Map Size Thread

i've got a comparison made for V and IV city. and it tells me that city wise, Liberty is a little larger then Santos. but on whole, the V map is much larger.

i'll upload it soon. in an hour or so. biggrin.gif

I'm taking that into account, I don't just pretend that what I don't see isn't there. The upper runway does extend a bit more as it continues past the other runway, but the lower one would be same length as the LC runways. Using that measurement, it would stop right at the edge of the peninsula at the end of the released map, which makes perfect sense.

We don't know how far the southeast part of airport extends. The LC runway length is in orange in the bottom picture.

So that runway is just about the same size as the one from GTAIV...awesome.

Looking forward to trying to land a plane on that thing.

The GTAV runways are a little longer. There are two runways that intersect and continue on a bit and that's cut off.

The red area includes a more realistic "used" area of water, considering boat/chopper trips/races/chases around the islands as well as rivers.

Sorry, but you made an error of scale. smile.gif

Example: this is one of the widest road of GTA V.

This road of GTA IV is smaller, but ony a little bit.

The maps you refer to have a different zoom level and the GTA IV roads look too smaller.

Nice work magic Al, but its REALLY REALLY hard to believe that LS is that big. doesnt look that big at all. But your technique is as accurate as we can hope for really

Just for laughs, I remembered this comment so I decided to make your scale a bit more visible as well:

This is scaled after your latest gif image. It's not very different from Al's...Actually it's almost identical!

This is my interpretation of the scaling. Using the runway as a guide and general road sizes. Liberty is larger city wise. theres no doubt about it.

but the map for V is much much larger. definitely more playable area.

At GTAaLex: You original runway scale was pretty accurate off the bat. Way closer than mine. but I still have a hard time believing that LS is THAT big. I mean the facts seem to line up, but if the game came out and LS was 5-10% smaller I wouldnt be surprised at all

You realize that the map of LS is a fan made map and the road widths are not the same as the blueprint or likely the actual game?

That's only if Runways are scaled the same... Which probably isn't the case.

Seems off to me. The runway length should never be a real comparison reference because runways always differ in length (case in point San Andreas where all 3 of the runways were of different sizes). Also, why should we assume that V (having actual aircraft) would have runways as long as the ones in IV?

Also, what road widths did you use? Here's an example of a road that should of the same size (almost):

4 lanes + median + shoulders (in V) is almost the same size as 4 lanes + median (IV)

It's still funny that both you and Al used two different methods to compare the maps and reached pretty much the same verdict

Coincidence? I think it's very unlikely. What's funny is that this scale would also work very well with the highway widths, so that's 3 methods with the same result.

Even if the final map was 10% smaller, it would still have more landmass than LC, so I'm still very pleased.

Kb's map has me salivating.

A little under two months to go...

His scale is actually off. Look at Alex's, Pony's and other people's comparisons, it's bigger than LC in every way and the same size including water.

Yes, I know. It's not too far off, but it's still noticeable smile.gif

Runaways differ in each game, I don't exactly blame him for using that method.

actually it is. the scales we have seen here in the last week indicate that los santos is bigger than gta iv with water included. his scaled indicates just the landmass alone in gta iv is bigger than los santos. thats quite a big difference and using the runways for comparisons (as has already been stated) is a bit foolish to say the least. not only do the real life airports the in game airports are modeled after differ in length but every runway in the gta series differs in length. it would be the equivalent of trying to scale the maps on vehicle length using a dumptruck from gta iv and a sub compact from gta v.

Depends how much water you're including in 'LC+water' but Magic Al's second comparison of LC + water which only used water that you're realistically going to use is the best one in my opinion

id have to agree. if a guy was gonna use the first comparison then you would have to include quite a bit of the water surrounding los santos. to be 100% fair about it the only water that should be included is the water between the islands and not the water along the outside edges of the border islands.

Irony alert here lol - Als scale is totally correct and the larger LS is correct. There IS no argument. The runways are not the way to scale things.

Look carefully at the tennis court - the fact that the accepted 10m wide roads tally with a real life tennis court measurement ie 23m long. Extrapolate this information and Als scale is the one to go by. Note how the aerial photo of the very tip of the runways in LS actually shows a narrower runway than the blueprint would suggest. (Als large 9000 pixel map) This shows the blueprint really is only useful to show road placements. Not proportion.

Totally agree. I'd like to see a size comparison using the rivers of LC only and no ocean. For me, the rivers are part of the city, but ocean is just ocean. I think LS may just be a bit bigger than LC with it's rivers. If this is the case, then I am satisfied that LS is bigger on all counts.

At first I thought the blueprint was just the standard in game map(what you see in the mini map and start menu) with a filter over it, but now I think it may have been made from scartch by of one Rockstar's graphic artists, which would explain why the scale of the roads is weird.

easy on gkp. hes being much more logical than a lot of the posters here at gtaforums. he agrees because its obvious that ai's and lex's and deffponys scales rely on solid math. hes not an idiot. hes not a child. hes being grown up about all of this and so should everyone else.

This thread will last until GTA V is released.

I'm sure newer members will create an account and complain about the map size, adding another 50+ pages of crap.
