickey, Bugs, and characters like that, as the video game mascot for many. Couple it with quality development on up through the recent games, it is an easy one for everyone to agree on and have fun playing together. It isn't too niche for one crowd or another, everyone can play mario and have some fun. I guess his popularity comes with brand, but it's also a decent series too. Which mario were you talking about as well? The original adventure? The donkey kong one before that where you jumped over barrels? New mario games on current consoles? Personally, I'm not impressed by new mario stuff, but when mario 1, 3, world, and 64 were out, they were awesome games for sure Edited April 17, 2013 by brian. Mista J
I like it because it's so simple. I play more though when I need to take a break from the more action oriented games like CoD or Battlefield.
King Of Monra
Don't play it, seriously, games are evil, specially mario. I got hooked on shrooms and I started stomping on turtles, I ate so many shrooms cause I wanted to grow too. And I jumped around in a frog costume whilst trying to ride a small fake dino at a theme park. It got really bad when I started eating flowers and putting turtles and other animals on fire. Seriously, stop playing games, it will ruin your life. ---- Play Sonic! Anyway, why do we like mario? Because it's fun? Why do we think it's fun? Because it is? And to some it isn't? I guess? El Dildo
I don't understand why people praise and why it's the best selling franchise of all time. because it was the original platform game. one of the very first ones. ever. and one of the most fun. Mario today doesn't seem like a big deal because it's so simple. but you have to understand the past. you have to understand history. Mario was revolutionary when it came out. it did things no game had done before and that almost every game has tried to copy since.

Capricornus
I am a die hard Sonic fan, and I too started out with Sonic. However, I played Mario shortly after and also fell in love with it. The games are fun, colorful, vibrant, challenging and have great humor. Its also a excellent platformer with an Iconic, diversified character. Not to mention, the Mario games also have excellent soundtracks, like Sonic games.
Master of San Andreas
Because it's fun, simple and quite addictive. I used to play a lot out of Mario on my NES , Those were the days man, I couldn't get past the first level If I remember correctly I got past it only once. Mario is cool and all but any Sonic fans here? Sonic ftw.

Daz
Jesus, you are only a few years older than my GTAF account. But honestly, if you look at all the other games out back then, it just pissed on them all, it was also due to really solid mechanics and nothing about the game was glitchy or broken and it made sense, easy to pick up. Not to mention a NES just made gaming so much easier and was the family console, so practically everyone ended up with a mario game at some point if they liked it or not, it was just bought for people and the console mainly just came with the game. Though the original Super Mario Bros is great, it is only really Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World that I consider the best out of the lot. So much detail and features in those games it is insane. Knowing secrets or cheats within these games had to be done by having a friend come round your house and show you. It was a good game for playing with your mates.
CryptReaperDorian
What Daz said. If you have NOT played either Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World (I generally prefer the latter, especially since the former is almost too easy), then you're doing yourself quite an injustice and a disservice. Even by today's standards, those are top-notch platformer games with a huge amount of replay value. They are also significant commercial successes. Super Mario World has sold roughly the same amount of copies as GTA SA and GTA IV (over 25,000,000).

As for the Wii? Nintendo titles are always among the best selling titles on Nintendo platforms. Besides, the Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. games are quite good, but they still probably don't hold the nostalgia of games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World. The Pizza Delivery Guy
The main reason is because it's marketed perfectly. There's great development time between games, and when released are high quality. Another is because of how it was the first good game in the 80s during the dark ages of gaming when everything that could get produced in a week would be released in the next. (Refer to the Angry Video Game Nerd) I never saw the appeal in it. Mario World is what I played and it was really slow paced. Maybe being a Sonic fan has affected my views on Mario. El Dildo
The thing I still can't understand is:why is it selling so much on wii? because Wii is marketed as a family console with games that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Mario is perfect for that.

Tchuck
The thing I still can't understand is:why is it selling so much on wii? Because it sold a lot on the NES, then sold a lot on the SNES, then sold a lot on the N64, then sold a lot on the GameCube, then sold a lot on the Wii, and then it will sell a lot on the WiiU. Does that make sense to you? It's called a series for a reason. Why does CoD sell a lot every year? Why did Mass Effect sell a lot every release? Mario has a huge fan following that has been building for over 2 decades now. That is quite a long time, and quite a lot of people. Do you still not understand why it will always sell a lot? Dick Valor
People like Mario because Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 are two of the greatest games ever created and were easily the GTA of the glorious NES era (my first system). After that, I moved on to Sonic 1 and 2 with Sega Genesis, then to Metal Gear Solid with PlayStation, and never went back to Nintendo or platformers in general. Tbh, I couldn't give a f*ck about Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, etc... The second Mario and Sonic went 3D and started having voices/sounds, the characters lost most of their charm. trip
The NES was the re-birth of gaming after the crash in the 80s. It was huge. Mario was the game that came with it. It makes sense that Mario would leave as large a mark as the NES itself. NES with Mario: Replaced the dead Atari2600 and it's graphics that looked like this: The difference in gameplay and graphics was freaking mind blowing.
