If the figures really shows that downtown LS is smaller than IV's LC, then I don't think that rest of the map would be big. Cockstar saying LS is their biggest map is just marketing bullsh*t to con us to buy their crappy game. I bet it might be slightly bigger than SA but even that I doubt. Don't waste your money on this bullsh*t, guys.

I'm pretty certain Los Santos will be at least 1.5 the size of liberty city, seeing as the city is so big they couldn't make Las Venturas or anything

What no SAN FIERRO OR LAS VENTURAS are you sure, I know the game is mostly based around Los Santos but I find that impossible to believe I've been following V since it's first announcement and I haven't heard that confused.gif

Dude, we have known that Los Santos was going to be the only city for like goddamn forever.

He was being sarcastic.

I honestly think that when we are playing the game the city is going to feel a lot bigger than them screens. IMO I feel its an illusion that's making the city look that small, but if the city does turn out to be smaller than I expect then I hope the atmosphere makes up for it.

You realize LA actually has a pretty small amount of downtown skyscrapers and is more about vast neighborhoods stretching everywhere, including the hills? Btw, Cockstar? Are you some kind of troll or what?

Is there still a chance of a smaller city to the North or East? There are at least 2 or 3 highways heading in that general direction as well as a train bridge so hopefully something is up there. That could (partly) explain the suggested size of LS.

I personally think a huge city may have turned out how it did in LA Noire. The size was great but it was universally hated for the lack of interactivity, repetitiveness, and long times to travel. I can enjoy a large city myself, but with such a large audience to please and so many other aspects to focus on, the current size we have is fine by my standards.

Doubtful. But there will be a pack of towns.

I wish I knew how to post a pic. But if you do a Bing images search with "gta v vinewood" as the search topic, you'll see a screenshot from Gameinformer showing a helicopter with the Vinewood sign in the background. You can also see some suburbs over the back of the hill. Maybe a freeway in the top right too. The suburbs here don't seem to be condensed, but look rather rural. What do you guys think? It does add a little more city, even if it's not condensed.

Edit. There also seems to lights off in the distance, indicating this area goes on for a considerable distance. Can someone a bit more tech savvy bring this image in. Thanks.

Guys do you think LS in GTA SA was a good size? To me it never got repetitive. and it't is only 1 third of LC in GTA 4! so i think rockstar will do LS right in GTA 5 because the size of LS is about the size of LC and they made LS look big in GTA SA and and they made RDR look massive as well and RDR is about the same size as LC in GTA 4 so that is amazing, i TRUST Rockstar games and i really think GTA 5 will be really great with a awesome massive map!! biggrin.gif

I just noticed something from the GameInformer video where they discuss the GTA V demo they saw (link here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LwzlQ7vZLQ).

I'm sure this has been brought up by someone, and I know these Game Informer guys just saw a brief portion of the game and didn't really get to control much, but when they talk about switching characters (in a wheel!) and the distances they approximate when the map zooms out, they talk in terms of 50 AND 80 MILES. I know they could be majorly overestimating, but from listening to how impressed they were and the scale of the map, I think there could be more that they're hiding than we suspect.

How big can Los Santos be before it becomes dull? As was previously mentioned, L.A. Noire felt dull and lifeless, and in all fairness, the focus of THAT game was completely different than GTAV'S open world environment.

Diversity is the key to the overall environment. If Los Santos was the entire map, then we would be looking at another GTAIV, which is becoming more and more UNDERRATED as bloated expectations continue to grow. Liberty City had it's faults, which were mainly a lack of interior spaces to explore, but wasn't as small as most people claim. It FELT a little underwhelming due to the lack of diversity in the landscape.

This game seems much closer in layout to San Andreas, which was by FAR the most interesting map I have ever played on any game. SA felt HUGE because of how different each area in the map felt. Individually, each city and town was rather small, but all came together to form a beautiful map that never got boring to explore.

GTAV is looking like a modern day version of San Andreas. That is the right direction, and nobody will feel like the city of Los Santos is small when it will be surrounded by numerous towns and a countryside environment. Los Santos will ALSO have more interior spaces to explore than Liberty City did, which will make ALL the difference. Vice City was a great game, but that map's saving grace were it's interiors. Without places like the mall, golf course, airport and movie studio, that map would have seemed PUNY.

Are you talking about this screen?

Maybe I just have really sh*t eyesight, but I don't really see any suburbs tbh. Just the prison looking thing.

One of them said switching from one character to another was the equivalent of traveling 50 miles.

Now some people one here believe Los Santos is about 2miles or square miles in size. That mean

there's at least 48 miles of nothingness in the map rolleyes.gif

Alien ...he was just picking a number of the top of his head.

The city is just 3 sq miles max. OK. The land area is in total ( including the city) approx 20 /21 sq miles...R* THEMSELVES said the land area was 3.5 RDRs.

Los Santos is big as the GTA IV map. Maybe a little bigger, but not much bigger. Both IGN and GI stated that so I'm taking their word to heart.

The whole point of this thread is to show how that might be inaccurate. From the measurements and estimations we have all made the city seems slightly smaller than iv's map

Los Santos in San Andreas, was of a good size, but most of us know deep down that it really should have been a bit bigger than it was. SA didn't do LS (LA) enough justice. LS had been the only city in SA, then I definitely would have said it could have been of a better size. However, nobody really cares too much about that, because the whole map was HUGE and we had 2 other major cities with San Fierro and Las Venturas. So in that situation, it was fine to overlook LS's modest size.

This situation is different. The only major city we have in GTA V is Los Santos. So therefore, it would expected that Rockstar would do direct all of their best efforts and resources into making a huge, very detailed LS. Detailed it looks indeed, but huge ? From these images, not so sure about that.

@ Scottish

My point exactly - I cannot really see any continuous suburban areas in the images so far, and that bothers me. All I can see is not so large downtown area and clusters of house and buildings surrounding it. I just hope Rockstar irons out any potential letdowns on this map, I really do.

I agree with you guys. If there is a good sized suburban area I will be more than happy with what we have seen. The problem is... where is it. I have looked through all the screens and both trailers, and searched through the mapping thread and I just dont see it.

That's because there was very little to do in L.A. Noire other than drive around collecting film reels and vehicles.

Exactly....its as if a 8 sq mile LA is WAAAY to big for people.. ?????

a under 3 by 3 miles city is STILL far too small.

There could still be a San Fernando valley behind the North West mountains and a possible San Gabriel/San Bernardino valley behind the eastern mountains.

no complaints if they had a attempt at a suburban area of a good size...

Hope they show something more promising in any new screenshots they release.

Sure Deff 8 sq miles would be fine by GTA standards....were not getting that though.

Im saying that 3 miles is fine. Is it small? No. Do I wish it were bigger? Yea. But if the entire map is as big as they say it is I have a feeling I will be kept busy.

Not to mention, I never even played in Alderny city when I played IV. All I wanted was the first two islands with country side, and I think we are getting that

I hope the 3rd trailer shows some evidence of a good number of enterable environments in the city.

Can we assume from the 2nd trailer that some office floors will be accessible ?...I would love this (not the low floor Lawyers in GTAIV) but a office setting with a view.
