I just want to ram my head against a brick wall in response to how many times I've heard people's thoughts on fan fiction over the years.

Simply put: It's a GTA forum with a writer's subforum. People will read GTA fan fiction or Dr. Who fan fiction or Fallout fan fiction or any type of fan fiction because it's something they're familiar with and can get. It's the only reason my current story is remotely fan fiction. I wouldn't even say it's fan fiction. The only fan fiction thin about it is that I've mentioned Vice once and it's set in Liberty City, but I don't even mention it often enough. It could just as easily be New York, but I know people are more inclined to read something that may be GTA based than something original. Because that's what a video game based forum attracts, people who like video games. If you guys are really adamant against fan fiction, join a forum based around writing where people write original prose and such. I posted my fair share of originals here, and they usually never lasted too long due to a combination of people not really following and therefore disheartening me from continuing. Fan fictions are read because you're familiar with the universe of it already and will be better able to follow it. The mental pictures of characters are already there. That's what I think, anyways. It's for people who don't really feel like creating something and just rehashing other people's successful work. I may even just switch all the locations in my story to their real life counterparts to avoid the whole fan fiction label. All my characters are original, the plot is original, it's really the fact that I'm in Liberty City that makes it GTA related.

I'm not adamant against it or anything (honest tounge.gif), the thing that tires me is the endless waxing lyrical about it from all parties. It's the same old rehashed conversation over and over, with each side making the same points (not saying I'm innocent of this, by any means).

I just find it weird the way the conversation creeps up again every few pages... between the same people. As though the point hasn't already been made.

This may sound oh so very hypocritical, considering I brought it up on the previous page, but that's neither here nor there. ph34r.gif

Just strikes me as odd that people find it necessary to keep tight hold of that crutch, so much so that they try and shoehorn any original ideas they do have into the framework of fan-fiction. I mean, if you're writing about GTA and you enjoy writing about GTA, knock yourself out. But Shakespeare? His work is already ripe for parallels, homages... you name it. You can merge your own creativity with adaptation. But to specifically ape the work that's already been done, it's just...

Here we go again, waxing lyrical. Someone shoot me in the head, please.

How about a subject change?

Anybody got any good stories up their sleeves?

Seriously. This FanFiction stuff is getting repetitive and I keep repeating myself.

I've been trying to form this idea for a story I've got lately. Can't really decide how I'll do it though. I've rewritten the first half of it four times. I kind of really hate when that happens.

Also, I had this one-off idea I never finished but I might as well plug it here: basically it was a story told from the perspective of a budding journalist, as he watched Las Vegas get taken over by Kanye West and his legions. Then Kanye renames the place as a new Rome and begins his age of conquest. I planned to throw in a lot of references to Vegas, music, history and the lot. Thing is when you have that much lined up you just realize you're not nearly good enough to put it all together fluently. Hah.

The phrase 'Get it written, then get it right' gets thrown around alot. Why not just get a simple narrative in your mind. Write it up to the BEST you can, and then tinker with it until you feel it's fluent enough?

I'm trying it that way...It's not so bad. I'm almost 20,000 words into Somebody Else's Mess (Yes, a FanFiction that I believe isn't just your rehashed generic sh*t that we've seen lately -even if that stupid sh*t wins awards- and I'm going in a different direction) and I'm 15,000 words into Is It Possible. (Not a FanFiction).

Got a narrative spin-off/sequel from my Legacy gamescript in mind. Got the first chapter done -- just figuring out the middle and end before I continue. happy.gif Should be set around a year or so after the game ends and will feature around 12 chapters.

So shameless plug, whoever hasn't realized it yet, the script's done! Go comment on that bitch and read the final missions and shiiit! moto_whistle.gif

Since we're on the subject of new ideas, I had an idea for something set in the Old West. Inspired by Red Dead Redemption, but NOT based off of it.

Either that or an "Eastern", essentially a Western-style story, but set in Russia during the Revolution and the subsequent Russian Civil War in the 1910's and 1920's. There were several of these "Easterns" made in Russian cinema throughout the Soviet period, and I've seen a few subtitled in English, and they're pretty good.

That sounds fresh, I'd give that a read - my only advice is be patient, get your research done, and don't try to rush it just to get it uploaded, take as long as it takes smile.gif

The Nonsense God was an awesome piece. I'd love to read the folklore, mythology, and history of a junk metropolis. Sounds like an awesome idea to me.

This has been on my mind for some time.

Is it possible to write a complete movie script and post it in the WD?

