Map Size Thread

I'm just watching this thread and eating popcorn. It's turned from an interesting heated debate to... expert mapping? You can't determine the size of Los Santos compared to Liberty City by comparing their blocks. Blocks are different on the west coast compared to the east coast. I thought some people who are map experts would know that.

The roads in Los Angeles and blocks are curvier, sometimes big. The ones in New York are just plain squares after squares. Nothing comparable here, you're just going to get inaccurate results. Stick to comparing the draw distance or something...

Shaking my head at the "experts" in here lol...

So, you are an "expert"?

Obviously more than you or Choco Taco, who can't seem to comprehend one of the most obvious mythbusters in this whole thread haha...

I can see where this is going..

Nothing is coming out of this discussion. There are a few, like you, who at least do an attempt to prove us wrong. Then there is the RDF.

Just in case anyone is wondering, here are two interesting images:

In the first picture, look how big the distance from the West Hollywood (Red) building to the observatory (above the Green rectangle) actually is. I'd say it's a bit smaller than that from the W.H. to the city center.

Now look at the second picture. See how perspective distorts everything? Just look how close the W.H. looks to the observatory.

Basically, this:

This will just be ignored by the map is small crowd. Ive never though the observatory shot was a great shot because the fact it's on a. Hill makes it look like its closer to downtown than it really is. But no one cares and thinks it irrelevant.

Yeah. Releasing the observatory picture opened up the Pandora's box to trolls because it have them, what they thought was, evidence.

Knew it, it was the Low FOV that was giving us an illusion, LS is indeed very big.

Here's the series of events (that I knew was going to happen)

- Choco Taco says, "Using your career expertise, explain how the images below aren't comparable."

- I use a quick, sloppy (but nevertheless accurate) method of trying to establish a grid at street level

- Los Santos is more difficult because the roads don't follow the grid as much as Liberty City-- therefore you need to find the few streets OR BUILDING EDGES (choco taco...) you can see that run parallel (bridges on the left side of the LS pic, assumed running east-west) and the parallel buildings (anyone who knows about city layout/building design knows that, especially in cities, most buildings are oriented directly along the N/S axis for energy reasons).

- Finding a horizon and then parallel streets/building edges to work off of, it is very plain and easy to establish a focal point for the picture. The focal points of these screens should be on the water, the horizon line. Liberty City's is way in the sky because they use camera tricks to make the city appear larger.

- The "leaning buildings" which Choco Taco keeps bringing up is something you get with any camera lens on earth (except tilt-shift, which corrects the tilt). If these screens really depicted two cities at the same scale and same distance, the leaning distortion would be the same at the same points. By drawing the lines further apart, Choco Taco is disproving his/her own point and indicating how much larger the fisheye camera makes LC look than it actually is.

I'm officially done trying to explain to Choco Taco and GKP and all of them how wrong they are. I provide a concrete, "clear" example (as much as all of them like to tell us how Los Santos is "clearly tiny") showing why this particular argument for a small city simply isn't worth their while. They just don't want to listen.

Arguing "mapheads", as I have decided to call them, Is like arguing logic to the Westboro Baptist Church. No matter what is said about this subject they think they are the enlightened one's and everyone else is just too dense to comprehend at their higher intelligence level... They believe what they want, and think they are smart for seeing the truth.

They are too far into this to backtrack now, they will argue it to their grave before admitting any wrong on their parts. Even If after the game comes out and there is factual evidence they were wrong, they will still have a counter argument.

I don't claim to know if the map is slightly smaller or bigger, the point is mute at best. Seeing how the game isn't out yet it's kind of silly to state your "belief" as fact in either direction. I know the city will be big enough for me and in the end, me liking the game is all that matters to me....

Valid points by the guys above. icon14.gif

Regardless of that, I sure hope for a SFV out there. The recent screenshot of Franklin on a Sanchez is at a place that looks too sophisticated for a village.

This pic is also the ultimate proof for me (personal) that LS will be freaking huge. Just look at the tiny cars in comparison and imagine how big everything will look and feel when walking on street level over that bridge or somewhere else on this screen!

