Ok so I did a quick rescale based on the gameplay trailer and this is what I got.

Using this scaled model of a car in GTA IV

http://i.imgur.com/PrWsYqr.png?1

Comparing it to this shot

http://i.imgur.com/7y6Q1D5.jpg

And using these screens as a correlation to the blueprint

http://i.imgur.com/TymEPgi.jpg

I obtained this scale

There is about a 5% room for error since the perspectives change as the camera raises, hence why the bluprint and screens arent aligned perfectly, and I think LS might be slightly smaller than this. Im preparing to run further comparisons once I get GTA IV installed on my PC.

If anyone wants a HUGE version of the blueprint with michaels neighborhood overlaid its here.

Great work! I honestly feel this is in the ballpark. It also matches up with the scale somebody got on the previous page using the tennis courts which are exactly the same size as they are in Liberty City. I feel too many people come to the judgement that Los Santos is smaller due to the fact it has fewer city blocks and roads, but fail to realize that Los Santos' city blocks are actually larger than IV's.

Besides LS clearly being bigger than LC if this scale is correct, another thing to take note of would be that "LA sprawl" people were talking about a while back. If you mentally zoom into that small section of the map or just take a look at the gameplay video where it zooms into Michael's part of the trailer, Los Santos will absolutely feel like a sprawling city. The blocks are big and the with the lack of sky scrapers compared to LC, you'll be able to see farther across.

Deffpony, great work as always. The more we discover about this map and how huge it is, the more my hype grows

If somebody in here want to compare this to IV's map that would be great, since I'm not that familiar with IV's surface area. Unfortunately I don't have a nice flashy .gif comparison for you guys.

I think your scaling with the tennis court is correct and it would make Los Santos 94% the size I end up with last night, or 125% the incorrect size I've been stuck on the last week or so based on my obsession with the (false) idea that Rockstar likes 1m resolution. (Not 133% of that, which is another error I made last night from not measuring the tennis court well enough.)

From that comparison is it possible to determine the size of LS in sq miles?

Eternal Turnip

Deffpony, that is amazing. According to your map Los Santos is a little bigger than THE ENTIRE of Liberty City's landmass plus there is a vast countryside with small towns to explore.

I can't wait!!!

Roughly about 3.6 - 4 sq miles, which is amazing!

Any idea on the city's square mileage? If GTA IV is around 6, I think it's not too far out there to say 7. Maybe 8 including the hills where the Vinewood sign is.

NO. GTA IV is 6.25 sq.miles including the water inbetween the islands.

GTAV's LS looks to be about 3.6-4 square miles.

How about the sheer fact that a 4 lane highway with a median the size of a lane in V looks way smaller than a 2 lane highway in IV?

I think this is the best formulation of the main argument why all the estimations that make LS look smaller than LC are fundamentally flawed. It's the thread winning argument IMO. It's great that there is an all round consensus even with Choco, Deffpony and Magic_Al that LS is bigger than LC now. My compliments for that.

Deffpony, please do download the PC version. And download this, you will see the city from a POV like never before.

aaaaaaaaah ok. Four sounds small, but if it's larger than LC, I have no complaints

LC without water is 3.25 sq miles, LS is 4 sq miles which is close to a mile bigger. That is pretty big for the city alone.

Add the fact that there are multiple curvy roads on the hills.

Only issue I have with Deffpony's scale is how massive the cul de sacs look...

I think you just answered your own question: I would imagine that Rockford Hills represents Beverly Hills, Bel Air and the other Platinum Triangle neighbourhoods. Satisfied?

It just doesnt look right. i mean. i get what people are saying about V having larger blocks then IV but the IV map in the above comparison looks smaller then in should. not proportionate. maybe a little larger.

That's because he isn't including the damn water! devil.gifbiggrin.gif

LS is bigger than LC without water, and pretty much the same with water. Win/Win situation here.

Zoomed in? More like the opposite. Some of the streets are even there on the blue-print, and compare the gameplay trailer view of the city to the blue-print, most of the blocks look tiny on the blueprint but big in the trailer.

Like I always say, look at the street widths.

Agreed. The gameplay trailer pretty much confirms that majority of the streets in Los Santos are two lanes per direction, compared to the narrow streets in GTA IV. The thing about Los Angeles is that it doesn't feel as cramped as New York City... Rockstar had to keep that essence. It needs space and that's what they gave us, wide roads and pavements, buildings are spread a tiny bit farther from one another and the like.

Also blocks in Los Angeles do tend to be a bit larger than the ones in New York, if I'm not mistaken.

Just wanted to say that I wouldnt assume my scale is THAT accurate just yet. I have to do a couple more tests to ensure that the car model scale is correct, because I dont trust it. Last time I trusted scale sizes I ended up completely wrong
