Talon724
We know GTA V will be more detailed and that the map will be bigger than New Austin & Mexico (Red Dead Redemption) , San Andreas' & GTA IV's map combined. Despite many people still can't realize this is extremely huge, many doubters seem to be stuck in ther black-white-thinking, like: San Andreas was a whole state with 3 different cities and lots of desert and countryside. But if you take a closer look, it's more illusion than reality. Los Santos in San Andreas was damn small. Yes, the whole San Andreas map was small. Load your save game where all areas are unlocked and try to travel to Fierro or Venturas. It takes a damn short time. And what is there to do? Most buildings are closed. Casinos in Venturas are clones. Many smaller towns offer nothing. GTA V's Los Santos will be a fully fleshed out city with lots of opportunities. We also have a beautiful landscape, deserts and Blaine county, which will be more vivid than San Andreas' little towns with nothing to do.

Argon
I recently fired up SA again, because it was ages since I played it (storywise), and to be honest, there is a lot of missions and storytelling that I didn't really remember. But one thing I noticed: it was no way near as big as I remembered. Mainly because I used to play it on PS2, with it's very low drawing distance. Now I can actually see San Fierro from LS woods, and I can see the desert from San Fierro. Also, there are a lot of small towns and areas where it just feels empty. But that is, ofcourse, by today's standards. GTAV will feel big, due to being filled with stuff. Didn't really need its own thread, there are already tons of size comparison threads.. Distrom
SA is big but it´s not that huge, de distance from Willowfield (south LS) to the center of Las Venturas is Aprox. the distance from Castle gardens to Northwood.

ALeSsAnDrO
Nobody says the SA map is huge. If you want a huge world, go play Daggerfall. But it is extremely varied and well balanced. It makes you want to explore it. I'm sure V will be better, and, more specifically, look a lot better.
AuSsIeThUnDeR36
Well anyone with half a brain would already know gta v is 'Bigger than San Andreas, RDR and gta IV with room to spare' and yeah it's not going to be San Andreas II. No CJ in this or Tommy Vercetti. It's new era, no III era characters returning.

I've put over 100hrs into JC2 and can tell you that's not true at all. It takes about 5-6 minutes to fly across the map in one of the prop planes, a little less if you use one of the fighters, and a lot less in that little batwing looking thing you can buy from the black market dealer. LotusRIP
OP, you do realise that measurement included all interiors + underwater areas? If you take this into consideration, the map won't be quite as large as you probably think, but it'll be huge for sure... certainly big enough. Yeah, I understand that, but I don't quite know how to work it out. Is it more like Volume? Or something? How exactly do Rockstar work that out? It's never taken me any more than 5-6min(give or take 30 seconds) to get from one end of the map to the other in any plane. I don't say that insultingly either, very few games can make similar claims about their maps, and I doubt V's map will take more than a 60-90 seconds to cross in a fighter for comparison. DarkDayz
F* Fuel. We have seen more detail in the 80 screenshots of GTA V than there is on this insanely oversized and underdetailed map. Like IV, when on street level, what looks to be a small map from above will look completely different and full of detail. Ever been on a flight and been took back from how surprisingly small the city you flew out of looks, despite it being massive, yes.

I played it for relaxation, though. The boredom just made me sleep sometimes when I play FUEL.

You only think so because it's divided in these areas, Santos, Fierro, Venturas, desert and landscape. Not really, San Andreas is indeed the biggest map that Rockstar Games has ever created. You just have to compare the sizes of all Rockstar titles with each other, which you can do with ingame measurements and there are a lot of different methods of how to do it. I and some other people of this forum have made some of those measurements and if we consider the official statements then that is how the map sizes of the games look like: • GTA San Andreas - 13.9 square miles • Red Dead Redemption - 11-12 square miles, but only 6 square miles of it can be explored • L.A. Noire - 8 square miles • GTA IV - 6.25 square miles • GTA Vice City 3.9 square miles • GTA III - 3 square miles GTA San Andreas is still the Rockstar title with the by far biggest map to date. Only GTA V can change that. GTAForums Crew Chat Thread - The Sharks Chat Thread - Leone Family Mafia Chat Thread

I also took the space around that island. The SA map is 1,5x the size of that island. JC is 32 by 32km and San andreas 4x4 km so its perfectly to scale. and i know JC2 is not better than SA and i know its less detailed and Fuel is even less detailed but f*ck, its f*cking huge

Or take RDR.Biggest map my ass. Counting the amount of time it takes you to travel from one point of the map to another one and comparing it between two games that use two totally different engines is very inaccurate and I would not recommend it. Just for the record, I'm not saying that San Andreas is bigger because I like it more, it's a fact to be exact (and I prefer GTA IV by the way so you couldn't call me a "San Andreas fangirl"). GTA San Andreas is twice as big than Liberty City. GTAForums Crew Chat Thread - The Sharks Chat Thread - Leone Family Mafia Chat Thread
