Like I have been saying, GTA IV used a lot of tricks that GTA V looks to have dropped.  For the people who actually understand what they're looking at in the screenshots/trailers, and who understand that we have maybe seen half of the city in any real detail so far, this city is going to be super badass.

Serious question: why does it matter? I can see getting pissy if the city alone was the entire map, but it's not.  Not even 1/4th of the map.

I don't think this game will be playable for up to 5 years, as countryside gets old, fast.

 

Tbh (It's spelled Raavi, go edit your post), despite our city not being apparently quite what we reasonably expected, I think this game is going to have a lot of re-playability value, much more than IV anyway. That, I am more than confident about.

Considering that the majority of GTAIV players wouldn't have had a clue that it wasn't part of LC, in fact they probably don't even know the name and just call it the '4th island', I'd say that their estimate did include Alderney, as for most people, Liberty City = GTAIV's map.

Deff - you meant the whole city is 2.3 miles across surely.

 

Check out 1500m (just under one mile in distance on the map...now imagine it squared. And you can see how much 1 sq mile covers a good proprtion of the city.

 

Very approximately +- 10% the golf course is 1 mile from downtown.

Well first off it shows me that you, and likely most of the other doubters in here, don't really understand camera perspective and how it was manipulated in GTA IV (which is kind of a crucial part of "mapping" the game from screenshots only). These lines in my picture might be a bit uneven, but they are far from random-- I did my best with the low-res image I had to work with. By looking at parallel streets (a bit harder in V since downtown L.A. varies from a grid so much) and roof lines, and then finding the focal point on the horizon, it's easier to get a sense of scale.

 

In Liberty City, Rockstar made distances seem a lot farther away than they actually were by using a fisheye-type lens in the game. That means that things directly in front of you look a lot farther away than they really are. They did that to make the city feel bigger, and also to be able to have a narrower field of view while not making it feel as tight. As we've been told already, the field of view is wider in V, lots of the pop-in issues are gone (taken from the exact same CVG video that people are using to claim the city is 1/8th of the map), and almost none of the screenshots showing the city are from a very wide field of view (Trevor climbing the Vinewood sign is pretty wide, for example).

 

The lines I drew for LC were rough and quick, but fairly accurate (you can try it in Photoshop yourself! Just follow the parallel lines!). The point is that these screens aren't comparable, as I've been saying all along.

 

 

Edit: for the doubters, aka those who don't get this picture, the lines going into the sky in IV are the problem. The focal point should go to the horizon, like it does in the screen from V. The fact that the lines from parallel streets at horizon level on the ocean converge at a point way in the sky tells you that the perspective has been manipulated.