I think it'll be kind of difficult to read the whole thing but it also could be a nice long read to kill time and such.

I'm thinking about remaking The Black Cat but in a whole movie then to a weekly series.

Any opinion on the subject?

I don't see why not. The difficulty will be with formatting it; you could get a close approximation by centering the dialogue and such, but it's not going to be perfectly formatted or anything.

To be honest, the best way to do it might be to just format it in Fountain. It'd still be readable, and if people wanted they'd be able to load it into some software and it'd format it for them.

Alas, all this is beside the point if you've only just come up with the idea... you're getting ahead of yourself by thinking of the delivery mechanism.

Nobody here would be low enough to steal some of your ideas off you if you're worried. We've still got our dignity. There's only one name that comes to mind when I think of writers who would willingly steal ideas and reap the rewards. And considering said moron is pertaining his essence to the V forum, it's quite alright to keep your ideas on the table. But then again, choice is choice. I'd like to read that story bible of yours if you ever get around to it.

Well, when it's done and published - I'll be sure to send you a link smile.gif

It's going well, but still in its infancy. Not even finished the first draft.

One idea I'm playing with is the concept of a son succeeding his father. The father is a hero - but this heroism and subsequent praise leads to the son becoming lazy, surrounded by flatterers and detatched from reality.

It's funny, because I've been doing a lot of research about real life people to give me ideas for these animal characters. This son is largely based on a very unpleasant fellow known as Ramfis Trujillo - the son of Dominican tyrant Rafael Trujillo. Never heard of him? Let's take a trip back in history!

He was the "famous" son that El Jefe made a colonel at the age of four and a brigadier general at the age of nine. He was known, affectionately, as Lil' F*ckface. As an adult, Ramfis was known for being a polo player, a f*cker of North American actresses, a squabbler with his father and a frozen-hearted demon with a Humanity Rating of 0 who personally directed the indiscriminate torture-murders of 1959 and 1961.

In a secret report filed by the US Consul, Ramfis was described as an "imbalanced" young man who, in his childhood, amused himself by blowing the heads of chickens with a .44 revolver.

Ramfis fled the country, lived dissolutely off his fathers swag, and ended up dying in a car crash of his own devising in 1969. The other car he hit contain the Duchess of Albuquerque, Teresa Beltran de Lis, who died instantly.

Lil' F*ckface went on murdering right to the end.

He was a truly fascinating figure, whilst some in his country still praise his father due to his economic successes - his son is mostly remembered as a lunatic. He swanned around Hollywood and would return back to his palace to machine-gun prisoners from his balcony. If any of you ever need inspiration - look to the past! The history books are the greatest resource available to writers of fiction.

I have had such a hard week with tests at school and rewriting most of Vice and planning 18 Months. I have a quick question, how far is too far, what is the line between good and offensive?

Offensive is in the eye of the beholder. It's subjective really. Everybody's got their tastes.

People who get offended by literature are not worth considering, pandering to or respecting.

Be as 'offensive' as you want to be, you are your only judge.

A character in 18 Months, imagine Trevor but on a much crazier level, this guy is a cannibal/ rapist/ serial killer. He was supposed to be a target for the hitmen, but is that too far or does the idea that he gets killed make it less far?

I believe I was being a little bit generic with the last post. Allow me to elaborate.

I have to agree with Typhus. If you are offended by text-based descriptive prose, you're obviously a softie. Make him more evil. Make us hate him. Make us WANT to see him die in a fiery pit. Justify it. And be as offensive as you want. If it ends up hitting somebody's nerve. You've only affected somebody emotionally in a different way.

Thanks for the advice, I just want the story to be emotional aswell as crazy, having deep scenes to make you almost cry but then other scenes to make you fall off your chair laughing. I fear that it might be hard. sad.gif

Of course it's going to be hard. Giggity. However the more you read, the more you write, the more you open yourself up to emotion, the more you develop.

You don't have to read young adult books like you can't understand other books. Try reading some Stephen King, or maybe some Raymond Chandler. Not every novel is complicated- some are, but not all.

Also, I've got another part of Somebody Else's Mess up if anybody wants to go take a quick gander.

The Stand was mentioned earlier, I might try that next. smile.gif Im gonna look at the sample although on Google Play Books, the sample is usually just authors notes and one page of the intro. sad.gif

Im really enjoying the Percy Jackson book, I expected just another sh*tty Harry Potter rip off but its not, it has some reimagining of greek mythology aswell and the story is just becoming too interesting to leave alone.
