CaptainCapri
Hi guys, I'm not sure if there is already a topic for this... But i'm interested to know how much the story means to you? Do you buy the game specifically for the storyline, is it the part of the game you are most eagerly waiting for, is it something you will complete before free roaming? etc.. etc... I have never really been bothered with the GTA storylines I simply buy the game for the fun free roam factor, of course I complete the storyline but for me this is a small part of the game! DODI3OG
GTA V won't be GTA V without the story. So, Yes, it's very important.
Cymru1991
From my point of view, the story is VERY important- I'm a sucker for the GTA humour and love playing through the story slowly (watching all the cutscenes etc etc) to make sure that I actually know what is going on. Of course the massive free-roam factor and all the additional bits-and-bobs are very important too, but in general I'd say that the actual core story ranks pretty highly in my books

Eminence E.
Storyline is the main factor I love in GTA games following the free roam factor.
Andreas
The story is definitely one of the most important things of every GTA game in my opinion and the same is the case with V. For me, it's fairly as important as free roaming, but then again, it really depends on how the game is in general. The story in GTA IV was more important than free roaming, and the importance equals in the forthcoming GTA game because of the multiple protagonists system and the huge gameworld that has a lot of variety. GTA wouldn't be this what it is if it wouldn't have a storyline! bowling...?
The story is the most important thing to me. It has to keep me playing. GTA IV wouldn't be as good wihout it's story but it would still be fun.
BlackNoise
I guess it means a lot, but I only remember VC's story. I was just playing IV and I already forgot what was going on. The free roam offers much more gameplay for me, so I would say it's much more important than the story IMO. Simply put, I would rather get GTA with free roam and no story, than a GTA with a story and no free roam. But I'm glad we get both, and I think GTA V will have the most interesting(hopefully memorable) story ever.

InternetKillTV
For me story is a lot of what makes GTA a game. If there was no story there'd no way in hell I'd be following the franchise. The Houser's writing is always on top form their games. They make their experiences not just fun gameplay wise but emotional. I am almost always emotionally invested in characters by the end of a GTA. GTA V looks to be no different, in fact the story is most intriguing. I cannot wait to see the character dynamic between Michael, Franklin and Trevor. On top of that I am so excited to see just how Michael's family play into it. We've never had a family dynamic like this in the franchise. Aaaah I can't wait! Story is what gets me to play it over and over, I'm on my 15th run through of GTA IV. Gameplay is just as massive though. If those missions aren't fun and crazy then it takes away some replay value for me. Although obviously in the long run it's the freeroam that keeps me coming back years on end to explore the game would be nothing for me without the story. Shoumaker
The story is easily one the most fundamental aspects in any Grand Theft Auto game if not the most important. Since this has been the case for every GTA game so far V will be no different. You can't have a good GTA game without a good story, one might argue San Andreas might have a bad story but I'm not here to discuss that as I liked the story actually. And Brian is right. It actually depends on how the game is in general. GTA Tgobt was a game mainly based on the Action element and I feel free roaming was made more important especially due to the Base jumps around the map. Most GTA games get boring after completing the story and that's only because the story is the most important element of the game and without it GTA wouldn't be GTA anymore. ShadowDog94
I've never found any GTA storyline particularly good, and I feel that the story is usually quite vague and goes nowhere. They are all quite similar with the rags-to-riches theme, however this one seems different. I'm definitely interested this time, however I will still take my time with the story and just do stuff in free roam. MARKUS.
It's something very important to me... But I hope that they keep a mature storyline like GTA IV this time, they did it great. I think that the movie Heat (1995) could be an important inspiration for R* when they did the storyline Edited April 15, 2013 by Markhosdangerous
Grand Theft Savage
For me, the story is the second most important thing in a video game, the first being gameplay of course. That's why I avoid story spoilers as much as possible.
Freezer89
Well, it's a huge part of the game but it definitely isn't the most important aspect. Especially with a map like San Andreas. I probably will drive around for hours before continuing the storyline. Also the stories in GTA games weren't that super great. They were good, that's about it. Not comparable with other storylines like Bioshock (Infinite). I even kinda disliked the story in GTA IV (towards the end).
Revolution-XW
Let's be honest and THINK. It depends on what the story is about, who and how, imo. If the MP seems very fun and excites me, it'll be my priority over the story. But the story is always the main target of the creators, therefore, it has to be very important. Though, it doesn't mean MP can't be better.
BUT THE BENZ
Whoa....great thread! Unexpected... Story is definitively important. Very much so. R* sure knows how to tell a story though (cutscene epicness) so I'm very optimistic for V. Gameplay, Story, Audio, Visuals...in that order...right now....sometimes I REALLY dig graphics as they make everything better when they're looking good...but they're not important really
Habs
It's all about the story according to me... When I learned that the storyline is based on a few heists I was so f*cking ecstatic because I'm such a fan of everything that is linked to robberies. Heists + GTA = Wow. Once I'm done with the storyline I'm replaying the storyline 5-6 times at least... After that I'm roleplaying. I know R* said there's no big DLC such as TLAD/TBOGT coming out that was such a disappointment... I mean, the next GTA is going to be in like 6-7 years if they start from scratch once again, I can't wait that long.

Druffmaul
I guess the story is pretty important to me. I've always felt like an oddball among the GTA fanbase, because I've never spent a lot of time just running around in the games doing sh*t for no reason. I find that really, really boring. I play a lot of GTA, but for me it generally means starting a new game, beating all of the missions until I finish the story. I've played all of the GTAs several times. And occasionally it changes my viewpoint. e.g. The first time I played through GTA IV, I really hated Niko and Roman. I thought they were too over the top and silly, they were annoying and I couldn't take them seriously. But over time as I replayed through the game, they grew on me. I got used to their goofy nasally accents and they started to seem more like regular people. After a while they became some of my all time favorite game characters. Dick Valor
Story ------> 50%Freeroam -> 50% This Agreed. A good story gives the free roam activities weight and meaning. I love working for Roman at the beginning of IV in an effort to help the family business, or helping out Little Jacob and Brucie. The free roam relates to the character and the story, mutually enriching each other. The experience is cohesive and beautiful. By contrast, Saints Row side missions have little purpose and feel like meaningless grinds. They have no connection to the paper thin story, which makes the world and the overall sandbox experience ring false. Of course, it's not the story that makes the game either. L.A. Noire has a great story but a weak world that feels like an empty set with nothing to do. This makes the characters feel less real to me... like Phelps has no life beyond the story. It's all about balance.
Racecarlock
Story is definitely important to me, as long as they don't gut the gameplay like a fish for it. GTA IV did that and as a result jumping giant gorges on ATVS was replaced with darts.

Well since Next-Gen consoles are guaranteed for holiday 2013, Rockstar is going to have a huge relief as it's mostly PC based architecture now, so it will be so much easier now, so i'd say 3-5 years mostly unless they want to go all out with the future games.
