Map Size Thread

Aren't we sort of forgetting one thing when we compare these maps?

The roads in GTA V are far wider than they ever were in GTA IV, the most they had were 4 lanes, where as, if you got a keen eye on this you see that the roads are often 6 lanes, 3 lanes on either side grass median, or 5 lanes ( 4 and a turning lane in the middle), highways are some places as much as 8 lanes across... Surely this must account to something, pretty much making LS way bigger than LC?

GTALex was the first to use the medians as way to accuratly obtain an estimate on the city's size, I belive he came close to the same estimation as the others though.

Glenni - the size of LS has recently been extrapolated from the size of the tennis court which appears to be accurate to life size (ie 23m long). That is the only bit of info needed to compare the 2 and overlay them. LC is not WAY bigger - it IS larger though.

yes I mean LS.

Quick question magic - your scale at 1m per pixel doesnt quite work for the tennis court. The court is only 21 pixels long. A real court is 23.78 m . This is a 10% ish difference and would make quite a difference to your scale....

Haha - scratch the above - zoomed into pic a little too much...I am dense....

dont get me started  tounge.gif

Watch Dogs is a next gen game tounge.gif

On the PS3, I guarantee it's not going to be as detailed as V.

Nah, it's current gen due to still being designed largely around current generation limitations. We won't see true next gen games until the second software generation and when developers are no longer having to take the current gen consoles into consideration.

To counter my recent negative views how about this...LS is larger than Gibraltar - Monaco and Vatican city combined. Having visited all 3 I can tell you there are plenty of miles of roads to drive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar - 3sq miles

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monaco - 0.78 sq miles

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vatican_City - 0.17 sq miles

Is Chicago that much more interesting than Los Angeles to create that many blocks? The city is a good 2-3 times larger than LS in the game. Is LA really that boring IRL?

I find LA to be one of, if not thee most interesting American city with the most content for the film and video game industry in the world, and that's not because of GTA.

That is Watchdogs ENTIRE gaming environment so it was bound to be larger.

There sure are organic environments in WD. Let's see..it's good for us to have two awesome games anyway! icon14.gif

Probably not, it's just that their goal was to create a big city while Rockstar's goal was to create an adequate city and then a lot of countryside that was missing in IV.

GTA5 will be big as the city of San Francisco in my option

10-15 Mins of driving across farthest point of map

5 Mins flying the Plane to farthest point

5 Mins to climb tallest mountain

Don't think that's true. confused.gif

I think too many people thought R* would make a full scale model of Los Angeles for GTA V and realized they were wrong when they saw the screenshots, trailers, and gameplay. I was happy with R* statement before they released the screens and now I am even happier. There is a vast underwater world that is explore-able and many interiors to see. We have mountains that are probably twice to three times higher than Rotterdam Tower and a desert with ghost towns like Red Dead Redemption. Not to forget with planes, we can go higher than we could with helicopters in GTA IV. Liberty City was a dense city of skyscrapers, Los Santos is more spread out with a big business district and a major port. Rockstar will not disappoint us with their biggest game series.

I expected a bigger version, from what I saw.

And it is for an in game city... It's larger than LC + the water between the islands, care to be more specific?

The reason why Los Santos looks smaller than it should is because the main focus here is Los Angeles. In real life, the City boundaries of Los Angeles isn't that big. The surrounding areas that make LA seem large are standalone cities like Anaheim, Orange, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Long Beach, etc.

It is though. Whatever you were expecting sounds ridiculous tbh. LS is already 4.3-4.6 sq miles which is about 1.3-1.4 sq miles bigger than ALL of LC. And that's without including the water. If you include the water in between the islands, then it is STILL bigger by a bit.

@Red XIII : You haven't been following this thread have you? It is big.

Los Santos is pretty big. Have you looked at some of the mapping post where the scale of things are highlighted? When you're at ground level Los Santos is going to be ENORMOUS. Of course it's going to look small in aerial shots.

I have no doubt in my mind that Los Santos is going to be massive and when the game is released people will be flooding these forums with comments about how big the map is.

I don't know, I just don't want a disappointment. I mean based on what I've read earlier, you guys have made it seem small.