Screenshots are admittedly perplexing.

Look at this. The Vinewood sign looks 3 feet away in this.

Then look at this. The US Bank tower looks to be at least 2 kilometers away from the Vinewood sign. The city itself seems bigger.

Yeah, that's quite interesting.. someone should do the same in IV and see if the results are the same or not. Or has it already happen?

The fact that the roads and highways now have extra lanes on them as opposed to Liberty City's one lane roads, I'm guessing the city will be pretty big. Maybe even bigger than LC! I really hope Rockstar won't compromise the city just because there's a countryside and desert. I mean it's more fun wreaking havoc in an urban sprawl than in areas with less people although I'd love to run over deers and bears with the Patriot. But still, Rockstar has only ONE chance at recreating Los Santos. After that, it's either San Fierro, Las Venturas or Vice City.

In any case, I'm confident that Rockstar has given us a city that is just the right size. Remember L.A. Noire?

pfff.. I still say it might be a big city but for me it all depends what they do with it, I still hope for big areas like Compton, Watts or Eastside La but nothing there is no sign Rockstar gave these neighbourhoods a lot of attention

Rockstar know what they're doing; The game world, city included, will be large enough to say everything that needs to be said about this place on the West coast.

Nor hollywood hills, hollywood beverly hills and santa Monica (no indication of third street promenade whatsoever). They all look so half-assed, so dense that it isn't even funny anymore. The only area that's spot on is Venice.

Looks can be deceiving. From what I see LS = 3/4 the size of LC Max.

It's quite clear that LS is going to be smaller than LC. Deal with it Rockstar Defense Force.

Again, you can't prove this. And even if LS is going to be smaller than LC, it won't be drastically smaller like some claim.

It is. All the marketing gibberish, incorrect information and aberrant details have caused a lot of confusion and heated arguments. Rockstar can very simply clear this up by giving us the map, or at least the outlines of the major areas. But they simply don't need to, so they won't. Meaning the coming months (thank god summer is in the offing) will be filled with the exact same discussions/debates that have already been bled dry countless times.

@brwhizz ; No need for personal attacks. Please refrain from such behavior. Thank You.

I actually do see the lines starting at the beginning of streets. The streets may not continue fully down the line, I think it still follows a straight path if the streets continued.

Let's look at bakerach's street lines and see if we can find the actual streets. Use the numbered lines to help line things up...

user posted image

See? He's making things up. What if the layout of the city was different and the streets went on all kind of directions? Would that change the perspective? Nope.

You would need a perfectly aligned grid of streets on both maps to make any kind of judgment. bakerach doesn't know what he's doing. That's why he had to resort to drawing imaginary streets on Los Santos.

I believe it was said that if you include just the land area, it is roughly 3.5x the area of RDR.  But if you were include everything from the ocean floor and such that is more closer to 5x RDR

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/13/the...now-about-gta-v

Rockstar says the map is 3.5 times bigger than Red Dead Redemption -- 5 times bigger if you include topography

I don't see why they wouldn't include the surface of the detailed part of the ocean. It's part of the map. I believe Rockstar confirmed that San Andreas was 13.9 square miles. That measurement includes the water.

Anyway, even if it's only land and you take the full 30% estimate from CVG, Los Santos would still be smaller than a box around Liberty City.

So, I guess this game is devoid of streets then. I guess we will be driving flying cars now.

You know though, even if it is smaller then LC, which I don't think it will be, I feel like there will be so many activities to do that it would make up for it. I personally am excited for the country almost more so then the city. I know you probably disagree with me, but why jump to conclusions. I feel like everyone who thinks the city is smaller then LC are so dead set on it. It sounds like everyone is giving up on a game that's not even released yet.

I'm just absolutely sick and tired of people calling the game half-assed. Do you realize that almost 5+ years have been put into this game. You shouldn't be showing the developers disrespect when they've probably made a game that'll possibly be one of the greatest game released in recent years.

It hasn't really been you bad mouthing the game, but others have been ridiculous about it.
